The Thome Human Element – BackgroundTHOME’S HUMAN ELEMENT – A CULTURE-BUILDING MODEL was conceptualized in2010 and embodies a holistic approach to business excellence through people. Its a fundamental mindset change concerning how we manage human resourceswithin the Thome Group of Companies.CultureOperationalatmosphereCommunicationHuman behavior is fundamentally at the center of most if not all business disasters, andconversely it’s also the single biggest contributor to business success. We therefore believe thesecret to success lays in how we manage attitudes in order to the manage risks.IndividualTeamSituationalawarenessDecisionSafety/EfficiencyProceduresStress/WorkloadSleep/FatigueMaritime Crew Resource Management (MCRM) is an essential part of the Thome Human Element Program and thistraining program was developed in 2011 in cooperation with Blaa Mediamentor, who has been developing safetymeasures for the shipping and Off-shore industry with the expertise of assigned psychologists and airline pilots. The MCRM program aims to create a company culture, which can bridge the gaps between shore and ships, businessgroups, nationalities and religions. A culture that is strongly rooted in the principles of good MCRM, which will create acommon way of doing things and ensure that safety gets imbedded in everything that we do.The training program involves all shore and seagoing staff at all levels, and it includes shore based workshops as well asonboard CBT.22
The Thome Human Element - InitiativesThe company’s on-going initiatives under the Thome Human Element program include some ofthe following:• Maritime Crew Resource Management for all staff onboard and ashore• Global Cadet program for catering, electrical, deck and engine Cadets• Shore-based assignments for senior officers on rotation basis• Leadership and Cultural Awareness training for shore staff• Family day to foster closer relationships between staff• Annual Officer’s Conference in 7 different countries• Health awareness campaign ashore and onboard• Thome Competence Management system• E-learning for Technical Superintendents• Management trainee program• Thome E-appraisal system• Thome Group News• Thome Safety day• Onboard trainers• CBT Seagull23
