surveillance The process of systematic collection, orderly consolidation,<br />

and analysis of data, with prompt dissemination and feedback<br />

of the results to those who need to know, particularly those<br />

who are in a position to take action.<br />

travel-associated Cases of legionellosis acquired during travel (e.g. from a<br />

cruise ship or a hotel).<br />

treatment target Direct specification of acceptable technologies for specific<br />

circumstances.<br />

validation The process of obtaining accurate and reliable evidence<br />

that a water safety plan is effective.<br />

verification The application of methods, procedures, tests and other<br />

evaluations, in addition to monitoring, to determine compliance<br />

with a water safety plan.<br />

virulence Degree of an organism’s ability to cause disease, as indicated<br />

by mortality rate from the related disease, or its ability to<br />

invade tissues and cause disease.<br />

water safety plan A comprehensive risk assessment and risk management<br />

approach that encompasses all steps in water supply, from<br />

catchment to consumer.<br />

whirlpool bath Type of hot tub sometimes found in bathrooms of hotel rooms<br />

or private residences. The bath is fitted with high-velocity water<br />

jets or air injection, and the water is emptied after each use.<br />
