The snom 4S SIP components are the perfect
building blocks for Voice-over-IP in a small enterprise.
In the snom 4S box, all of these components
are found in a small piece of hardware and configured
in a way that fulfils most of the requirements
of such installations.
Hosted Services
While today‘s Internet Telephone Service Providers
(ITSP) offer fantastic prices for terminating
PSTN calls, their limited functionality often makes
it difficult for business customers to see any real
advantages. The box addresses this problem by
providing the necessary functionality locally and
using only the “dial tone” of the ITSP as service.

merely to guarantee quality of service for your
telephony traffic, the telephony cost savings will
far exceed the investment in a telephone line. If
your ITSP respects packet priorities, you can run
all your traffic via one DSL line and be sure that no
other traffic will compromise your telephone calls.
PSTN Connectivity
There are many PSTN gateways out there
that provide a basic PSTN termination service for
SIP. However, when it comes to features like transfer
and pickup, they can cause headaches for the
system administrator. This is because these PSTN
gateways essentially provide a dial-tone-like feature
set. Just like in the case of ITSP, the snom 4S
box can be used to prioritize the PBX services that
you need to run a business.

You then have a SIP-based
infrastructure that will run completely
on customer premises.
Wizard Installation
The box uses a standard
compact flash memory card for
the software and the configuration
information. We have prepared
a web-based configuration
wizard that sets up the content
of the compact flash for you.
Even if you don‘t use DHCP, you
can set up your box very quickly
and easily.
If you want to back up
your configuration, simply take
out the compact flash and use
your PC to make a local copy.

diskless and fan-less hardware.
Using Linux as the operating
system gives you the necessary
stability against network attacks
and viruses, and running the box
in your network is just as easy as
running another Linux box – but
without the hassle of setting up
the Linux installation!
The Form Factor
You don‘t need an extra
server room for the box. It is so
small that you can hide it easily
under your desk. And as there
are no moving parts, this also
means no noise. Particularly for
customers who do not operate
equipment in a separate room
it is great not to have another
source of noise
Virtuality
If you have a troublesome
network, you might want to run
your telephony matters in a
separate network. Because the
snom box supports VLAN, you
typically won’t have to change
any cables. Simply run your box
and your SIP endpoints in a virtual
LAN.

Web Interface
Like all snom products, the
snom box can also be administrated
via a web interface. In
the case of the snom box, you
would simply log on to the web
interface of the proxy to change
dial plans or authorization information.
Users can log on to the
proxy to see their last calls,
change their preferences or set
up a local address book.

The snom 4S Proxy and
the snom 4S media server are
tried and tested. They have
been tested against numerous
SIP implementations and have
proved themselves on the market
for several years. They offer
a tremendous number of features
that are all available in the
