EURO 2012<br />
In the year 2012 the Gdańsk Metropolitan Area will host football teams participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />
European Football Championship, EURO 2012. The matches will be held at the modern football<br />
stadium capable of tak<strong>in</strong>g the audience of 44 thous<strong>and</strong>, currently <strong>in</strong> construction <strong>in</strong> the<br />
Letnica district of Gdańsk. While the responsibility for the erection of the stadium rests with<br />
the Gdańsk city authorities, organisation of a sports event of that scale requires engagement<br />
on the part of all local governments of the Metropolitan Area, especially as concerns transport,<br />
accommodation, cater<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> public security. These needs call for <strong>in</strong>tensive development<br />
of the exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>frastructure which, once the EURO 2012 games are over, will serve the residents<br />
<strong>and</strong> the visitors to the metropolis.<br />
The most vital projects required to accompany the erection of the football stadium <strong>in</strong> connection<br />
with host<strong>in</strong>g the EURO 2012, <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />
• enlargement of the Lech Wałęsa airport,<br />
• redevelopment of the road lead<strong>in</strong>g from the airport to the stadium (Słowackiego Street),<br />
• build<strong>in</strong>g of the metropolitan railway l<strong>in</strong>e to l<strong>in</strong>k the airport with Gdańsk <strong>and</strong> Gdynia,<br />
• construction of the southern r<strong>in</strong>g road, <strong>and</strong> the Sucharski Route together with the tunnel<br />
under the Dead Vistula canal,<br />
• erection of a congress <strong>and</strong> exhibition centre <strong>in</strong> the neighbourhood of the new football<br />
stadium,<br />
• build<strong>in</strong>g of new accommodation facilities,<br />
• modernisation <strong>and</strong> expansion of the medical base.<br />
Most of the <strong><strong>in</strong>vest</strong>ment projects accompany<strong>in</strong>g the stadium erection <strong>and</strong> organisation of the<br />
EURO 2012 are already under way or well advanced <strong>in</strong> their preparation for implementation.<br />
