Assistant Housekeeping Manager, Beverly Wilshire Beverly Hills (A Four Seasons Hotel)
“I first started working with Four Seasons while attending my junior year at the UH TIM
school. I was fortunate enough to earn a summer internship at their property in Wailea,
Maui where I was able to spend time at various departments before I started working in
my focus department which was recreation at the time. The experience allowed me to
see first hand what being a manager entailed and how each department operated
within the hotel. On top of that I met with the Learning Manager at least once every
week to talk about how my internship was going and answer any questions I had about
what it takes to be a successful manager.
In my final semester at the UH TIM school I interviewed with the Beverly Wilshire
and not only did they offer me an Assistant Housekeeping Manager position but
they also took care of my moving expenses form Hawai‘i to California, provided me
with a signing bonus, gave me a room in the hotel until I found a place to live, had another
manager assigned to help show me around the city, and surprised me by having
one of my managers pick me up from the airport when I arrived!
At two months I had spent at least a day in every department. I had breakfast with our
Director of Marketing, lunch with the Director of Human Resources, and dinner with the
Assistant Director of Rooms. My mentor, who I meet with to talk about my growth as a
manager, is the Director of Food and Beverage, my roommate is the Assistant Front
Desk Manager, and the Assistant Housekeeping Manager who is training me graduated
from the UH TIM school and is from Kaimukī! While this has all been very exciting and
fun a lot is expected from new managers. Everyday there are new and different challenges
than the day before which can lead to some really long hours. I think having patience
and a willingness to learn are two skills that will take you far in your career
whether it is in the hospitality industry or any other profession.”
TIM INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
At the TIM School, we are committed to help prepare you for your future and
we strive to provide you with opportunities that will not only challenge you in
the classroom but through your internships as well.
The goal of our internship program is to give you the hands-on, front-line, and
management experience that will allow you to use what you learn in the classroom
in the "laboratory of the real world". A step-by-step guide for completing
the internship requirements are listed below.
TIM 100
All TIM majors are required to first enroll in TIM 100 which meets, in a classroom
setting, twice a week. This class provides you with the tools that will help
you to select and obtain an internship (resume and cover letter writing, interview
attire, interviewing skills, business etiquette, etc.) and ultimately, a career
opportunity that is right for you. Through individual research projects, group
discussions, and guest speakers, you will learn about the various segments of
the travel industry, specific company operations, and the array of duties and
responsibilities that comes with management positions.
TIM 200
The focus of this course is a written report describing the student’s 400-hour
work experience and the comparison of theories learned in class and practiced
in the field. The internship provider offers guidance through a midpoint
and final evaluation. Your paper will reflect these results, as well as a discussion
on your ability to meet goals set forth at the beginning of your internship.
In writing the report, the fundamentals of professional business writing are
stressed.
TIM 300 or TIM 400
At this level of internship, you are now ready to work at a higher level position;
one with more responsibility. The options to complete this internship level are:
TIM 300, the regular advance internship; TIM 400, the Executive Internship; or
the Community Service Internship.
For questions about our internship program please contact Kim Brooks, Internship
& Career Placement Coordinator, at 808.956.4885 or brookski@hawaii.edu.
