2005 - 2006 ANNUAL REPORT
CENTER FOR PUPPETRY ARTS

Dear Friends and Supporters,
The 2005-06 season proved to be very busy! We presented 751 performances of nine family
productions and 50 performances of eight New Directions Series (teen & adult) productions.
Education instructors taught over 650 workshops, and museum staff conducted over 250
tours.
The theme for the 2005 String Fling Gala was “Joie de Vivre!” and what better way to celebrate
life than with a party of puppets? Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) hosted the
annual fundraiser on September 17, 2005. More than 350 people attended and over $185,000
was raised, making it the largest and most financially successful String Fling yet!
Also in September, the Center’s permanent museum, PUPPETS: The Power of Wonder was
recognized by MSN.com as one of the top ten children’s museums in the country.
In November, Austria’s Salzburg Marionette Theatre returned to the Center following
sold-out performances in 2001 and 2004. This year, they performed three masterpieces:
A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hansel and Gretel and Don Giovanni. The theatre continued to awe
audiences with its exquisite string puppets, opulent scenery, wondrous arias and old-world
charm.
Anne Frank: Within & Without by Associate Producer Bobby Box had its world premiere at
the Center in January 2006. Presented in cooperation with the Georgia Commission on the
Holocaust and the Anne Frank in the World: 1929-1945 exhibit, under the auspices of the Anne
Frank Center USA. Photos and text courtesy of the Anne Frank Center, USA-New York;
the Anne Frank House - Amsterdam; and the Anne Frank - Fonds, Basel. The show garnered
critical acclaim from publications around the world. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution cited it
as “poignant, personal and historical” and praised Box for his use of the elegant language of
puppetry to illustrate one of the best-known stories of the Holocaust. The New York Times,
Tel Aviv’s Haaretz, CNN and ABC were among some of the other international news outlets
to cover Box’s new perspective of the war-time memoir.
In April 2006, the Center was awarded a prestigious museum planning grant from
the National Endowment for the Humanities. We are excited to begin researching the
numerous possibilities for redesigning or rebuilding our permanent museum space. This
generous grant is enabling the Center to plan the country’s premier puppetry museum.
We gratefully acknowledge the individuals, corporations, foundations and government
organizations who supported us this season. This support allows us to maintain an active
Atlanta treasure – one that the whole community can learn from and enjoy.
I hope you enjoy reading the following report, which covers July 1, 2005 – June 30, 2006.
Sincerely,
Vincent Anthony
About the Center for
Puppetry Arts
The Center for Puppetry Arts is the nation’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to
the art form of puppetry and focuses on three areas: performance, education and museum.
Each year the Center brings quality programming to Atlanta. Three performance series
host a variety of shows geared toward educating as well as entertaining audiences. Patrons
of all ages enjoy the productions in the Family Series and SummerFest. Most productions
meet Georgia QCC Standards, and Study Guides for each Family Series show are available
online for download. More mature audiences appreciate the artistry and humor of the New
Directions Series, which includes the popular Xperimental Puppetry Theater.
In addition to presenting riveting productions, the Center also has two museum spaces and
offers a variety of classes and workshops for adults and children alike. PUPPETS: The Power of
Wonder is an inviting, interactive museum, which provides hands-on educational fun with over
350 puppets from around the world. Additional puppets and objects are on display in our
special exhibit gallery and special exhibits throughout the building.
Create-A-Puppet Workshops, offered in conjunction with Family Series performances,
encourage children to build a puppet of their own that is related to the show. Adults
can learn more about different aspects of puppetry in the Adult Education Series, and the
Distance Learning program reaches people across North America and around the world
with a virtual field trip experience.
All activities presented at the Center are educational; programming meets curriculum
standards in Language Arts, Fine Arts and Character Education, among others.
Serving the whole
community
This is a representative list of community organizations which received complimentary admissions to Center for
Puppetry Arts programs in the 2005-06 season. These admissions enabled children and adults served by these
organizations (all of whom had financial limitations or physical or mental challenges) to participate in Center
programming free of charge.
The Center’s commitment to community accessibility is significant. The Center had 288,543 admissions to its
ticketed programs (performance, education, and museum) in 05-06, with tens of thousands of additional children
and adults viewing the Center’s free, unticketed museum exhibits located in off-site venues throughout Atlanta.
The Center was able to secure enough funding from private and public sources in 05-06 to provide 44,204
complimentary and 180,552 reduced-price admissions to ticketed programs. These free and reduced-price
admissions enabled children from all economic backgrounds to benefit from Center programs.
Recipient of the 2006 Teacher’s Choice Award for
Best Content Provider - Fine Arts Museum.
The Center’s unique Distance Learning Program, a dynamic, interactive virtual field trip experience, continues
to present arts infused programming to participants across North America and the world. During the 2005-06
season, the studio presented 640 programs on non-traditional and traditional classroom disciplines,
including units on butterflies, spiders, dinosaurs, the rainforest, Native Americans, Africa and more. That’s 129
more programs than last year! PreK - 12 Students participated in learning activities about the topic and created a
working puppet. The Center’s Distance Learning Program gained a new audience this year. Seniors at Robin Run
Village Retirement Center engaged in an interactive dialogue on puppetry in other cultures while viewing video
clips and puppets from Japan, China and Mali. Their evaluation of the program was “outstanding!”
Since 1998, the Distance Learning Program has reached primarily rural and underserved audiences that are
unable to access the Center’s hands-on educational programs.
Museum
The Center’s museum and special exhibits present puppets from various time periods and countries around
the world. Exhibitions of puppets are considered essential to enhance understanding and appreciation of
performances and workshops. The Center also encourages visitors to find a treasure in our collection that
correlates with the current family show.
PUPPETS: The Power of Wonder
The Center’s permanent exhibit, PUPPETS: The Power of Wonder, is a hands-on museum displaying more than 350
puppets from various time periods and countries around the world. Self-guided and docent-led tours reinforce
the breadth and scope of puppetry through the ages. Curated by Dr. Michael Malkin, Professor of Theatre,
California Polytechnic State University.
Special Exhibits
In addition to the permanent exhibit, the Center presented several special exhibits throughout the building
during the 2005-06 season.
PUPPETRY IN FOCUS: Treasures from our Global Collection
Puppetry fulfills a vital role in communities around the world. This exhibit, drawing from recent acquisitions
and never-before-seen pieces in the Center’s permanent collection, highlighted those roles. The more than
40 puppets on display included puppets from countries as diverse as Mali, Egypt, India, Japan, Russia, Indonesia,
Mexico, the Czech Republic and others. Co-curated by Susan Kinney and Bradford Clark.
1996 REVISITED: Puppets of Olympic Proportions
Atlanta was proud to host the Centennial Olympic Games in 1996. Izzy, the Centennial Olympic mascot, returned
for a visit along with Peter Minshall’s statuesque Belle and Gent, who danced at the Opening Ceremonies.
Olympics pin and memorabilia were also on display.
POSTERS INTERNATIONAL: A Puppet Perspective
Uniting diverse images from around the globe, this on-going exhibit includes a wide array of cartoonish, romantic,
subtle and daring posters. Each of these placards, which advertise productions and festivals from UNIMA (Union
Internationale de la Marionnette) Centers, reflects the unique culture of the countries they represent – from the
Czech Republic to Italy to Argentina.
KINGS OF BROADWAY
This exhibit featured two of the mask prototypes from the Broadway smash hit, The Lion King, for the lion
brothers themselves, Mufasa and Scar. Donated by Julie Taymor.
The Secret Annex Behind the Bookcase: The Anne Frank Secret Hiding Place
This exhibit was part of the larger exhibit, Anne Frank in the World, located at Kennesaw State University. It was on
loan as part of the Center’s world premiere of Anne Frank: Within & Without, which ran from January 19-29, 2006,
and was presented in cooperation with the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust.
Off-site Exhibits
Along with the exhibits on-site at the Center, puppets from the museum collection are on display in several
locations throughout the city.
Atlantix, Underground Atlanta
Underground Atlanta, a historic retail and entertainment center downtown, is also home to AtlanTix, a half-price
ticket booth run by the Atlanta Coalition of Performing Arts. Visitors to Underground and the booth can view
several of the Center’s puppets, including Don Quixote, his sword and horse, and a Gent from the Opening
Ceremonies of the 1996 Olympics.
WSB-TV, Atlanta
On September 29, 1948, WSB-TV went on the air. Among the programs viewers watched that night was a
children’s television show, Woody Willow & Friends, with marionettes manipulated by Don and Ruth Gilpin. In
1983, the Gilpins donated puppets and memorabilia from the show to the Center’s permanent collection. Today,
some of those puppets, including a dapper Fox, are on display at the station.
Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Atlanta
Weary travelers entering or exiting the airport can view several cases of puppets from the Center’s permanent
collection, representing several countries including Indonesia, China, Germany and Turkey.
Library
The Center’s Research Library is full of resources on the art of puppetry, including books and videos from
around the world – many of which are not carried at regular libraries. Although some patrons just browse or
watch a video for fun, the majority of patrons use the library for specific research.
For instance, one high school student did research for a homework project on Chinese shadow puppets, while
another studied Japanese Bunraku. Professors used the library to work on lesson plans. Aspiring puppeteers
used the library to learn more about the craft.
Season Highlights
Center’s Museum Makes MSN.com Top Ten List
In September 2005, the Center announced that MSN.com had recognized its permanent museum, PUPPETS: The
Power of Wonder, as one of the top ten children’s museums in the country. PUPPETS: The Power of Wonder also
made the list in 2002.
As part of MSN.com, Citysearch.com and its team of freelancers selected the best children’s museums in the
top 25 U.S. markets. This list was then voted on by a group of Citysearch.com editors and narrowed down to
10 museums.
The Center was thrilled to be recognized again by MSN.com. The museum was designed to be an interactive
museum that would engage children of all ages. Clearly, the editors of Citysearch.com were engaged as well.
PUPPETS: The Power of Wonder opened to the public on September 5, 1995 and was designed by Roy Frangiamore
of Atlanta’s Frangiamore Architects, Inc. Featuring more than 350 ancient and contemporary puppets from
around the globe, PUPPETS: The Power of Wonder is recognized as the premiere puppetry museum in the country.
The diversity is vast, from Indonesian shadow puppets to hand-held pre-Columbian clay figures. Modern day
highlights include a Skeksis from Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal, Muppets Link Hogthrob and Dr. Strangepork,
Wayland Flower’s Madame and Michael Curry’s animatronic Trashcan Phoenix. Throughout the space there are
doors to open, levers to pull, buttons to push and puppets to manipulate.
Seed Grant Awarded to Bobby Box comes to Fruition with the debut of
Anne Frank Within & Without
Associate Producer Bobby Box was awarded two grants by the Jim Henson Foundation to support the
development and then production of Anne Frank: Within & Without, created in cooperation with the Georgia
Commission on the Holocaust and the Anne Frank in the World:1929-1945 exhibit, under the auspices of the Anne
Frank Center USA.
In January 2006, Anne Frank: Within & Without had its world premiere at the Center. Box created a celebratory
piece that was not just about death, war or “that poor little girl,” but rather acted as a meditation on hope and
all that is good in humankind.
The show garnered local and international praise and was featured on CNN and ABC News. The New York Times
commented that Box’s use of puppets brought “new depth and perspective to the war-time memoir.”
