<strong>POSITION</strong> <strong>DESCRIPTION</strong><strong>POSITION</strong> TITLE:REPORTS TO:SITE:Process EngineerProcess ManagerRavensbourne WorksDATE: January 2012PREPARED BY:Rebecca HaigDIMENSIONS: Direct Staff 0PURPOSETo carry out process activities and projects that improve efficiencies, costs, product quality andenvironmental performance of the production processes at the Ravensbourne Works.NATURE & SCOPERavensdown is a consumer co-operative driven by the needs of its shareholders, the land usersof New Zealand and Australia. Ravensdown’s mission is to enable land users to optimise thefertility of their soils through analysis, advice and supply of the appropriate materials where andwhen required at the lowest sustainable net cost.Ravensdown has a total staff of 570 staff located in Head Office in Christchurch, seven salesregions: Northland/ Waikato, Central North Island, Western Lower North Island, Eastern LowerNorth Island, Northern South Island, Central South Island and Southern South island,manufacturing plants at Hornby, Ravensbourne, and Ravensbourne, and 120 stores staff spreadthroughout New Zealand. In addition Ravensdown has 50 staff based in Western Australiaproviding products and services within Australia. Ravensdown is currently developing a businessin Queensland/ Northern New South Wales with assistance from the Cane Growers. It isanticipated this will be a full service Ravensdown offer to farmers in these states within three


years. Ravensdown has expanded its traditional solid NPKS fertiliser business by significantlygrowing the business in a number of other related directions. Ancillary businesses that havebeen developed include agricultural chemicals, compound NPK fertilisers, animal healthproducts, anthelmintics and eco-n. Other services to support the products are farm mapping,analytical services, ground and aerial spreading businesses and a customer centre.To ensure that Ravensdown continues to meet the needs for quality cost effective fertiliserproducts to its farmer shareholders it is essential staff are competent in their roles, are fullyconversant with the manufacture, quarrying, spreading and stores and despatch processes andare able to use them to their full potential.The Process Engineer reports to the Process Manager. The incumbent works as part of theProcess Management team to continually improve efficiencies, costs, product quality andperformance of Works operations and of operations throughout the company. The Processengineer will draw support from and work closely with other positions within the Ravensbournesite such as the Operations Manager, Acid Plant Manager, Laboratory staff, as well as otherfunctions companywide.The Ravensbourne Works currently operates a sulphuric acid plant, a superphosphatemanufacturing plant and a despatch operation. The optimisation of these plants is critical to thesuccess of the Works operation and a key role of the Process Engineer is to identify andimplement projects for continual improvement. A primary focus will be on improving qualitymanagement (quality), $/ton (cost), production rate (speed) and the environmentalperformance (people and environment). Completion of projects must be within budgetedrequirements, to the prescribed project plan and scope, and deliver the expected benefits.The Process Engineer will be required to work with stakeholders at Ravensdown’s othermanufacturing sites to ensure consistency is achieved and cross-site projects are completedsuccessfully. In addition the Process Engineer will be expected to provide process engineeringsupport in a trouble shooting/diagnostic role to assist in maximising Overall EquipmentEffectiveness (OEE).Ravensdown is aiming to achieve world best practice in the manufacture and distribution offertilisers. The incumbent will be expected to provide a high level of innovation in strivingtoward this goal. Significant interaction with the company’s other plants to benchmark andoptimise processes is an essential component of the role.KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES1AccountabilitiesTo contribute to the ongoing efficiency ofthe Ravensbourne Works through thedevelopment and overseeing of theimplementation of sound projectmanagement systems and procedures.KPI’sProject management systems and tools inplace and being utilised.Administration of the processchange/project management system toensure effective project managementoccurs.
