The Royal Route <strong>and</strong> the Historic<br />

Sites of the Ma<strong>in</strong> City <strong>in</strong> Gdańsk<br />

Rank<strong>in</strong>g among the largest <strong>and</strong> most<br />

beautiful architectural complexes of<br />

historic value <strong>in</strong> Pol<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Northern<br />

Europe, it is a must for every tourist.<br />

The route runn<strong>in</strong>g the course of Long<br />

Street <strong>and</strong> Long Market, from the Golden<br />

Gate to the Green Gate, evokes<br />

awe <strong>and</strong> wonder with its facades of rich<br />

burger townhouses <strong>and</strong> build<strong>in</strong>gs of<br />

stature, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the most impressive<br />

<strong>and</strong> most valuable Artus Court <strong>and</strong> the<br />

Town Hall of the Ma<strong>in</strong> City. All around<br />

the route stretch blocks <strong>and</strong> quarters of<br />

the historical architecture <strong>in</strong>terspersed<br />

with authentic gems <strong>in</strong>stantly associated<br />

with Gdańsk – St Mary’s Church, the<br />

world’s largest brick shr<strong>in</strong>e of the Gothic<br />

epoch, <strong>and</strong> the Crane – a Mediaeval<br />

port hoist<strong>in</strong>g structure.<br />

Kościuszko Square <strong>in</strong> Gdynia<br />

The Square is where Gdynia merges with<br />

the sea reveal<strong>in</strong>g the mar<strong>in</strong>e heritage of<br />

the place. It is also one of the favourite<br />

sites to take a leisurely stroll, appreciated<br />

by the visitors <strong>and</strong> locals alike, <strong>and</strong><br />

a popular open air stage for concerts,<br />

picnics, <strong>and</strong> other mass events. Here<br />

too, is the permanent moor<strong>in</strong>g site of<br />

the historic vessels: the ORP Błyskawica<br />

[Lightn<strong>in</strong>g Navy Vessel] <strong>and</strong> the Dar Pomorza<br />

tall ship [Gift of Pomerania]. Cruisers,<br />

visit<strong>in</strong>g naval fleets, <strong>and</strong> tall ships<br />

berth here. The <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g water tram<br />

shuttles <strong>and</strong> white fleet vessels will stop<br />

here. Out of many sites of <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> the<br />

neighbourhood one should mention<br />

the Gdynia Aquarium, popular especially<br />

among children <strong>and</strong> teenagers,<br />

a modern sail<strong>in</strong>g boat mar<strong>in</strong>a, <strong>and</strong> many<br />

gourmet’s nooks.<br />

The Sopot Pier<br />

This longest European wooden pier<br />

(511.5 m) spann<strong>in</strong>g the Sopot beach is<br />

the place to take a recreational <strong>and</strong> therapeutic<br />

walk (the iod<strong>in</strong>e concentration<br />

at the outermost seaward tip is twice<br />

the level recorded on shore). The pier<br />

is the stage of numerous festivals <strong>and</strong><br />

a l<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g place for the white fleet vessels<br />

<strong>and</strong> water taxis. The pier offers an<br />

excellent vantage po<strong>in</strong>t to watch the<br />

World Sail<strong>in</strong>g Championships, the Baltic<br />

Cup <strong>in</strong> W<strong>in</strong>dsurf<strong>in</strong>g, or the Sopot Triathlon<br />

on the bay waters.<br />

The Sopot pier is composed of two sections:<br />

the famous wooden promenade,<br />

<strong>and</strong> the Spa Square on l<strong>and</strong>, where<br />

concerts <strong>and</strong> festivities are held. Surround<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the place is the unique F<strong>in</strong> de<br />

Siecle spa architecture.<br />

St Mary’s Assumption Gothic<br />

Nunnery Church <strong>in</strong> Żukowo<br />

The orig<strong>in</strong>s of the shr<strong>in</strong>e go back to mid<br />

14. century. The first unquestionable<br />

mention of the already exist<strong>in</strong>g nunnery<br />

church is dated 1462. The church served<br />

the nuns <strong>and</strong> the Żukowo population<br />

for ages. The most precious element<br />

of its fixtures is the 16. century altar<br />

from Antwerp, now flank<strong>in</strong>g the ma<strong>in</strong><br />

altar on the right. The latter, depict<strong>in</strong>g<br />

St Mary’s Assumption, is dated to the<br />

17. century. Equally <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g are: the<br />

Baroque pulpit, choir balustrade, numerous<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> ornamentation.<br />

Adjacent to the church is the Parish<br />

Museum with a collection of canonicals<br />

<strong>and</strong> liturgical accessories orig<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from the Żukowo nunnery on display.<br />

A separate exhibition is devoted to the<br />

Kashubians <strong>and</strong> the Kashubian embroidery<br />

of the Żukowo school.<br />
