Wa l k i n g t h e p a t h t o e m p a t h y !Thank you for providing excellent care to friends and families in our community.Occasionally it is important to review how our compassionate care instills trustand confidence in our hospital. Now let’s focus on Empathy. Empathy—-Walkin another’s SHOES to understand the feelings and emotions that a patient orstaff member may be feeling. The sense of understanding is how we showempathy and concern toward ourpatients and co-workers. The sense ofunderstanding and empathy reducesanxiety, usually leads to increasedcompliance and a more positive patientor co-worker experience. Often times, empathy creates a bond among yourpatients or co-workers. Make theS.H.O.E.S. fit! S.H.O.E.S.—an acronym: Stressed, Hesitant,Overwhelmed, Eager and or Scared. Over the years, the significance of empathy inhealthcare has seemed to become lost due to the advances in medical technology. Modern medical tools andprocedures have often replaced the compassion and emotion needed to share concerns for the procedure orailment. As we observe the Stressed-Stop make the person not the task the priority. If they are Hesitant-Hear what the patient or co-worker is saying; If they are Overwhelmed-Open your heart and try to imaginebeing in their position; If they are Eager-Express your understanding of their concerns, fears & hopes; If theyScared-Support by offering encouragement and specific assistance if possible. Healthcare workers from hundredsof years ago relied on empathy as an important component of the healing process and this remains extremelyimportant to that process today. So grab your shoes and walk the path of empathy!S.T.A.R. News just for you!S.T.A.R. News is a publication designed with our employees in mind. Beinginformed is key to success.
