A modern and functionally efficient facility, combined with an extended apron will increase the airport’s capacity to 5 million passengers as soon as in 2011. According to the projections, the passenger traffic will grow to 3.5 million in 2012, and Photo: www.artdesign.net.pl - 18 - in 2016 will exceed 5 million. The airport investment will be complemented with comprehensive modernisation of the main access roads, and the building of a swift metropolitan train line. Alongside the expansion of the existing airport, another option is pondered, i.e. the potential building of another civilian airport in the metropolis (on the site of the ex-military airfield in Babie Doły, Commune of Kosakowo). The other facility would increase the overall capacity by far more planes, passengers, and cargo, within a radius extending far beyond the borders of the Pomeranian Voivodship. Graph 7. Metropolis Open to the World ROAD TRANSPORT – ON THE GOOD COURSE The Metropolitan Area and the region lie exactly on the convergence of international trunk transport corridors running from Scandinavia and North-Eastern Europe to Southern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea in one direction, and from the northern part of Western Europe to Eastern Europe. The grid of the existing international and national roads links the region to: Southern Europe via the Czech Republic and Slovakia (E-75, E-77, and national roads Nos. 1 and 7), Eastern Europe via Kaliningrad (E-22, national road No. 22), and Western Europe via Germany (E-28, national road No. 6). The network of regional and local roads serves transport within the region and metropolitan area. The length of all roads within the voivodship system adds up to nearly 19 thousand km. Support from the European Union has contributed substantially to a number of road projects recently completed in the metropolis. They all facilitate transit and the residents’ errands within the agglomeration. The list of the projects includes, e.g.: • modernisation of road No. 7, section Gdańsk – Elbląg, • construction of the last stretch of the Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski Route and Janka Wiśniewskiego Street, which link the port and industrial estates of Gdynia with the express road S-6 (national road No. 6), • construction of the Różowa Road in Gdynia, • modernisation of Marynarki Polskiej Street to facilitate access to the inner port area and the ferry terminal, • modernisation of the road system leading to the new DCT container terminal and the industrial estates in the eastern part of the Gdańsk port, • redevelopment of the crossing of Słowackiego, Grunwaldzka, and Kościuszki Streets in Gdańsk, • modernisation of national road No. 1, section Pruszcz Gdański-Pszczółki, • modernisation of road No. 6 between Reda and Wejherowo. The A1 motorway in construction is of strategic importance for the development of the Metropolitan Area. Linking the region to southern Poland and Europe, the road will offer the shortest route from Scandinavia down south the continent and onwards towards the East, along the VI European transport corridor. The motorway is already in operation over an almost 100 km long section from the junction in Różyny, the Commune of Pruszcz Gdański, to the locality of Nowe Marzy near Grudziądz in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodship. The entire length of the motorway, which will continue across Toruń, via Łódź, Częstochowa, and Katowice, up to the Polish-Czech border, is to be ready in 2011. - 19 - The A1 motorway has improved transport in the region.
