TRANSPORT ACCESSIBILITY<br />

The role of the Gdańsk Metropolitan Area <strong>in</strong> transport goes beyond its be<strong>in</strong>g the ma<strong>in</strong><br />

node <strong>in</strong> the region. It is one of the prime transport hubs <strong>in</strong> Central <strong>and</strong> Eastern Europe,<br />

its component elements <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g two modern <strong>and</strong> ice-free seaports of Gdańsk <strong>and</strong><br />

Gdynia. Both ports are l<strong>in</strong>ked to the railway system which forms an <strong>in</strong>terchange of three<br />

SEA GATES TO THE WORLD<br />

The seaports of the metropolis have undergone substantial transformation over the<br />

last two decades. They have become modern transport hubs adequately equipped<br />

to h<strong>and</strong>le almost any type of cargo <strong>in</strong> import, export, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational transit. Huge-scale<br />

<strong><strong>in</strong>vest</strong>ments have changed the structure of the loads h<strong>and</strong>led. The share of traditional<br />

bulk cargo such as coal <strong>and</strong> coke, sulphur, or crude oil <strong>and</strong> its derivatives, has gone down<br />

giv<strong>in</strong>g way to gra<strong>in</strong>, gases, <strong>and</strong> chemical products. The volumes h<strong>and</strong>led are on the rise,<br />

particularly <strong>in</strong> the general cargo sector supply<strong>in</strong>g the retail market on the one h<strong>and</strong>,<br />

<strong>and</strong> manufacturers <strong>and</strong> traders operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the domestic market on the other h<strong>and</strong>.<br />

The ports of Gdańsk <strong>and</strong> Gdynia are, for <strong>in</strong>stance, the prime Polish locations h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> distribut<strong>in</strong>g imported <strong>and</strong> exported vehicles, <strong>and</strong> the ma<strong>in</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t receiv<strong>in</strong>g supplies<br />

of citrus fruit <strong>and</strong> bananas designated to the domestic market <strong>and</strong> Central Europe.<br />

Thanks to the <strong>in</strong>tensively developed, modern port <strong>in</strong>frastructure, Gdańsk <strong>and</strong> Gdynia today<br />

have four conta<strong>in</strong>er term<strong>in</strong>als whose h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g capacity st<strong>and</strong>s at 1.5 million TEU. These<br />

are complemented with two modern ro-ro term<strong>in</strong>als <strong>and</strong> three term<strong>in</strong>als tak<strong>in</strong>g mixed<br />

passenger/vehicle ferries. Ferry boats play an important role <strong>in</strong> h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g both the passen-<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational trunk l<strong>in</strong>es regulated under the <strong>in</strong>ternational AGC agreements. Here, too,<br />

three road routes of key importance for transit traffic converge. The air carriers served<br />

by the Lech Wałęsa International Airport <strong>in</strong> Gdańsk ensure swift <strong>and</strong> direct transport to<br />

several score cities <strong>in</strong> Europe.<br />
