The Royal Route and the Historic
Sites of the Main City in Gdańsk
Ranking among the largest and most
beautiful architectural complexes of
historic value in Poland and Northern
Europe, it is a must for every tourist.
The route running the course of Long
Street and Long Market, from the Golden
Gate to the Green Gate, evokes
awe and wonder with its facades of rich
burger townhouses and buildings of
stature, including the most impressive
and most valuable Artus Court and the
Town Hall of the Main City. All around
the route stretch blocks and quarters of
the historical architecture interspersed
with authentic gems instantly associated
with Gdańsk – St Mary’s Church, the
world’s largest brick shrine of the Gothic
epoch, and the Crane – a Mediaeval
port hoisting structure.
Kościuszko Square in Gdynia
The Square is where Gdynia merges with
the sea revealing the marine heritage of
the place. It is also one of the favourite
sites to take a leisurely stroll, appreciated
by the visitors and locals alike, and
a popular open air stage for concerts,
picnics, and other mass events. Here
too, is the permanent mooring site of
the historic vessels: the ORP Błyskawica
[Lightning Navy Vessel] and the Dar Pomorza
tall ship [Gift of Pomerania]. Cruisers,
visiting naval fleets, and tall ships
berth here. The incoming water tram
shuttles and white fleet vessels will stop
here. Out of many sites of interest in the
neighbourhood one should mention
the Gdynia Aquarium, popular especially
among children and teenagers,
a modern sailing boat marina, and many
gourmet’s nooks.

The Sopot Pier
This longest European wooden pier
(511.5 m) spanning the Sopot beach is
the place to take a recreational and therapeutic
walk (the iodine concentration
at the outermost seaward tip is twice
the level recorded on shore). The pier
is the stage of numerous festivals and
a landing place for the white fleet vessels
and water taxis. The pier offers an
excellent vantage point to watch the
World Sailing Championships, the Baltic
Cup in Windsurfing, or the Sopot Triathlon
on the bay waters.
The Sopot pier is composed of two sections:
the famous wooden promenade,
and the Spa Square on land, where
concerts and festivities are held. Surrounding
the place is the unique Fin de
Siecle spa architecture.
St Mary’s Assumption Gothic
Nunnery Church in Żukowo
The origins of the shrine go back to mid
14. century. The first unquestionable
mention of the already existing nunnery
church is dated 1462. The church served
the nuns and the Żukowo population
for ages. The most precious element
of its fixtures is the 16. century altar
from Antwerp, now flanking the main
altar on the right. The latter, depicting
St Mary’s Assumption, is dated to the
17. century. Equally interesting are: the
Baroque pulpit, choir balustrade, numerous
paintings and ornamentation.
Adjacent to the church is the Parish
Museum with a collection of canonicals
and liturgical accessories originating
from the Żukowo nunnery on display.
A separate exhibition is devoted to the
Kashubians and the Kashubian embroidery
of the Żukowo school.
