LAFARGEMaxCem ® Blended CementImproved StrengthImproved WorkabilityImproved Placeability

MaxCem ® Blended CementMaxCem is a blend ofGround Granulated BlastFurnace Slag (GGBFS)and portland cement.MaxCem is suitablefor use in virtually allconcrete and concreteproduct applicationsand eliminates theneed for additionalcement silos. Enhancedstrength and workabilitycharacteristics can beachieved using MaxCem.Improved Strength MaxCem surpasses the strength of portland mixesat 28 days and beyond. MaxCem has been used successfully in concretepatching applications.Improved Workability Concrete produced with MaxCem improves theworkability of the concrete and has better finishing characteristics.Improved Placeability Concrete produced with MaxCem improves theplaceability of concrete. Standard vibration provides rapid consolidation withreduced segregation and honeycombing.Reduced Permeability MaxCem lowers the permeability of concrete. Lowerpermeability reduces the ingress of water and salts, increasing the durability ofthe concrete and protection of reinforcing steel.Reduced Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) MaxCem improves the resistance toASR by decreasing the permeability of the concrete and preventing the migrationof alkalis to reactive aggregates, and by decreasing the total alkali content inthe concrete. Research has confirmed that the use of slag cement in properproportions in concrete is effective in reducing the potential for excessiveexpansion of concrete due to ASR. Confirmation testing should be performedon a specific project basis.Increased Flexibility and Improved Performance Through Ternary BlendsMaxCem can be combined with fly ash to maximize economics while providingimproved performance over traditional straight cement concrete.MaxCem can be combined with silica fume to deliver high performance concrete. This enhances reinforcement protection from chloride corrosion while increasingthe placeability, finishability and strength of the concrete mix.Eliminate Need for Additional Silos MaxCem can be used in virtually allconcrete applications, eliminating the need for additional silos.Improved Night Visibility and Color Options MaxCem’s lighter color improvesnight visibility and accommodates the use of color additives.Environmentally Friendly Alternative As a replacement for portland cement,MaxCem reduces the amount of energy needed to produce a yard of concrete;thereby, generating overall savings of our natural resources.Lafarge Blended Cements provide a significantcontribution to sustainable construction. The useof these materials in concrete production consumesless energy and offers improved efficiency andbuilding performance. These materials can alsobe used to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energyand Environmental Design) points in the USGBC's(U.S. Green Building Council) LEED program.

A Summary of the Advantages of MaxCemBenefits in Hardened Concrete (will vary based on slag proportion)• Improves the ultimate strength of concrete – both compressive and flexural• Improves durability by blocking the ingress of damaging, water-solublechemicals• Improves resistance to sulfate attack in soil, groundwater andindustrial waste• Reduces the potential for damaging concrete expansions due toalkali-silica reaction• Gives concrete a lighter color after curing, which facilitates the use ofcolor additives• More economical due to improved cement efficiencyBenefits in Fresh Concrete MaxCem is compatible with conventional concreteadmixtures and improves overall on-the-job performance including:• Pumpability• Flowability• Workability• Placeability• Extrusion• More rapid consolidationMaxCem is produced in accordance with ASTM C 595, Standard Specificationfor Blended Hydraulic Cements, and AASHTO M 240, Standard Specification forBlended Hydraulic Cement, specifications by blending GGBFS cement and portlandcement, using very stringent quality control procedures. MaxCem is suitablefor use in essentially all concrete and concrete product applications. Reducedpermeability, enhanced strength and improved workability characteristics canbe achieved and, depending on the proportions, resistance from sulfates andalkali silica reactivity can also be achieved.MaxCem is availablein various blendproportions to meetyour project needs.MaxCem is produced to meet the requirements of slag modified portlandcement Type I (SM), or portland blast-furnace slag cement Type I (S), dependingon the manufacturing location. MaxCem qualifies as a Type I (SM) when theslag constituent is less than 25% and as a Type I (S) when the slag constituentis greater than 25%.Product claims are based on proper use in accordance with recognized industrystandards.
