GROWING HOTEL BASE<br />
The position of the metropolitan area as an important centre of tourism <strong>and</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
is reflected <strong>in</strong> the development of the hotel base. In 2007, the visitors could choose from<br />
72 facilities represent<strong>in</strong>g a range of st<strong>and</strong>ards. Hotels had over 4.4 thous<strong>and</strong> rooms <strong>and</strong><br />
more than 8.8 thous<strong>and</strong> beds to offer. Most hotel facilities available were of the three<br />
<strong>and</strong> two-star st<strong>and</strong>ards.<br />

The metropolis is ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g new hotels year by year. On the photo, the Sheraton Hotel <strong>in</strong> Sopot, opened <strong>in</strong> 2008.<br />
The steadily grow<strong>in</strong>g number of hotel guests <strong>and</strong> the pend<strong>in</strong>g UEFA EURO 2012 Football<br />
Championships enhance <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g new, higher class hotels with conference<br />
<strong>and</strong> spa facilities, as well as tourist-class accommodation among the domestic <strong>and</strong> foreign<br />
<strong><strong>in</strong>vest</strong>ors.<br />
The year 2008 marked the open<strong>in</strong>g of e.g. the Sheraton Hotel <strong>in</strong> Sopot (5*), <strong>and</strong> the<br />
Hotel Gdańsk <strong>in</strong> Gdańsk (4*). Further three hotels are <strong>in</strong> construction <strong>in</strong> the same city:<br />
the Radisson SAS, Hilton, <strong>and</strong> Qubus. The projects of the IBB cha<strong>in</strong> hotels, <strong>and</strong> the Ibis<br />
<strong>and</strong> Etap tourist-class facilities are <strong>in</strong> their <strong>in</strong>itial stages of construction. Several other<br />
hotel sites are at the <strong><strong>in</strong>vest</strong>ment plann<strong>in</strong>g stage. New <strong><strong>in</strong>vest</strong>ment opportunities arise on<br />
attractively located estates offered by the local governments, <strong>and</strong> on sites of multi-functional<br />
large-scale centres planned by the developers. Among the latter, let us mention<br />
but e.g. the project envisag<strong>in</strong>g the development of the ex-shipyard estate <strong>in</strong> Gdańsk, or<br />
the expanse separat<strong>in</strong>g the port of Gdynia from the city, or the neighbourhood of the<br />
railway station <strong>in</strong> Sopot. The overall number of beds <strong>in</strong> the hotels of the Metropolitan<br />
Area is anticipated to exceed 20 thous<strong>and</strong> by the year 2012.<br />
