WELCOME TO THE METROPOLIS Tourism ranks among the most important and best developing industries in the Metropolitan Area and Pomeranian region. Visitors are encouraged by the unmatched values of the natural environment and the multi-cultural heritage of the region – legacy of the local population and newcomers who settled and stayed here for generations. The tourist values translate to dynamic development of the tourist infrastructure. The Gdańsk Metropolitan Area takes pride in its exceptional offer available to both the visitors and residents. The number of tourists visiting the metropolis, especially in the summer, is the ultimate outcome of interplay between more than just the weather conditions, or natural and historic values. It is also the function of such factors as: availability of accommodation, the interesting recreational and cultural offer, accessibility of medical and spa services of the European standard, and the shopping offer. The Swedish and residents of the Kaliningrad Circuit, for example, find the Gdańsk metropolis an attractive and popular place to do the shopping. On the other hand, many Norwegians, Germans, and British enjoy the tourist offer and the varied entertainment, and complement their stay reaching for medical services, e.g. ophthalmological and dentistry clinics, or specialists in plastic surgery. Tourist flow in the Metropolis is also generated by ports. Every year over 100 cruisers call at the ports of Gdańsk and Gdynia with about 100 thousands tourists on board. Many foreign tourists are the passengers of ferries operating between metropolis and Swedish ports, come for one day shopping or they are in transit. - 42 - Considering the average daily spending of foreign tourists while in Poland, which the Institute of Tourism in Warsaw estimates to oscillate around USD 92, one can deduce that the income the metropolis earned on the visitors staying overnight stands at about USD 56.4 million. The ‘one-day’ visitors left another sum, at least comparable to the figure. Table 15. The accommodation base in the Metropolitan Area, 2007. Tourist Heaven GROWING HOTEL BASE The position of the metropolitan area as an important centre of tourism and business is reflected in the development of the hotel base. In 2007, the visitors could choose from 72 facilities representing a range of standards. Hotels had over 4.4 thousand rooms and more than 8.8 thousand beds to offer. Most hotel facilities available were of the three and two-star standards. Table 16. The hotel base in the Metropolitan Area, 2007. Drawing by: Jan Wójcikiewicz Hotels / Stefan Kuryłowicz - 43 - The metropolis is gaining new hotels year by year. On the photo, the Sheraton Hotel in Sopot, opened in 2008. The steadily growing number of hotel guests and the pending UEFA EURO 2012 Football Championships enhance interest in building new, higher class hotels with conference and spa facilities, as well as tourist-class accommodation among the domestic and foreign investors. The year 2008 marked the opening of e.g. the Sheraton Hotel in Sopot (5*), and the Hotel Gdańsk in Gdańsk (4*). Further three hotels are in construction in the same city: the Radisson SAS, Hilton, and Qubus. The projects of the IBB chain hotels, and the Ibis and Etap tourist-class facilities are in their initial stages of construction. Several other hotel sites are at the investment planning stage. New investment opportunities arise on attractively located estates offered by the local governments, and on sites of multi-functional large-scale centres planned by the developers. Among the latter, let us mention but e.g. the project envisaging the development of the ex-shipyard estate in Gdańsk, or the expanse separating the port of Gdynia from the city, or the neighbourhood of the railway station in Sopot. The overall number of beds in the hotels of the Metropolitan Area is anticipated to exceed 20 thousand by the year 2012. Photo: archives of the Sopot City Hall
