PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN THE METROPOLITAN AREA The economic potential of a metropolis is, among other factors, a function of well organised public transport which enables the residents to move smoothly from and to school, work, and places of leisure. The main organiser of the public transport in the Gdańsk Metropolis is the Metropolitan Transport Association of the Bay of Gdańsk formed in 2007 (www.mzkzg.org). The purpose of the Association is to integrate the existing bus, tram, trolley, and swift commuter train (overground equivalent of the subway) systems. Integration is intended to embrace all sub-systems of the public transport operated by the municipal, state, and private carriers. For three years now the association has also been promoting water transport in the summer season, i.e. the water tram shuttle between the harbours of Gdańsk, Gdynia, Sopot, and Hel. The local governments of the areas comprising the Gdańsk Metropolitan Area aim at making the public transport system an attractive alternative to the private car. The entire Gdańsk Metropolitan Area has invested in environmentally-friendly and reliable bus stock (e.g. hybrid buses). To further improve transport in the Area, an intelligent system of monitoring and controlling the road traffic is planned. Integration of the cycling routes will create another attractive alternative to the car or public transport. Water tram shuttles offer a popular means of seasonal transport from and to the shoreline localities of the metropolis.
