In the ND5 gene of squirrel monkey, three bases corresponding to one amino<br />

acid have been deleted (figs. 1, 2). The deletion occurred at the second codon of the<br />

gene. The 5’-terminal regions of the ND5 gene in starfish (Himeno et al. 1987) <strong>and</strong><br />

sea urchin ( Cantatore et al. 1987 ) are -70 bases longer <strong>and</strong> the same region of Dro-
