Metropolis Open to the World
RAILWAYS – THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM OF THE ECONOMY
Four international railway trunk lines cross the voivodship:
• from Gdańsk via Szczecin to the German border,
• from Gdynia via Warsaw and Cracow down to the Czech and Slovak border,
• from Gdynia via Bydgoszcz, Łódź, and Katowice to the western and southern state
borders,
• from Gdynia via Olsztyn to Kaliningrad, or via Białystok to Belarus.
These lines form sections of the pan-European transport corridors, and via secondary
junctions are linked to the main industrial centres in the country.
Pomerania has 1350 km of railway lines in operation. The density of the railway network
is one of the highest in the country. The ratio between the operated lines and the size
of the region is 7.4 (line length per 100 sq. km). The high status of the metropolis and
region on the railway map of Poland stems from e.g. the fact that a large proportion
of the cargo reaching the seaports is delivered by rail.
The Swift Commuter Train is but an introduction to the modern,metropolitan railway system.

Many trunk routes of strategic significance to the economy are undergoing modernisation
to improve the efficiency and speed up the railway traffic. In effect, however, not
only the travelling speed will increase, but also safety and reliability of the railway infrastructure.
Modernisation of the regional track network, on the other hand, will facilitate access
to the metropolis for people living outside the centre, i.e. improve their opportunities
of taking up jobs in the centre. Scheduled for implementation too, is the project of
expanding the metropolitan railway system. Based on the existing track lines of the swift
commuter trains, extended to include newly laid lines, the metropolitan railway will cover
the western districts of Gdańsk and Gdynia, including the Gdańsk airport and – ultimately
– the airport in Babie Doły. The metropolitan railway will be a far quicker means
of transport than a private car or bus.
