Successes and AwardsExtracts from our news in thepast years:• Red dot award 2009 for outstandingCommunication Designreceived by the former Ruhrakademiestudent, Raffael Stü̈ken.Thematerial created for the Colognebasedstart-up "dua" was recognisedwith the award. Raffael Stükenbecamea tutor in Computer Graphics(DTP) shortly after his degree. Thedesigner, who works in Cologne, wasawarded with the InternationalDesign Prize at a celebratory event atthe Zeche Zollverein, part of theWorld Cultural Heritage Site inEssen.• It can't get any better: Just a monthafter giving a coherent and emotionaldiploma presentation at the Ruhrakademie,Justyna Haronsky andJacqueline Scheibel, the designerswho are "distinguished" in bothsenses of the word, were honouredwith the "iF communication designaward 2008".• After selection by a distinguishedjury, Michail Pirgelis - Ruhrakademiegraduate and current master's apprenticeof Rosemarie Trockel - wasawarded a Villa-Romana Scholarshipin 2007 in Florence. This, the oldestGerman art prize, comes with amonthly cash grant as well as theprinting of his works during period.Former scholarship holders includeMax Beckmann, Käthe Kollwitz andErnst Barlach.• In 2006, Elisa Dietrich made it to1st place in the German Youth PhotoPrize for her collection of photos,“Valeska”. This work was mentionedin several newspapers (e.g. in the“Frankfurter Allgemeine”) as well asseveral times on television.• The graduate, Angelos Gavrias, wasdistinguished in New York with theinternationally acclaimed GoldenLight Award 2006 in the category ofDocumentary Photography/Photojournalism.• Benedict Drolshagen, Jacek Kubaczynskiand Ingo Russland won firstplace at the international Spotlight-Festival 2011, one of the mostrenowned creative competitions forall types of video communication,and won the Gold award. The festivalhas been taking place annuallysince 1998 and is considered to bethe most important promotional filmfestival in the German-speakingworld.• In 2003, Anna Figger was one ofthe few photographers of thosenominated for the State Prize NRW.With her student colleague, AnneFaltermeier, she was invited to theTZR gallery to the “Paris Photo”exhibition in the Carousel du Louvrein Paris and was able to show herphotos to an international public.The patron of the exhibition was theFrench President Jacques Chirac. Inaddition, the online presence of thegroup was distinguished as a particularlysuccessful example of up-to-dateWeb design.• With his nomination for a CanonProfiFoto Development Prize, thestudent Thomas Joneikis was able toachieve success on a national andinternational level in the field ofPhoto Design. His style impressed atthe initial judging by the expert committee,which was appointed by theorganiser Canon and the professionalmagazine ProfilFoto. The winners arepermitted to market their work viathe international agency Corbis andin the edition gallery Lumas. Theicing on the cake is that their workwill be displayed in the PhotokinaVisual Gallery in Cologne.• In 2009, Peymaneh Luckow waspresented with two iF communicationdesign awards for her diplomaproject. In this international designcompetition, a 17-person judgingpanel assessed submissions from 24countries. Extracts of the work appearednot only in the iF Yearbook, butwere also extensively published in theJune-August edition of the internationaldesign magazine NOVUMand on Spiegel-Online.• In 2010 too, a graduating studentof the Ruhrakademie was distinguishedwith the iF award: DanielaBrandt created her diploma projecton the topic of the totally normalinsanity of the public spreading ofnews. The national professionalpublication, Page, reports about thisoutstanding work in its June 2010edition. The official prize-giving tookplace in Munich as part of a ceremonywhich included a gathering ofprominent designers.• Mirco Kurth received the covetedNRW Design Prize for his professionalmagazine for Corporate Design“Co & Co”. The Design Prize NRWis awarded by the economics ministryand given out by the DesignCentre North Rhine Westphalia. Thedistinguished work was displayed inthe red dot design museum in Essen.• In 2003 Christiane Scheidt wasselected for the Canon ProFashionalPhoto award (Best Fashion Book,Germany). In 2006, this prize (BestSelectedWorks) was given to threestudents of the Ruhrakademie: DennisZimmermann, Pierre Mandouxand Christoph Wilde.• “Best of the best” is the mostacclaimed award, along with the "reddot award 2010". The high-rankinghonour was received by the Ruhrakademiegraduate, Johannes Loer, forthe outstanding design of his work“Struwwelpeter/ Document 73”. 15renowned design experts from allover the world made up the jury(including “The Godfather” of typo,Kurt Weidemann).• Dominic Drolshagen won thebiggest German Video Contest, theMcDonald's SMS Video Contest2010. Altogether there were 2600submissions. The Ruhrakademie filmstudent and his team not only wonfirst prize, but also an Audi Cabrioletwith a value of EUR 35,000.• Antje Höfer received the KodakTalent Sponsorship Prize in 2003. In2006, she celebrated winning theEpson Art Photo Award (Best SelectedWorks). Her work was shown atArt Cologne.• Even two of the renowned KodakTalent Sponsorship Prizes were givento students in December 2005. Withthe success of Evelyn Kwasny andCornelius Popovici, the Ruhrakademieconfirmed their status as one ofthe best private schools in NorthRhine Westphalia.• Graduates of the Ruhrakademiereceive founders' prize. The formerstudents of the Ruhrakademie in thefield of Computer Animation, TorbenJahn and Christoph Wasser, wereawarded the founders' prize for theUnna area. Under the leadership ofour past colleague, Thomas Wenk,the company “Hochfarbe” was foundedin Schwerte. Even more DigitalArtist co-workers were trained at theRuhrakademie.• The former Ruhrakademiegraduate, Martin Becker, foundedthe computer animation company,Puppeteers, thus building on theirexisting reputation as one of themost high-profile animation talentdevelopers in NRW. Internationalcompanies such as Coca-Cola areamongst their clients. Numerous graduatesof the Ruhrakademie work atPuppeteers.• Ruhrakademie graduate, MichailPirgelis, was chosen as the BestEmerging Artist 2010 at Art Colognewith the “Audi Art Award for NewPositions”. The prize is worth EUR10,000 and includes an exhibition inthe Cologne Artothek, as well as theprinting of an exhibition catalogue.• Together with the Ludwig Forumfor International Art in Aachen, theRuhrakademie published an extensivecatalogue. The occasion was thespectacular slide-show, Streetlife,which was also shown in othermuseums. This was the first exhibitionby a private academy in theLudwig Forum for International Art.Back in 1986 illustration studentsreceived first and second prize fromthe “Mendener Bauhütte” Art Association.At one competition for theatrepromotional posters inDortmund (“Theaterzwang”), Ruhrakademiestudents received the first,second and third prizes, presented bythe company Grohe (the largestEuropean manufacturer of fittings),for the colour design of their fittings.The student Alice Löhr received theart prize “Salon d'hiver” in Paris.Two students, Ludger Busch andEdgar Ruenholl, were awarded forthe design of their stand at a Colognetrade fair. Public utility companiesin Schwerte prized the design ofpower boxes and transformer stations(directed by Professor Winterhager).Different newspapers and specialistpublications, such as the renowned“Novum - World of GraphicDesign”, reported multiple timesabout the work created by studentsof the Ruhrakademie. The “FrankfurterAllgemeine” published a fullpagereport on the photo series“Valeska”, for which Elisa Dittrichwon first place in the German YouthPhotography competition. Theweekly magazine “Der Spiegel”mentioned the diploma project bythe student Thomas Kirchner as aninnovative strategy of self-promotion.The diploma project ofPeymaneh Luckow, for which shereceived two If Awards, was extensivelyreported on in “Spiegel-Online”.In “MAX” magazine, Eva-RoseHenning's semester project waspublished. The same student gainedattention with her diploma project,which transformed the whole graphicimage of the well-known fashioncompany owned by Britta Steilmannas a part of a real-life project.Further and current successes can befound on the Ruhrakademie website.
