HOTBED OF STAFF AND RESEARCH
The Metropolis is home to many public and non-public schools of higher education which,
together with academic and research institutes, form the hotbed for staff resources tapped
by the entire northern Poland.
In terms of the number of graduates, public schools of higher education, especially the
University of Gdańsk, Gdańsk University of Technology, Medical University, and Maritime
University, contribute most to educating future staff in an array of special fields. The recent
15 years have witnessed swift development of privately-owned schools of tertiary education.
Focusing mainly on the humanities, they offer studies in areas high in demand in the
market, related to law, administration, management, finance, and accounting.
The range of profiles of the offered courses, and the enrolment places available to the candidates
are growing year by year. In the academic year of 2005/2006 16.5 thousand graduates
left higher schools. In the subsequent academic year their number rose to 17.4 thousand.
The enrolments for the year 2007/2008 beat the record with more than 90.6 thousand freshmen.
Seeing to their education is the academic staff of 5.2 thousand teachers.
The evolving structure of the educational opportunities will have its impact on the future of
the Metropolitan Area, particularly on its economy. Year after year we are getting more students
who opt for the specialisations sought for in the market, that is engineering and technical
studies, architectural and construction profiles, fields related to information technology
and environment protection. Economics and administration continue to be in high interest.
The growing number of students and the ever new needs with which the economy challenges
the schools require steady development of the academic and research base. Hence the
efforts of both public and non-public schools to expand their educational ‘hardware’. The
effects can be evidenced most clearly on the example of three top universities of the Gdańsk
Metropolitan Area. The Gdańsk University of Technology has acquired modern facilities now
housing the Management and ETI departments. The University of Gdańsk is steadily continuing
its massive project of expanding the university campus. In pursuance of a long-term
investment programme the school has erected a new facility complex for the Faculty of Management
in Sopot, the Main Library, the Faculty of Law and Administration, the facilities
housing the Faculty of Social Sciences (Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology, Journalism, Pedagogy,
and Political Sciences), and the Institute of Geography in Gdańsk.

The existing facilities have been given a thorough revamp and modernisation.
The educational infrastructure of the metropolis has further been enhanced with another
major addition – the new Academic Centre of Invasive Medicine, that is a clinical hospital
which will not only treat patients, but also educate new specialists studying at the Medical
University of Gdańsk. The Academy of Music in Gdańsk, and the Academy of Physical Education
and Sport have also enlarged their bases.
