Connecting an internal Mini-SAS to SATAFan-out cablesA mini-SAS to SATA fan out cable has a mini-SASconnector (SFF-8087) on one end and four SATAconnectors on the other end. Plug the mini-SASconnector into the appropriate 'Jn' connector on theadapter. Plug each of the SATA connectors into thedrive backplane. The cable attached to each SATAcable should have a number that indicates theconnection order within the mini-SAS connector. Thenumber on the cable indicates the order that the SATAcable should be connected to drive slots on thebackplane. Consult the documentation for yourbackplane to determine the relationship from the SATAconnector to drive slot.Connecting an internal Mini-SAS tointernal Mini-SAS cablesA mini-SAS to mini-SAS cable has a mini-SAS (SFF-8087) connector at each end of the cable. Consult the documentation foryour backplane to determine the relationship from theMini-SAS connector to drive slot.LED Control for Internal SAS ConnectorsThis section provides the instructions that define thecable connections needed to exercise LED Control forhard drive backplanes. This section applies to thefollowing models: R608; R60F; H608; and H60F.These adapters have been designed to affect LEDControl functionality through an SGPIO interface or anI2C interface. These interfaces require different cableconnections and those connections are specified inthis chapter.Using SGPIO for LED ControlSGPIO with an internal mini-SAS to mini-SAS cableThe signals for SGPIO are included within the Mini-SAS connector located on the adapter. These signalsare routed to the hard drive backplane based upon thecable used for the backplane connection. Consult thedocumentation for your backplane to determine if itsupports SGPIO.SGPIO with an internal Mini-SAS to SATAFan-out cablesFollow the instructions for a connection with internalMini-SAS to SATA Fan-out cables. The fan out endshould have an additional connector that is an 8 wireconnector. This connector must be connected to anSGPIO header on the hard drive backplane. (SeeExample 2) Consult the documentation for yourbackplane to determine the relationship from theSGPIO connector to the drive slots.Note, the SGPIO sideband connector is not standardand the connector must match the connector on thebackplane. Please see the backplane's and cable'sdocumentation for more detailsUsing SES-I2C for LED ControlThe signals for LED Control via I2C are generated atthe I2C headers of the adapter. The signals are carriedon a 3 wire cable and connected to the hard drivebackplane. Consult the documentation for yourbackplane to determine if it supports LED Control viaI2C.In general an I2C cable is needed for each group offour drives. However, there are hard drive backplanesthat have more drives per I2C cable. The I2C cablesshould be connected according to the table on the nextpage.32 ATTO Technology Inc.
