String Fling Gala<br />

The theme was “Joie de Vivre!” And what better way to celebrate life than with a party of puppets? Savannah<br />

College of Art and Design (SCAD) hosted the <strong>Center</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Puppetry</strong> <strong>Arts</strong>’ String Fling Gala 2005 on September<br />

17. More than 350 people attended and over $185,000 was raised, making it the largest and most financially<br />

successful String Fling yet!<br />

per<strong>for</strong>med at String Fling by the<br />

National Marionette Theatre<br />

Guests enjoyed a sparkling evening of Parisian<br />

cocktails, French cuisine and Tableau Vivants<br />

(live period paintings), per<strong>for</strong>med by SCAD<br />

students. <strong>Da</strong>vid Syrotiak and his son, Peter,<br />

of Vermont’s National Marionette Theatre<br />

delighted the crowd with a per<strong>for</strong>mance of their<br />

whimsical production, Toy Shop. Throughout the<br />

night, party-goers bid on an array of spectacular<br />

silent auction items. The fun continued with a<br />

rousing live auction hosted by special guest<br />

Kelly Stevens of B98.5FM and <strong>Center</strong> board<br />

member Kip Caffey. Guests dueled over such<br />

elaborate packages as an Air Combat USA<br />

training experience; a drive around the BMW<br />

Per<strong>for</strong>mance <strong>Center</strong> racetrack in Greenville,<br />

South Carolina; and a specially catered dinner<br />

provided by Mark Killiron of Dining In. Belinda<br />

Reed was the lucky recipient of a one-of-a-kind<br />

piece of jewelry specially designed and donated<br />

by Knox Jewelers.<br />

Sally Schilling Seeds and Elaine Rogers Walsh<br />

co-chaired the gala in honor of the late Mr.<br />

and Mrs. John A. Conant, who were generous<br />

contributors to the <strong>Center</strong> and prominent<br />

philanthropists in the Atlanta community.<br />
