Filmmaking/DirectingThe subject area ofFilmmaking/Directing lays thegroundwork for a career as a scriptwriter or director. The main goal istherefore teaching the students aboutthe demands and possibilities of thescene-fictional film, as well as documentaryfilms and aspects of animationfilms, and to give them agrounded, broad, practical educationin narration, dramaturgy, film scriptdevelopment and film realisation.The role of design in dealing withcamera, light, sound and editing, isjust as important in our studyprogrammes as dramaturgy, filmscript writing, directing, film technology,computer animation, photographyetc.. Through the variety andpractical relevance of their education,students are pointed towards thedemands they will face in their futurecareers. The combination of impartingtheoretical knowledge andpractical application of this duringindividual film projects is the idealpreparation for day-to-day professionallife in the film industry.Knowledge acquired during thecourse of studies is deepened throughnumerous practical, realistic exercisesand implemented in film processesand projects. This takes place in bothindividual and group projects.For the implementation of their filmprojects, extensive equipment is madeavailable to students studying Filmmaking/Directing- includinglighting, grip, cameras andprofessional editing suites.This broad course of studies makes itpossible for graduates in the disciplineof Filmmaking/Directing to workin other areas of the film and TVindustry after graduation, forexample production, productionmanagement, recording management,set management and more. Theyestablish a basis which will allow asmooth progression into theprofessional world.The discipline of Filmmaking/Directing is co-ordinated by tutorswith a wide range of practicalexperience, whose successful work forwell-known national and internationalproductions is mirrored in therecognition they achieve from variousfilm prizes, including the AdolfGrimme Prize, the most well-renownedtelevision prize in Germany.The length of the course of studies iseight semesters. After two years, thereis an intermediary examination. Thiscourse of studies may be started eachyear at the beginning of the wintersemester, in October. Some studentsmay be accepted and even beginstudying each year in the summersemester, in the case of sufficient anddemonstrable prior knowledge. Pleaseget in touch with us about this.The application for Filmmaking/Directing should include thefollowing:• At least two written shortstories,each of between three and ten pages• 2 photostories with a maximum of16 photos, telling a scenic Story.• Alternatively samples of filmingwork can also be submitted, if any (aself-made short film or video clip).Each application, and thereforeacceptance to this subject area, isassessed on the basis of the creativeapproach of the samples of worksubmitted, rather than on perfecttechnical implementation.Film set on the grounds of theRuhrakademie "The Inheritance",photographed by Evelyn Kwasny
