“Unique hotels, where every stay
is filled with emotion and discovery”.
Hostal Nicolas de Ovando, Santo Domingo - Dominican Republic
PREFACE
An exceptional collection and growing fast
With the launch of the first MGallery guide, we invited you to discover a
collection of forty hotels that didn’t conform to the norm. Hotels that promised
travellers stopping there moments full of discovery and feeling. So you could relive
the Golden Age of the Kingdom of Siam at Hotel Muse in Bangkok, experience
the ultimate in wellbeing at the Capovaticano Resort Thalasso & Spa Hotel in
the heart of Calabria, facing the Aeolian Islands and the Stromboli volcano.
Or follow in the footsteps of Sir Winston Churchill at St Ermin’s, MGallery’s first
hotel in London.
Whether situated in the middle of a city or in decidedly unusual settings, they
all possess their own remarkable personality and stand out for their unique style.
With around fifty locations, MGallery is arousing increasing interest from both
hoteliers and owners, and will soon have over one hundred hotels.
MGallery has decided to marry its growth to a renewed visual identity, even
more elegant and distinctive.
I am proud to present to you the brand’s new logo in this 2012 edition of the
MGallery guide, designed to match the spirit and aspirations of the collection.
It was the character and singularity of the MGallery hotels that attracted our
ambassador, Kristin Scott Thomas, a charismatic actress with a rare charm and
elegance, who perfectly embodies the philosophy of our brand.
Having attended the major events of 2011, Kristin Scott Thomas has also been
involved in the creation of this 2012 edition of our guide.
In these pages, she invites you to have a look at her personal travel notes and
shares a few of her favourites and memories with you.
Welcome to a world of exception.
EDITORIAL
A year ago, I was offered an unexpected role…
that of ambassador for the MGallery collection. And I
must confess that this first year has been one filled with
emotions and events.
After having participated in the launch of this unique
collection, I went to Hanoi for the opening of the Hôtel
de l’Opéra, a special place I urge you to discover…
You’ll be sure to be seduced by the remarkable charm
of this hotel, set in the very heart of the city, where the
highly theatrical décor is like a change of scenery in
itself.
As with all MGallery hotels, the Hôtel de l’Opéra boasts
additional flair and a very specific feel, which for me is
an essential source of inspiration…
I also greatly enjoy sharing with you some of my
memories of other places through my travel notes.
Throughout the pages of this second edition of the
MGallery guide you’ll discover some of my most
recent absolute favourites… Amsterdam, with its striking
combinations and its vivid palette of contrasts, Cabourg
and its gourmet treasures from the hedged farmlands of
Normandy, or London, the city of endless possibilities.
I hope that these exclusive secrets will awaken your
desire to travel and open doors to unique experiences
for you, in ever more surprising and exceptional places.
Yours truly,
Cabourg
Time without end
There are some places where time seems to stop so that you can fully appreciate the joy and intensity of every
moment. Le Grand Hôtel Cabourg is one of these very special places. Immortalised by Marcel Proust, who came
up with a wonderful description of it in In Search of Lost Time, this theatre of emotions embodies the wonderful spirit
of the Belle Epoque, with all of its romantic charm, dating back to the beginning of the 20 th century. Whatever
season you choose to visit, Le Grand Hôtel Cabourg can give you the thing that’s most precious of all time.
Time to savour local ingredients and delicacies from the sea… Time to enjoy a brunch or a memorable afternoon
tea with hot chocolate and one of those famous ”madeleines”… Time to live, to enjoy the stunning rooms with their
modern décor, with views of the sea or the delightful gardens flooded with flowers. It is the ideal place to relax
in a dreamlike setting. Le Grand Hôtel Cabourg is one of the few hotels on the Normandy coast providing direct
access to the beach. It is also the only one with a private beach with its own restaurant by the water.
A ”must” for your next romantic getaway, as well as the perfect base to enjoy all the treasures the region has to
offer, including horse-riding, sailing, golf, horse races or a trip to one of the ancient villages of the Pays d’Auge.
A cross between an escape from it all and the most practical destination, where your dreams of well-being become
a reality at last!
Cabourg through Kristin Scott Thomas’ eyes
When I think of Cabourg, I get a bit nostalgic about the time – a very long time ago – that
I won the best actress award at the romantic film festival there. I was invited to the Grand
Hôtel, a majestic building with a breathtaking view of the sea. Even now, this hotel takes
me back to that wonderful time, and when I go back there, I feel the same excitement,
the same emotions. I shut my eyes and imagine Marcel Proust, a regular here, looking for
inspiration in this magical place.
Just like the great author, I wander around Cabourg In search of lost time; I love strolling
along the water’s edge, breathing in the sea air, scanning the horizon to try and imagine
the English coast in the distance… sometimes I head off inland, to enjoy the beautiful
countryside and sublime manor houses.
My little breaks here are also all about food – an excuse to savour the regional specialities:
camembert of course, but also Pont l’Evèque for the more daring among you, cider,
oysters, seafood… And it is always a very emotional moment when I walk along the
D-Day landing beaches, where the sea washes over another page in our history…
Dinard
A jewel between Belle Epoque and
Modernity
A garden town by the sea… that’s Dinard in a nutshell! But the legendary seaside resort also brims with art and
history. Boasting an extraordinary architectural heritage with over 400 listed villas, Dinard’s sumptuous buildings
will take you back in time to the turn of the 20 th century. Established at the height of the Belle Epoque, the Royal
Emeraude promises you a romantic break in Brittany. Just a stone’s throw away from the beach, Plage de L’Ecluse,
the casino and the Promenade du Clair de Lune, this rated hotel is all about escapism, with its unique boat-like
architecture. Each of the 47 rooms has been fully renovated in styles based on 4 themes: ocean liner staterooms,
British India, the Orient Express and aviation. Onboard you’ll find all modern conveniences juxtaposed with a
traditional Belle Epoque atmosphere. To top off your stay, why not visit the fitness centre where you can enjoy a
massage or a Turkish bath? Or give yourself a treat in the hotel’s tearoom. Under a stunning glass roof, you can
savour a delicious hot chocolate for afternoon tea, or choose from a menu of 21 different varieties of tea, served
If the 16 th arrondissement is one of the most elegant neighbourhoods of the French capital, it is also the one that
best symbolizes the Parisian lifestyle in the early 19 th century.
A lifestyle you can enjoy yourself if you choose the Hôtel Baltimore for a stay steeped in sophistication and
romanticism. Located just a few steps from the Champs-Elysées and the Eiffel Tower, this prestigious town house,
built in 1892, was transformed into a hotel in 1920 and named after its first guest, Lord Baltimore. Inside, fabrics in
warm colours, antique furniture and original paintings give the place a cosy atmosphere, conducive to relaxation
Located in the heart of the European capital and close to the cathedral, the Cour du Corbeau is not only one of the
Much more than just a hotel, the Cour du Corbeau is a journey through history, time and the city. A souvenir
of another era, this building that was an Alsatian inn at the time of the Tsars and Princes, has traversed through
five centuries of Strasbourg history and has accommodated such illustrious guests as Frederick II, King of Prussia,
Refinement, calm and serenity, the elegant interior features neo-baroque style furniture and materials as diverse
as Vosges sandstone, cobblestones, copper, glass, granite and pebbles in an intimate atmosphere enhanced by
touches of aubergine, raspberry and purple. Each of the 57 rooms is different and offers a sample of the history
Since then, the prestigious hotel Le Royal has become a haven of charm and classicism for those who want to
Aix-en-Provence
Shadows and lights
Poet, patron and artist, René of Anjou transformed Provence into a world where the finer things in life were king…
This culture of pleasure and well-being is exactly what you will find if you stay at the Grand Hôtel in Aix-en-
Provence, proud to bear the name of this illustrious epicure and lover of fine literature and fine foods. Designed to
resemble a romantic boudoir, the Grand Hôtel Roi René is a little haven of peace in the heart of the city of Cézanne
and a stone’s throw away from its historic centre. Those who have stopped off at this jewel of Aix’s past on their
travels – Sir Winston Churchill stayed here to write part of his memoirs – particularly appreciate the elegance and
harmony of the décor, the comfort and light of the rooms, and the discretion and sophistication of the service. After
a stroll through the city of 100 fountains, they will have worked up an appetite to take their seat at La Table du
Roi, to enjoy a daring cuisine brimming with the flavours of provence. A moment of pure pleasure, to be savoured.
Marseille
Marseille genuinely Mediterranean
”O time, suspend your flight, and you, happy hours! Suspend your race.” Alphonse de Lamartine’s words will
no doubt resonate in your mind when you stay at the Grand Hôtel Beauvau. Especially as the poet, as well as
composer Frédéric Chopin and lady of letters George Sand, stayed in this romantic haven of inspiration and a
base for journeys…
Journeys through time, as this lyrical hotel with its intense, warm atmosphere, has seen some 200 years of the history
of the Phocaean city… A journey to the heart of Provence, where period furniture from the time of Louis-Philippe and
Napoleon III are perfectly matched with traditional local fabrics. While the Grand Hôtel Beauvau pays a hearty
tribute to the region’s riches, to local arts and craftsmanship, it also enjoys a unique setting, with a breathtaking
view from the bar over the Vieux Port and the Mediterranean beyond. The perfect place to get away from it all!
Marseille through Kristin Scott Thomas’ eyes
Marseille contains the entire history of the Mediterranean.
I came to appreciate it while playing the role of Bérénice at the
wonderful Gymnase theatre. Every night after the show, we would
go down along the Canebière to get together at one of the many pubs that welcome you all
night long.
At the heart of the city there’s the Vieux Port, its joyful hustle and bustle and its must-see fish
market, where the fisherwomen call out to the passers-by with their inimitable and cheeky
banter.
Far from the bustling city centre, the Panier quarter is a peaceful haven that invites you to stroll
about at your leisure. With its small squares, its colourful allies and winding staircases, it remains
the favourite haunt of local artists and artisans, located around Lenche Square. There’s the
Estaque quarter at the city limits to be explored, whose name comes from the Provencal ”estaco,”
the attachment. Between the sea and the hills, this small port was the source of inspiration for
many artists such as Paul Cézanne or Auguste Renoir, who declared it ”the most beautiful in the
world”, and has provided the setting for many films, including Marius et Jeannette.
People come here with friends, to enjoy its ”panisses,” slices of fried mashed chickpeas and
Venice
Between secret gardens
and animated canals
Famed for its gondolas and St Mark’s square… the only town like it in the world, with its little islands connected
to each other by 400 bridges… Bewitching with its carnival… Venice, “the Floating City“, is a real cultural gem,
lying languid in its lagoon. On the threshold of the old town, in the characteristic district of Santa Croce, the
Papadopoli hotel is the ideal base from which to explore the charms of La Serenissima. From the outside, the
simple, traditional exterior seems to take on the very spirit of the city. But on the other side of the front door hides a
haven of sophistication, well hidden from prying eyes. Sumptuously elegant, the décor embodies the spirit of 18 th
century Italy, with its warm and pastel colours, Venetian chandeliers and exquisite materials. In the rooms, every
detail has been carefully designed to give guests an original and authentic experience… Overlooking the canal or
the famous Papadopoli gardens, they all boast a breathtaking view and guarantee a peaceful night’s sleep with
the gentle wake-up call of birdsong. A culinary island in the middle of the winter garden, the restaurant showcases
an area devoted to Corto Maltese, the legendary comic book hero created by Hugo Pratt – a regular at the hotel.
Unforgettable Florence
If you are wandering through the streets of Florence, it means you are following in the footsteps of Donatello,
Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo… It also means discovering the Duomo, the Medici Chapel and…
the Cerretani. Built in the 17 th century, this hotel, imbued with 300 years of history, casts its elegant shadow over
the heart of the historic quarter of San Lorenzo. In the purest Florentine style, it pays tribute to the Italian Renaissance,
with its bevelled façade, studded with broad windows, its Florentine mirrors and its stunning Liberty staircase, as
light as air. The alchemy between the textures and the colours – iron, wood, velvet, red, gold – catches the light,
revealing a style which is both incredibly refined and completely authentic. Just like the architecture, the hotel’s
cuisine is a delicate pleasure. Il Michelangelo bar is well worth a visit, where subtle and simple Tuscan dishes are
prepared with incredible skill and care. In this romantic setting you can give your taste buds a real treat with one
of the local specialities, washed down with a glass of Chianti. And to help you get to grips with the real spirit of
Florence, the hotel organises private talks given by lecturers (from the city’s Art schools) on the theme of the ”arte dei
Florence through Kristin Scott Thomas’ eyes
Several years in a row I had the good fortune to be shooting a film in Florence. What a joy to
slip away from the set on the sly to visit the Uffizi Galleries, the Pitti Palace, and especially the
gelato man near the Ponte Vecchio…
In Florence you simply must buy gloves. I buy a pair of red ones every time.
The streets are littered with trattorias where you can devour a Linguini al pesto or a Florentina
for confirmed meat eaters.
On summer days, nothing beats the small stalls where you can find coconuts chilled by little
moving fountains.
At night, you simply must go up into the hills on a Vespa, your hair flying, in order to enjoy
the view of Florence at sunset.
Founded by the Emperor Agrippina in 50 A.D., the city of Cologne still bears traces of its ancient civilisation
Frankfurt
The Privilege of History
Frankfurt am Main – aka ”Mainhattan”, in reference to the river which runs through it and its many skyscrapers which
give it a passing resemblance to New York – is a city of contrasts. The tallest buildings rub shoulders with one of
Germany’s largest urban forests, and businessmen and art-lovers live happily side by side.
The Hotel Savigny is the perfect illustration of this city of contrasts. At first glance, you’ll be dazzled by its architecture
which seamlessly combines tradition and modernity, poetry and innovation. Depending on your taste and your
mood, you can choose between the old Wilhelminian style building, classed as a historic monument, and the
more up-to-date main building of the hotel. Whichever you decide, you’re guaranteed a comfortable stay and an
excellent level of service.
Sit back, relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of Goethe’s romantic garden, and the culinary delights offered in
the restaurant, Savigny’s.
The Quintessential Swiss Chalet
Economic capital of Switzerland, Zürich is a city of contrasts, where modern architecture and undercurrents of
avant-garde ideas live happily alongside the stately landscape of the Swiss Alps.
This whimsical character can also be found in the Hotel Continental, subtly combining innovation with tradition.
If the city is surprising, the hotel is astounding… Behind its contemporary façade, hides a haven of peace, offering
a warm welcome with its wooden furniture and deep comfy armchairs. Recently renovated, the urban Swiss rooms
reflect this mixture of innovation and tradition, with modern fittings and cosy décor, inspired by Swiss chalets.
You’ll also appreciate the Swiss way of life, on the lovely patio, nestled between the hotel’s different wings.
To enjoy the best that Swiss hospitality has to offer, you can have a break at the bar&diner of the hotel, l’Entupada.
Geneva
A collector’s guardian angel
The Hotel Rotary is in the image of its creator: atypical and unconventional. Keen traveller, architect and owner,
René Favre has always collected objects and furniture from his cultural journeys. A great collector of antiques,
he designed a decor both simple and elegant to house his collection and other treasures. Merging into the lively
Rue du Cendrier, the Rotary was founded in 1976, in the heart of the business district.
Upon entering, you’ll love the cosmopolitan decor combining warm colours and antiques. A Spanish church
altar here, used as a reception desk. Aubusson tapestries there, decorating the ceiling... Just a few steps from
Lake Geneva and the Old Town, this real ”museum” is a must for anyone wishing to discover poetic Geneva.
Both an international financial centre and a shopping Mecca, the city on the lake is also ideal to stroll in and
Geneva through Kristin Scott Thomas’ eyes
For me, Geneva is the perfect destination when all I want is some
peace and tranquillity…
From the banks of Lake Geneva to the vast parks full of flowers, the whole city is conducive to
happy daydreaming.
A former military patrol, the Promenade de la Treille has now been pacified and is the ideal
setting for a delightful romantic stroll. In the shade of two rows of centenarian chestnut trees, an
immense wooden bench, more than 120 m long, offers a fantastic vantage point… and it’s the
perfect refuge for anyone who wants to take a break and enjoy a good book.
After spending the morning strolling round the Plaine Plainpalais market, a popular haunt for
anyone interested in antiques and bric-a-brac, I tend to head to the place du Bourg-de-Four,
right in the heart of the old town, where I like to catch some rays on the terrace of one of its
picturesque cafés.
No trip to Geneva would be complete without a visit to the mouth-watering rue de Rives or rue
de la Confédération. I’m never disappointed there, thanks to the divine concoctions dreamt up
by the master Swiss ”chocolatiers.” Creations that I can devour with my eyes… without holding
Victorian grandeur in the heart of London
Ideally located in the heart of St James, just a stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and
Big Ben, the prestigious St Ermin’s Hotel boasts a quintessentially British spirit. Behind its red brick façade, the hotel
exudes a traditional English style with cream-coloured walls and floral fabrics. The lobby, as with all the rooms, offer
a formal elegance, seamlessly marrying the authentic décor with modern facilities. Here, the atmosphere is hushed;
the service is the very soul of discretion. And for good reason. In 1940, the great wartime leader and former Prime
Minister, Sir Winston Churchill gathered his team within its walls to plan covert operations during World War II.
There is also the story from the 50's of a spy who was said to have used the networked tunnels of Whitehall to
steal secret documents from the Foreign Office. One rumour even suggests that a secret passage still exists under
the lobby’s impressive staircase, linking the hotel to the Houses of Parliament...
London through Kristin Scott Thomas’ eyes
For me, London isn’t a city or a capital, it’s a little country, both in terms of its size and the
variety of its different areas! You can’t get more diverse than Belgravia, Clerkenwell and
Hampstead... The atmosphere here is unique, the contrasts live side by side and opposites
attract. For me it is the city where everything is possible. One day I’ll wander round the shops
of Bond Street and Mayfair... Another, I’ll stroll through St James’ Park or take a walk around
the trendy area of Brick Lane... then I’ll find a table at an adorable little Italian café on Bethnal
Green Road. Every moment is unique and different!
My favourite London trio? A visit to the Tate, a pub lunch in Marylebone or Notting Hill and
afternoon tea in a typical English tea room. In the evening I like to go out to the theatre… The
best productions in the world are put on here, and it’s no coincidence that plays are often
transferred to Broadway. On the programme: modern plays, West End musicals, free mini
concerts…
Finally, history lovers like me really should visit the Churchill War Rooms. This museum helps
us to understand the role played by England during the Second World War and find out
about the incredible organisation of the government during the conflict and the London Blitz.
Amsterdam
Genuine hospitality, intimacy
at the heart of Amsterdam
This historic hotel, located along the winding canals of central Amsterdam, is one of the finest examples of
architecture in the city. Originally, the facade of the Convent Hotel concealed five small residences that alternately
housed two monasteries in the Middle Ages and served as the headquarters for the newspaper ”De Tijd.”
From this illustrious past, a special atmosphere remains and can be found in its infinite detail: the stained glass
windows, the facade adorned with faience tiles, but also a replica of a 16 th century Pietà, which was discovered
in the hotel in 1985. The interior is just as rich in refined ornaments and ”internal displays” of elegance. Spacious
and decidedly contemporary, the rooms combine comfort and conviviality with their warm colours and their high
quality materials. On the walls, paintings of the Dutch school and a rich collection of books recall that Amsterdam
is one of the main cultural capitals of Europe, with its fifty museums including the famous Van Gogh Museum,
which houses some 200 paintings and 550 drawings.
Amsterdam through Kristin Scott Thomas’ eyes
You can’t beat a bicycle for getting around Amsterdam! I love this city because of its
stunning combinations and exciting contrasts. It’s as though you’re in a surrealist painting,
an impressive mix of colours and textures. But it’s impossible to sum up the soul of
Amsterdam in just a few words: there is the seediness of the Red District, but it’s also a
very arty city with lots of museums housing works by some of the most famous painters
from the Dutch School.
Ravishingly rebellious, for me, this city, intertwined with waterways, is imbued with a
really special atmosphere, thanks to its stunning houses running alongside the canals. I
love wandering around, looking at the reflection of the houses in the water, like trompe
l’œil paintings.
In a world of my own, my feet take me on a tour of tearooms, reminding me of Amsterdam’s
colonial past. When the evening falls, I’d recommend the wine bars too, because the
Dutch have wonderful palates and they really appreciate French wine. If you’re a bit more
daring, you might like to try some herring, “groene”, from a typical little stall.
”Art Nouveau”, art of life
Nestled in the heart of Vienna, the Hotel am Konzerthaus enjoys an exceptional location, close to all the cultural
venues in the city. The ultimate haven of hospitality, it is also remarkable for its fascinating design and unique
atmosphere, directly inspired by ”Art Nouveau”. Here, each decorative object and each detail recall this famous
art movement of the turn of the 20 th century, led by Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele. Thus, works
of art and sketches by Viennese artists line the walls of the hotel...
In the bar, a truly cosy alcove, in a delightfully nostalgic atmosphere, you can admire artefacts from one of the
coaches of the legendary Orient Express and a superb collection of Lalique glassware. This cosy and elegant
atmosphere is also evident in the sumptuous rooms decorated with Klimt paintings, with shimmering colours. When
Following Kafka’s footsteps
”Poets try to transplant other eyes onto men and thereby transform reality”, once said Franz Kafka. The memory of
this illustrious writer still hovers over the Century Old Town hotel, where the author of The Trial and Metamorphosis
had worked as an insurance clerk between 1908 and 1922. The first hostel to be built in Prague, in 1379,
the Century Old Town hotel has kept this literary spirit within its walls and also pays a major tribute to this great
writer.
Through its refined decoration, it also celebrates the neo-baroque style and recreates, for the comfort for its
guests, the warm and intimate atmosphere of the beginning of the century. Offering the same cosy and friendly
Oriental charms and legends
in a spectacular setting
In the 16 th century, Yemen, and more specifically Al Mokha, a favourite with the courts of Europe, gave us an early
taste for coffee… But this country, tucked in between the hottest desert in the world and the Red sea, has plenty
of other treasures to show off. Kingdom of the Queen of Sheba, Yemen has millennia of history behind it, where
myths and legends are based on the landscapes carved out of mountains, flowers and legendary routes. One
such road will take you to the town of Taiz, founded in the 12 th century by Saladin. It is here, before the famous
Al Ashrafiya mosque, that your dreams of the distant East will come to life. Perched on top of Mount Domalah, the
5-star Al Saeed Hotel opens its doors to you with pure Yemeni hospitality.
As you cross the threshold, you’ll be won over by the stunning lobby with its sophisticated décor. Your very own
Eastern promise will be fulfilled as you step into your room, a heady mix of oriental ambiance and modernity. The
theme continues in Le Bellevue restaurant, which guarantees a gourmet feast of local and international treats against
a stunning backdrop. With one eye on the city, you can savour a ”qeshr” – a famous local coffee – to relive the
good old days of those original coffee-lovers.
Historical and romantic hideaway
Tucked away in the centre of the colonial town of Santo Domingo, the Hotel Francés invites you on a picturesque
journey back in time, far away from the island’s tourist hot-spots. Here you can still get a sense of times gone by,
when this hotel was still the home of the Spanish Court’s Royal Treasurer back in the 16 th century.
Stepping into the lobby, you’ll catch sight of old stones, some of which are coral, relics of its prestigious past.
Relive the greatest hours of the island’s glorious history, in this building which once housed the apartments of the
governor’s officers. The flower-lined patio, framed with stone and red brick archways houses 19 rooms, with all
their deliciously colonial charm.
Special mention should be made of the le Patio restaurant which serves sophisticated dishes combining Dominican
and international flavours, in an intimate, romantic setting. The ultimate venue for quiet ”tête-à-tête” dining. Outside,
the former colonial district, a Unesco World Heritage site, clamours to you, inviting you on a stroll through history…
Stepping back into the New World
Located on the first paved street of the New World, the Hostal Nicolas de Ovando is a very special place, where
every stone, every patio and every fountain tells a story of Christopher Columbus’s Caribbean. A Unesco World
heritage site, this majestic building was once the residence of Nicolas de Ovando, the first governor of the Indies,
a contemporary of El Conquistador. The Hostal has retained its original walls from the time it was a fortress, as well
as its spirit, brimming with tradition. With 5 centuries of history behind it, this mythical venue invites you to enjoy a
sophisticated break in one of its 104 rooms and suites, decorated in a colonial or contemporary style, overlooking
the river, the four patios, the gardens or the famous cobbles of ”Las Damas.” In the middle of the Spanish patio,
the restaurant, La Résidence, will certainly know how to wake up your taste buds, with a mixture of creole and
french flavours.
Between the Spanish patio and the tropical garden, the Cibao Bar is one of those places where the ”tabaquero”,
the cigar maker, offers a selection of the best Dominican cigars, offering advice to the connoisseur, and tips to the
Bangkok through Kristin Scott Thomas’ eyes
For me, Bangkok is the epitome of the meeting between Asia’s past
and its future…
It’s something to do with the way the traditional architecture lives side by
side with unusually shaped modern buildings in this fascinating city.
Bangkok is indeed a city of contrasts, but also an incredibly welcoming place, with an amazing
energy. One of my greatest pleasures is to wander round the city’s many markets which come
to life as soon as the sun rises in the morning…
Pat Khlong Talat and Bang Rak are, for me, a real treat for all the senses, with all the fruit
and flowers and their mind-blowing array of colours and fragrances… As for Chatuchak, the
country’s biggest market, it has become the place to come for anyone interested in exquisite
fabrics and local craftsmanship.
After all of this hustle and bustle, I like to take some time out in one of the city’s many temples.
The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, right in the heart of the Royal Palace, is without a doubt
one of the most sumptuous and revered.
Then when the evening falls, a trip to the business district of Silom is a must… That’s where the
nightlife is at. Boutiques and shops are the main attraction here, and it’s quite an experience
to wander through the streets trying a fragrant noodle soup here, a sweet banana there, not
forgetting the ”Miang kham,” the traditional little spicy mouthfuls wrapped up to order.
A moment of pleasure in the open air
Halfway between the legendary beaches of Hua Hin and Cha Am, the graceful silhouette of the Veranda Resort
A hotel decorated in the style of a theatre,
imbued with the aura of an ancient city
Around the world there are cities whose mysterious aura entices travellers from far and wide… Hanoi is one of
them. An ancient city surrounded by parks and lakes, it stands out thanks to its oriental traditions, its bustling streets
and its colonial past. A jewel of this historic heritage, the Hôtel de l’Opéra offers travellers a sophisticated break
near the iconic Hanoi Opera House. A real sanctuary of peace and quiet tucked away from the busy old city, this
hotel, with its colonial architecture, can guarantee you a warm welcome. As soon as you arrive, you can’t fail to be
won over by the magic of the setting and the theatrical interior, filled with rich shades, silk drapes and flamboyantly
coloured furniture. The same decadence runs through the 107 rooms and suites that combine 21 st century comfort
with French sophistication and grand decor. Just as impressive are the relaxing Spa treatments and the bar, La Fée
Verte, where you can try a legendary absinthe. In the evening take a trip to Satine, a restaurant serving daringly
delicious dishes inspired by the Mediterranean.
live and share a smile.
Hanoi through Kristin Scott Thomas’ eyes
Strolling along the streets of Hanoi, why not try a bowl of Pho from
a tiny little pavement café, taking in 3,000 years of history in the
perpetually traditional heart of Asia. I love the rhythm of the place,
frenetic and slow at the same time, where people take the time to
On the shores of Hoan Kiem Lake, said to be inhabited by a legendary turtle, my imagination
is captivated by this surprising city. An intangible city, both full of energy, with its puppet shows,
and also strangely calm, in the shadow of its Flamboyants.
I love losing myself in the district of 36 Streets, all named after different trades. I let myself be
tempted by the silks, with their range of unexpected colours, the mysterious religious artefacts,
the complex painted wooden toys, exotic in their simplicity. Coming out of a shop where I’ve
picked up some embroidered tablecloths that remind me of my childhood in England, I find
myself opposite a “gothic” church, blackened by the years, a strangely European sight.
And the taxi back to the hotel, I let myself be engulfed by the energy of the city, the raucous
noise of car horns, mopeds and scooters. In the evening, I wander through the area around
the Opera House, whose architecture was inspired by the Palais Garnier in Paris. Neither
totally yin nor totally yang, Hanoi reflects the wonderful alchemy of Asian traditions and
Western influences.
Yogyakarta
Encapsulating Java’s vast heritage
of beauty
Renowned for its beautiful countryside and numerous volcanoes, Java was a Dutch colony for many years.
This presence was a major influence on the island’s culture, and gave birth to Indische architecture, a combination
of European style and Indonesian tastes… The Phoenix Hotel in Yogyakarta is without a doubt one of the jewels of
this prestigious heritage. Built in 1918 by a wealthy Chinese merchant named Kwik Djoen Eng, this unique building
has managed to retain many aspects of its past, but also offers guests all the modern comforts you would expect.
Its 144 rooms and suites combine European decor with Asian touches. This clever mix of genres continues into the
Paprika restaurant, where Asian flavours and Indonesian delicacies are served up alongside Western dishes…
to delight your taste buds whatever you prefer.
When it comes to down time, you can choose between slipping into a comfy armchair in the colonial bar
– The 1918’s – with a good book or a relaxing interlude at the hotel’s Spa. The incarnation of a multicultural history,
the Phoenix Hotel in Yogyakarta can guarantee a delightful experience, constantly reinventing itself and inspiring
new memories… as befitting its mythical name.
There are a thousand ways to travel
and just as many ways to say... thank you
The new visual identity unveiled in this guide is a reflection of MGallery’s personality and its aspirations for
the future. And if our collection continues to grow, it is above all thanks to all those travellers in search of new
experiences, who do us the honour of staying at one of our hotels. We would also like to warmly thank all those
who, every day, work towards making MGallery an ever more prestigious and astonishing brand.
