TRANSPORT ACCESSIBILITY The role of the Gdańsk Metropolitan Area in transport goes beyond its being the main node in the region. It is one of the prime transport hubs in Central and Eastern Europe, its component elements including two modern and ice-free seaports of Gdańsk and Gdynia. Both ports are linked to the railway system which forms an interchange of three SEA GATES TO THE WORLD The seaports of the metropolis have undergone substantial transformation over the last two decades. They have become modern transport hubs adequately equipped to handle almost any type of cargo in import, export, and international transit. Huge-scale investments have changed the structure of the loads handled. The share of traditional bulk cargo such as coal and coke, sulphur, or crude oil and its derivatives, has gone down giving way to grain, gases, and chemical products. The volumes handled are on the rise, particularly in the general cargo sector supplying the retail market on the one hand, and manufacturers and traders operating in the domestic market on the other hand. The ports of Gdańsk and Gdynia are, for instance, the prime Polish locations handling and distributing imported and exported vehicles, and the main point receiving supplies of citrus fruit and bananas designated to the domestic market and Central Europe. Thanks to the intensively developed, modern port infrastructure, Gdańsk and Gdynia today have four container terminals whose handling capacity stands at 1.5 million TEU. These are complemented with two modern ro-ro terminals and three terminals taking mixed passenger/vehicle ferries. Metropolis Open to the World In anticipation of the growing trend in the container-based and ro-ro trading, both ports are undertaking further investments to enable more efficient handling of more vessels and higher cargo volumes. The largest projects planned, in preparation by the port authorities and investors, include construction of a new ferry terminal capable of handling the ferry-carried cargo in Gdynia, expansion of the container and ro-ro terminals in the port of Gdańsk, and erection of modern logistic centres to back the container terminals in both ports. REGULAR SHIPPING SERVICES The network of the sea routes along which shipping services are regularly offered from the ports of the Gdańsk Metropolis is getting denser by the years. Hence, the port areas abound in service providers, with manufacturers following suit. the two ice-free seaports of Gdańsk and Gdynia offer convenient shipping services to numerous ports in 47 countries.
