Wearrived a little late due to the M4 being closed. So,when we arrived we had sadly, missed the coffee andintroductions. However, Miss Lewis had phonedahead and a lovely man, who worked for UWE, tookus directly to the Forensic computing course. For Forensic Computing we were set the task ofexamining the computer hard drives of a fictionalstalker, who sent emails to the girl he was stalkingand his partner in crime. We had to work out whothe stalker was. We didn’t realise how much money youcould make in this field! We were also able to talk tocurrent computing students. After this we hadlecture about computing in the university and howthe future will need us!Lunch was one of the highlights of the day – wecould choose from sandwiches, pasta, and nachosand even breakfast! It was in a huge lunch roomwhich made us feel like proper university students. The next course we took part in was HomeNetworking. For this we discovered how to usecommand prompt, which is a command line interfacethat does everything the graphical user interfacedoes, except in code. This was my first timeprogramming and I managedtocommand it to open Google -so I was very pleased! Otherstudents went to the Javaprogramming course and hadfun making a java game whichdrove a car simulation around thescreen. By Maddi Ventour-Page Year 12

English Department NewsBy Miss Cottell, English Enrichment LeaderEarlier in January the English Department were visited byDr Zoe Brennan from the University of the West of Englandto talk on the subject of one of her specialisms: twentiethcenturyAmerican writing.Dr Brennan worked with some Year 12 students on their ASLevel exam text ‘The Great Gatsby’. This was a greatcompliment to our students as she usually conducted herstandard seminar for a second year degree course. It provideda valuable taste of university study for the class, as well asopportunity to extend their thinking of the novel.Students who took part: Henry McGinty, Ben Ferguson,Will Price, Oli Laband, Amy Dickinson, Brogan Grinstead,Sophia Gibson, Sophie Shields, Sophie Miell, Olivia Hoyle,Maddie Wrench and Laura PaveyLater Dr Brennan worked with two small groups of Year 11students on their GCSE exam novel ‘Of Mice and Men’.Marianne Johns shares her thoughts:In this session we discussed the variety of different themes that arementioned in the novel and how the story is similar to many othertragedies. We also discussed techniques such as parallelism andforeshadowing, which Steinbeck uses throughout the novel. Many earlyevents in the novel give the reader clues as to how the story will turnout. The session was extremely informative and helpful; it helped uspick out different events that play a key part in the story and will helpus create a detailed analysis of the novel in our English Literatureexam in May.Students who took part: John Barnett, Marianne Johns,Hannah Wilson, Ed Kimins-Tonkin, Hannah Close, JoshStanley, Joe Perry, Chloe Kitching, Harriet Thompson,Kayleigh Skittrall, Simon Addicot, Dan Albone, Katie Attwood,Sam Barnes, Rhiannon Black, Rachael Cherry, Meg Gardner,Camilla Gibson, Sarah Greenwood, Robbie Marshall, AlexParsons, Louise Perkins, Adam Pimm, Nathan Smith, EmilyTaylor, Hannah Taylor, James Tyson, Nadine Williams,Katherine Wing, Sophie WoollanWork from the ClassroomThere’s been some excellent original writingbeing produced this half term. Here are twoextracts from some Year 11 students:By Emma Hanlon:All of a sudden sleep came. It was a nervous stranger that refused to embraceme fully, but just enough for me to slip into a dream world. A world which wascloaked in green and in which the ground beneath me lay confident and firm. Thebirds sang out from the blossoming trees and the shrieks of laughter were ripein the air, followed by the pattering of tiny feet. Home is one million miles awayfrom hell. The whistle sounded.I awoke from my rough slumber, in the same stiff and rigid position which I hadkept all night. There was no time to slowly stretch out my limbs and ease theaching that came along side hours of combat and rock mattresses so, just likethe weary bodies around me, I swung out of sleep and my feet landed numb on theuneven, dirt covered floor.By Laura Cussons:A cruel fist to the face of all who trudge through the darkened archways.Invading fences stand stock still, like the lives and dreams of those theyencumber, they will not be broken by bullets, nor bombs, nor artillery of anykind, for they represent much more than just a physical obstacle. They are a symbolic barrier to all the prisoners. A foreign imprisonmentinvading their heads, and torturing the remaining sanity which sits in a smalldelicate box, being shaken and rattled, until one can stand it no more, and in aflash of anger one imagines twisting those boundaries, a crunching sound, as onegrips the bars of those fences with such a motion that the very bones beneathyour skin writhe among the muscle, cracking and shaking, and a groaning andgrinding of metal screech through the ears as the boundaries are torn clearfrom the ground, thrashing stones and pebbles violently outwards and upwards.Like an ocean bursting through the thin walls of repression, to break throughthe walls, to escape, to be at one with freedom is what the mind strives andlongingly depends upon...But the fences still stand, as strong as ever.Maths Department FormulaeBy Mr Carey, Subject Leader for MathsFollowing a busy term of Enrichmentactivities in the Maths Department beforeChristmas, our attention now turns to theGCSE and ‘A’ Level exams. French AS/A2 students havealso been fortunate to attend student one day conferencesconducted entirely in the French language and at the time ofwriting embarked on a further trip to Paris. How can we measure the motivation of students..?Perhaps being prepared to be at school at 7.00am on a mistyNovember morning is quite a reliable indicator….or perhapscongratulations should go rather to the supportive parentswho chivvied and ferried them!It was a real delight for MmeDonovan and Mme Davies toaccompany our A2 students tothis excellent study day inBirmingham. As always the daywas conducted entirely in Frenchby two native speakers, Richard andRegis and with a greater range ofdiverse activities than ever before the studentsand their teachers were kept fully occupied and alertthroughout the day. Here are the students’ thoughts on theday’s activities:We were woken from the long bus journey and early start by the first talk ofthe day; “Un monde de plus en plus inégal?” “Is the world becoming moreand more unequal?” In undiluted French we learnt about the extremepoverty most of the world faces, the problems of famine and le SIDA(AIDS) which continues to threaten much of the third world. The talk alsolooked at how much was being done to solve these problems and ended byasking how the financial crisis will affect inequality in richer countries.Eleanor GallNext a debate between our entertaining hosts Regis and Richard, aboutwhether access to healthcare in France should be free. We had to listen forkey phrases about how to debate, which will become extremely useful as weapproach our speaking exams. David SearleBefore lunch we had some exercises to do involving French advertisements. The most confusing was a bunch of talking tomatoes trying to sell insurance,a concept I found hard to grasp. Hopefully I will be able to make use of thevocabulary in my essay exam….!
