Ciencias Atmosfericas, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, SP, Brazil(8) Instituto de Física, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil(9) Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA), Manaus, BrazilThe focus of LBA-CALIRE 2001 was to improve our knowledge required to determine thenet exchange of trace gases and aerosols between the atmosphere and the Amazon region, tounderstand the regulating processes and how they are influenced by anthropogenic activities.We present measurements on the vertical distribution of volatile organic compounds (VOC),carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, aerosol concentrations, and meteorological conditions abovea primary rain forest site, that will be used to develop an integrated and quantitativeunderstanding of the interactions of biogenic source fluxes, atmospheric transport and verticalexchange, and photochemical processing over the tropical forest. A specific objective withinthese studies was the impact of the Manaus plume on the chemical processing within theboundary layer. High product/precursors ratios were observed at fixed altitudes showing thatthe Manaus plume get stratified in a rather complex fashion.
