HEALTH AND BEAUTY The health service system of both public and non-public status is well developed in the Bay of Gdańsk Metropolitan Area. Medical services in the metropolis can be obtained from over 250 various health care entities and almost 500 apothecaries. The health care system is based on a network of privately-owned health care centres providing basic medical services. These are complemented with a network of centres offering advanced medicine (hospitals), owned mostly by the local governments. The major institutions providing medical services in the Metropolitan Area include: • St Adalbert Specialist Hospital in Gdańsk-Zaspa, • Pomeranian Centre of Infectious Diseases and Tuberculosis in Gdańsk, • Specialist Mother and Child Healthcare Complex in Gdańsk, • Prof. T. Bilikiewicz Voivodship Psychiatric Hospital in Gdańsk, • Pomeranian Centre of Traumatology at the N. Copernicus Voivodship Specialist Hospital in Gdańsk, • J. Titz-Kosko Voivodship Rheumatologic Complex in Sopot, • Polish Red Cross Maritime Hospital in Gdynia, • J. Brudziński Municipal Hospital in Gdynia, • F. Ceynowa Specialist Hospital in Wejherowo, • Voivodship Oncology Centre in Gdańsk. Alongside the above, the Metropolitan Area is home to highly specialised health care institutions, to name e.g. the Academic Clinical Centre in Gdańsk or the Marine and Tropical Medicine Institute. The hospital network in the metropolis further includes the Rheumatologic Hospital. Gdańsk was the first city in Poland to have a private hospital, owned by the listed SWISSMED company, built. - 46 - Table 18. The population-to-hospital bed ratio in the Gdańsk Metropolitan Area. SPA services are available from many specialist medical centres, however the best known are the SPA facilities of the Nadmorski hotel (Gdynia), Haffner hotel (Sopot), and Sheraton hotel (Sopot). Tourist Heaven EURO 2012 In the year 2012 the Gdańsk Metropolitan Area will host football teams participating in the European Football Championship, EURO 2012. The matches will be held at the modern football stadium capable of taking the audience of 44 thousand, currently in construction in the Letnica district of Gdańsk. While the responsibility for the erection of the stadium rests with the Gdańsk city authorities, organisation of a sports event of that scale requires engagement on the part of all local governments of the Metropolitan Area, especially as concerns transport, accommodation, catering, and public security. These needs call for intensive development of the existing infrastructure which, once the EURO 2012 games are over, will serve the residents and the visitors to the metropolis. The most vital projects required to accompany the erection of the football stadium in connection with hosting the EURO 2012, include: • enlargement of the Lech Wałęsa airport, • redevelopment of the road leading from the airport to the stadium (Słowackiego Street), • building of the metropolitan railway line to link the airport with Gdańsk and Gdynia, • construction of the southern ring road, and the Sucharski Route together with the tunnel under the Dead Vistula canal, • erection of a congress and exhibition centre in the neighbourhood of the new football stadium, • building of new accommodation facilities, • modernisation and expansion of the medical base. Most of the investment projects accompanying the stadium erection and organisation of the EURO 2012 are already under way or well advanced in their preparation for implementation. - 47 - A view of the grandstand of the Letnica football stadium.
