10 presents The Salzburg Marionette tHEATRE Following sold-out shows in 2001 and 2004, the world-renowned Salzburg Marionette Theatre of Salzburg, Austria returned to the Center for Puppetry Arts. A Midsummer Night’s Dream Play by William Shakespeare Performed by the Salzburg Marionette Theatre Saturday, November 19, 2005 Audiences followed Robin Goodfellow as he meddled in this tale about the suffering and hilarity caused by the quest for true love, whether young, mystical or bestial! Shakespeare’s witty dialogue, performed by members of London’s Central School of Speech and Drama, and Mendelssohn’s glorious overture created a spellbinding production that would make the Bard proud. Mainstage Theater. Ages 12 and up. Hansel and Gretel Opera by Englebert Humperdinck Performed by the Salzburg Marionette Theatre Sunday, November 20, 2005 Hansel and Gretel, a story about a destitute family, an evil witch and resourceful children speaks to the importance of familial love. Performed in English by the Inboccallupo Orchestra and Chorus. Mainstage Theater. Ages 12 and up. Scene from Hansel and Gretel Don Giovanni Opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Performed by the Salzburg Marionette Theatre Sunday, November 20, 2005 Mozart’s 1787 masterpiece was deftly recreated as exquisitely crafted marionettes cavorted, crooned and fought before extravagant scenery. Performed in Italian by the Viennese Opera with the Viennese Choir and the Viennese Philharmonics. Mainstage Theater. Ages 12 and up. Salzburg Marionette Theatre Backstage Tour Presented by Gretl Aicher, Artistic Director of the Salzburg Marionette Theatre Saturday, November 19, 2005 Gretl Aicher, Artistic Director and granddaughter of the founder of the Salzburg Marionettes, led a backstage tour of the company’s traveling show. Mainstage Theater. Ages 16 and up.
Education Adult Education Classes Backstage Tour of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Presented by State Puppet Theatre Stara Zagora of Bulgaria Thursday, June 23, 2005 Participants learned about the creation of this unique performance and the training process one goes through to become a puppeteer, director or scenic designer in a professional Bulgarian puppet theater. Puppetry: A World History Lecture and Book Signing Presented by Eileen Blumenthal of New York, NY Tuesday, August 9, 2005 Eileen Blumenthal, Professor of Theatre Arts at Rutgers University, discussed her new book, which is a cross-cultural overview of the art of puppetry. Participants learned about the history of puppetry - from ancient articulated figures to abstract and loony puppets of the contemporary era. Using Puppets on an Actor’s Stage Taught by Clint Thornton of the Center for Puppetry Arts Wednesday, August 17, 2005 This unique class examined the integration of puppets into the “actor’s theater.” Topics included what type of puppetry best suits the production you’re working on and how to work with actors and puppets together, among other things. Sponge-ees Polyfoam Hand Puppet Building Workshop Taught by David Stephens of All-Hands Productions, Atlanta, GA Thursday, September 8, 2005 Stephens taught students how to make a basic Polyfoam puppet using the Sponge-ee method, developed by Bruce Chesse and Beverly Armstrong for their book, Puppets from Polyfoam: Sponge-ees. A History of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Presented by Bob Grippo and Christopher Hoskins of New York, NY Friday, November 4, 2005 Grippo and Hoskins presented a multimedia presentation that examined the role of Tony Sarg as the first designer of the famous parade. Anne Frank: Within & Without Lecture Presented by Andre Kessler of the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust, Atlanta, GA Sunday, January 22, 2006 Holocaust survivor Andre Kessler told his inspirational story and powerful message about standing up for what is right, regardless of the cost. Simple Sock Marionette Construction Workshop Taught by Alan Louis of the Center for Puppetry Arts Thursday, April 20, 2006 Participants constructed a soft sculpture marionette from readily available materials, such as socks, fabric and paint paddles. The Art of Wayland Flowers: The Luxury of Laughter Presented by Thom Fountain of Los Angeles Tuesday, May 16, 2006 Participants joined puppeteer Thom Fountain for a look at the career of Georgia-born comedian/ puppeteer Wayland Flowers. 11
