C -algebras associated with the ax C b-semigroupover NJoachim Cuntz 1 IntroductionIn this note we present a C -algebra (denoted by Q N ) which is associated to the axCbsemigroupover N. It is in fact a natural quotient of the C -algebra associated withthis semigroup by some additional relations (which make it simple and purely infinite). These relations are satisfied in representations related to number theory. The studyof this algebra is motivated by the construction of Bost–Connes in [1]. Our C -algebracontains the algebra considered by Bost–Connes, but in addition a generatorcorresponding to translation by the additive group Z.As a C -algebra, Q N has an interesting structure. It is a crossed product of theBunce–Deddens algebra associated to Q by the action of the multiplicative semigroupN . It has a unique canonical KMS-state. We also determine its K-theory, whosegenerators turn out to be determined by prime numbers. On the other hand, Q N can also be obtained as a crossed product of the commutativealgebra of continuous functions on the completion OZ by the natural action of the axCbsemigroupover N. More interestingly, its stabilization is isomorphic to the crossedproduct of the algebra C 0 .A f / of continuous functions on the space of finite adeles bythe natural action of the ax C b-group P C Qover Q. Somewhat surprisingly one obtainsexactly the same C -algebra Q N (up to stabilization) working with the completion Rof Q at the infinite place and taking the crossed product by the natural action of theax C b-group P C Q on C 0.R/.In the last section we consider the analogous construction of a C -algebra replacingthe multiplicative semigroup N by Z , i.e., omitting the condition of positivity on themultiplicative part of the ax C b-(semi)group. We obtain a purely infinite C -algebraQ Z which can be written as a crossed product of Q N by Z=2. The fixed point algebrafor its canonical one-parameter group . t / is a dihedral group analogue of the Bunce–Deddens algebra. Its K-theory involves a shift of parity from K 0 to K 1 and vice versa. Its stabilization is isomorphic to the natural crossed product C 0 .A f / Ì P Q .2 A canonical representation of the ax C b-semigroupWe denote by N the set of natural numbers including 0. N will normally be regardedas a semigroup with addition. Research supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.
