Tunneled Direct Link Setup - Overview• Tunneled Direct Link Setup (TDLS) enables devices in a network toautomatically set up a secure direct link, without user intervention, whilemaintaining the connection with the network– the network can be a BSS or a Wi-Fi Direct network– the TDLS direct link is secure if the network is secure– TDLS enables dynamic direct connections between devices in a network• Based upon IEEE 802.11z specification, TDLS is characterized by the use ofsignaling frames that are encapsulated in data frames that can be transmittedthrough the AP transparently. Hence two or more Wi-Fi TDLS stations can setup direct links providing, in many scenarios, an improved user experience withrespect to speed of connection and overall bandwidth efficiency– The processes used in TDLS are:• Discovery• Setup• Teardown• TDLS Peer U-APSD (Power Save)• Channel SwitchConfidential | © Wi-Fi AllianceWi-Fi Alliance Member Symposium 74TDLS - Benefits• TDLS eliminates the hop through the AP or GO*• the resulting increase in throughput can be very large, especially when thedevices are close apart or when a wider channel can be used in an empty band– the latency reduction will also be significant, because the queuing delay at the AP iseliminated• TDLS link set up is automatic and without user intervention– the devices already have a secure connection with the AP/GO, which is used to set up asecure TDLS direct link– the user does not need to enter a separate passphrase for every direct link in thenetwork* Defined in P2PConfidential | © Wi-Fi AllianceWi-Fi Alliance Member Symposium75

TDLS - Benefits• Concurrent access between the AP/GO and the direct link is implicit with TDLS• TDLS supports dynamic channel switching– direct links can be dynamically switched from a congested channel in the 2.4 GHz bandto an empty wideband channel in the 5 GHz band– the throughput is increased even more, while traffic is offloaded from the base network• TDLS supports power save to reduce power consumption• TDLS is not limited by the capabilities of the base network– An 80 MHz 11ac direct link can be set up in an 11a BSSConfidential | © Wi-Fi AllianceWi-Fi Alliance Member Symposium 76TDLS Use CasesRapid Synch betweenSmart Phone Device and Home PCNotes:1. VHT5G changes to Direct (P2P)• Social Channel– In the P2P technical specification, “Channels 1, 6, and 11 in the 2.4 GHz band shall beused as the Social Channels.” However, VHT5G only provides connectivity in the 5 GHzband.– But VHT5G devices will need to support 2.4 GHz to connect to most existing hot spotsand most of the devices they already own.– Therefore, the proposal is to keep the WFD social channel at 2.4 GHz and VHT5Gproducts desiring WFD certification are required to be dual band.Confidential | © Wi-Fi AllianceWi-Fi Alliance Member Symposium 168VHT5G changes to Direct (P2P)• Operating Channel attribute format• In 802.11REVmb the Operating Class, and Channel Number, provide all the informationnecessary to identify the frequency band, channel bandwidth, and the 20 MHz primarychannel. However in 802.11ac Draft 1.4 the Operating Class indicates frequency bandand channel bandwidth, and Channel Number indicates the channel center frequencyindex. The indication of the primary channel is no longer part of the Operating Class.• The P2P technical specification needs to be modified to provide primary channelinformation for VHT5G devices. One possible solution is to state that for VHT5G theChannel Number in the Operating Channel attribute indicates the primary 20 MHzchannel. Group formation would occur with this primary channel with a bandwidthindicated by the Operating class. All additional information would be conveyed in theinformation elements in the beacon in the primary channel.Confidential | © Wi-Fi AllianceWi-Fi Alliance Member Symposium 169
