Press Highlights The Center continued to receive great press coverage for all activities! This year we continued to enjoy the help of Manning Selvage & Lee and together garnered 152 media placements, including print coverage in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and accessAtlanta, Creative Loafing, Northside Neighbor, The Story and others, as well as coverage on TV stations WAGA Fox 5 and CNN. Notable coverage included: 20 • The 2005-06 premier of Bobby Box’s Anne Frank: Within & Without garnered press coverage from around the world. From local publications like The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta Jewish Life and Creative Loafing to international publications like The New York Times, Tal Aviv’s Haaretz and Puppetry International to broadcast TV stations like CNN and ABC, Box’s stirring adaptation received universal acclaim. • Theatre critic Wendell Brock reviewed the second run of Avanti, Da Vinci!, citing it as “a bawdy, brainy joy ride that hits the highs and lows of Western culture over these last 500 years.” (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, June 24, 2005) • The Sunday Paper reviewed Avanti, Da Vinci! saying the show, “proves an engrossing spectacle, elaborately and beautifully staged.” (June 26 – July 2, 2005). • accessAtlanta’s theater writer, Bret Love, took a look at the Center’s new Halloween show, Something Wicked, calling it “an inventive mix of puppetry, poetry, performance art, film and music.” • Theatre critic Wendell Brock reviewed The House at Pooh Corner, calling it “sweet than hunny.” Brock also stated, “It’s a testament to director Bobby Box’s delightful show that these characters have the hug appeal of plush animals and the comedic assurance of seasoned vaudevillians.” (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, September 30, 2005) • The Atlanta Journal-Constitution put the Center on the cover of the Living section when it covered the effect of higher gas prices on popular field trip destinations (October 17, 2005). • Head Puppeteer Julie Dansby was profiled in Creative Loafing’s Behind the Scenes section where she and other puppeteers were deemed “Atlanta’s hardest working performers.” (November 3 – November 9, 2005) • Jon Ludwig’s production of Rainforest Adventures was listed in Points North magazine as one of 5 “must do” things in April 2006. String Fling Gala 2005 The theme was “Joie de Vivre!” And what better way to celebrate life than with a party of puppets? Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) hosted the Center for Puppetry Arts’ String Fling Gala 2005 on September 17. More than 350 people attended and over $185,000 was raised, making it the largest and most financially successful String Fling yet! Puppet from Toy Shop, performed at String Fling by the National Marionette Theatre Guests enjoyed a sparkling evening of Parisian cocktails, French cuisine and Tableau Vivants (live period paintings), performed by SCAD students. David Syrotiak and his son, Peter, of Vermont’s National Marionette Theatre delighted the crowd with a performance of their whimsical production, Toy Shop. Throughout the night, party-goers bid on an array of spectacular silent auction items. The fun continued with a rousing live auction hosted by special guest Kelly Stevens of B98.5FM and Center board member Kip Caffey. Guests dueled over such elaborate packages as an Air Combat USA training experience; a drive around the BMW Performance Center racetrack in Greenville, South Carolina; and a specially catered dinner provided by Mark Killiron of Dining In. Belinda Reed was the lucky recipient of a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry specially designed and donated by Knox Jewelers. Sally Schilling Seeds and Elaine Rogers Walsh co-chaired the gala in honor of the late Mr. and Mrs. John A. Conant, who were generous contributors to the Center and prominent philanthropists in the Atlanta community. 21
