PreambleThe Ruhrakademie is one of theoldest and most successful privateeducational institutes in the fields ofdesign, art, film and media in NRW.The practice-oriented study methodand individual development of skillsprovide an excellent basis for graduates'future professional success. Fromthe outset the Ruhrakademie wasintended to present an alternative tothe often anonymous way of studyingat state universities, and instead committeditself to offering particularlyintensive and personal support. The Ruhrakademie was founded in1985 by Professor JürgenStörr andhis wife, Roswitha Störr. It began verymodestly at the time, developinggradually to become one of the mostsuccessful private centres of educationfor design, art, film and media inGermany. Since then the number ofstudents at the Ruhrakademie hasincreased to nearly 300. The old castlewith its atmospheric surroundingscertainly contributes to a pleasantwork atmosphere.Ruhrakademie qualifications areofficially recognised. These works by Karina Wiedkamp andPaul Wiethoff were created in 1995 forthe occasion of the 10-year anniversaryof the founding of the Ruhrakademie.Originally "Haus Ruhr" was built in1455 by Jan von Boyle, who inheritedthe castle - already heavily fortified -in the Middle Ages. Between the 17thand 19th centuries, the former moatedcastle was developed into the buildingit is today in terms of structureand form. In 1987 Roswitha andJürgenStörr acquired the castle. Since1989 the Ruhrakademie has beenbased in the old castle, which hasbeen renovated extensively for thepurposes of teaching and learning.

Foundation StudiesThe large art studio in the heritage-protectedriding arenaPrinciplesThe course of studies at the Ruhrakademiewas intended from the get-go topresent an alternative to the education inArt and Design at state-universities. Thegoal was to positively create a studyatmosphere which differed from theanonymity of state universities. Furthermore, the education on offer should bemore practice-oriented and targeted tospecific goals. Over the course of time itbecame evident that teaching moderndesign within the context of its purposewas simply not enough. Rather it appearednecessary to promote creativepotential in a targeted way instead, toallow innovative ideas to develop. Thisapplies to the entire range of applied andfine design.Since then, the development of perceptionand training of conceptual thinkingthrough the setting of experimental taskshave become some of the most importantbuilding blocks in the programmeof studies. However, drawing as amedium of communication is also ofcomparably great importance. It isn’t fornothing that the word “design” comesfrom the Italian disegno = drawing.Drawing is the fundamental discipline ofa designer, the tool which helps him todevelop and flesh out his ideas. At thesame time, drawing practice sharpensthe eye for fine differences and aestheticqualities.Nonetheless, the Ruhrakademie availsitself of the most modern computertechnology, in order to meet thedemands which are made of graduates intheir later professional lives. In recentyears, subjects such as Multimedia,Computer Animation or Film and VideoDesign have supplemented and extendedthe range of courses on offer. However,we firmly believe that the fusion of creativeability and open-mindedness is abasic requirement for good design andgives the term “multimedia” - whichmany swear by - a concrete meaning thathas a practical application. This is not a cigarette hole... perception istaught by detailed and accurate depictionof everyday motifs.Innovative design is only there toexpect, where various design disciplinesinfluence each other, thus deepeninga student’s sense for aestheticquality in general. Fundamentaltraining in perception and representationis waiting for each Ruhrakademiestudent from the very beginning oftheir studies, whether they are hopingto graduate in Computer Animation,Communication Design, PhotoDesign, Illustration, Fine Arts orFilmmaking.Drawing to a photographic levelof accuracy is part of the firstsemester teaching material. This is intended to increasesensitivity of perception. Thisdouble page features coloured pencil drawingsare created in the first semester by Anna Maliglowka,Julia Pack and Kerstin Werner.Coloured pencil drawing from thefirst semester student, Daniel Klafke

Communication and Media DesignDesign is composition with a purpose. The term Graphic Design has beenreplaced in recent years by CommunicationDesign. Content is no longerthe sole skilled manual work of agraphic designer, but rather creationand design of visual communicationin the widest range of media. Thismeans that design also has an interpersonaland social dimension. As apart of society, the designer hasco-responsibility for certain processes.Communication Design thus transmitsvalues. This is done in a directand immediate way. Therefore, theRuhrakademie focuses not just on awell-grounded training in design andthe targeted development of creativeabilities - which is of course stillessential for a successful career in thisdiscipline nevertheless - but also putsthe development of individual designers'personalities at the forefront.Experimental typography as an illustrativemeans of expression: Extract from the work"Kommunikaze" by Oliver Hausmann. In "Correspondence" (title ofa work by Britta Nelskamp),it is necessary to seeeverything negatively.A diploma project by Martin Losch,Herbert Schaar and Kay Steinhuseron the theme "Dragons"

"Expedition Luna" is anextract from a series ofillustrations by GunnarLippoldt. The imaginationof an inspiring dream; ifgravity did not exist, thetechnical force of whichshows the real limits of adoubtful existence.

Course of StudiesIn all subject areas, the duration of teachingand learning content at Ruhrakademiespans four years. This time isdivided into semesters. Semesters havecertain periods when teaching takesplace, and periods without officialcontact time. In the periods withoutofficial contact hours, students areexpected to make progress with workin their practical subjects, in whichstudents deepen their theoreticalknowledge and prove this knowledgein an examination or through a presentation. It is of general note that thefirst four semesters are very structured. In the later semesters, students becomeincreasingly responsible for their ownlearning, within the existing framework, and plan their studies in accordancewith their chosen major. For more details concerning the courseof studies in individual subjects, pleasefeel free to contact us directly. We continuouslyadapt the teaching materialin order to match current professionalrequirements, which means that changesmay occur.OrientationAt the start, if you do not knowexactly which subject is right for you,you can try out certain subjectcombinations during the first twosemesters at Ruhrakademie. Right atthe beginning it’s sometimes difficultto say which precise subject areas youwant to develop your own creativeability in.TutorsThe teaching staff at Ruhrakademie(currently over 40 tutors) consists ofself-employed communication designers(agency owners), art directors,film-makers, digital artists, universitylecturers, photo designers, journalistsand freelance artists. The project group of the B-Movie were able to engagerenowned actors such as JoachimH. Luger, known as "FatherBeim" from "Lindenstrasse",and Joe Bausch, known as theCologne pathologist from"Tatort" as voice actors.Computer AnimationFirstly, we need to differentiate betweenthe various possibilities andobjectives. On one hand, there is 2Dcomputer animation with the lookand feel of a classic cartoon, then 3Dcomputer animation with the purposeof a conceptually-grounded aestheticof artificiality and finally 3D computeranimation as the best possible illusionof reality, whereby technicalintervention should not be noticed. It’s again necessary to specify whethercomputer-animated scenes only supporta live-action film or whether theentire film will be comprised of 3Danimation.All animations and cartoons requirethe sensitive integration of sound, music, editing and dramaturgy on thebasis of cinematic storytelling.Still images from a computeranimation, which was aproject from the company Grohe, who are Europe's leadingproducers of bathroom fittings.Christoph Hein created notjust interiors for hisdiploma project, but alsoshowed these in a virtual filmsequence with interactive elements

Filmmaking/DirectingThe subject area ofFilmmaking/Directing lays thegroundwork for a career as a scriptwriter or director. The main goal istherefore teaching the students aboutthe demands and possibilities of thescene-fictional film, as well as documentaryfilms and aspects of animationfilms, and to give them agrounded, broad, practical educationin narration, dramaturgy, film scriptdevelopment and film realisation. The role of design in dealing withcamera, light, sound and editing, isjust as important in our studyprogrammes as dramaturgy, filmscript writing, directing, film technology, computer animation, photographyetc.. Through the variety andpractical relevance of their education, students are pointed towards thedemands they will face in their futurecareers. The combination of impartingtheoretical knowledge andpractical application of this duringindividual film projects is the idealpreparation for day-to-day professionallife in the film industry.Knowledge acquired during thecourse of studies is deepened throughnumerous practical, realistic exercisesand implemented in film processesand projects. This takes place in bothindividual and group projects. For the implementation of their filmprojects, extensive equipment is madeavailable to students studying Filmmaking/Directing- includinglighting, grip, cameras andprofessional editing suites. This broad course of studies makes itpossible for graduates in the disciplineof Filmmaking/Directing to workin other areas of the film and TVindustry after graduation, forexample production, productionmanagement, recording management, set management and more. Theyestablish a basis which will allow asmooth progression into theprofessional world. The discipline of Filmmaking/Directing is co-ordinated by tutorswith a wide range of practicalexperience, whose successful work forwell-known national and internationalproductions is mirrored in therecognition they achieve from variousfilm prizes, including the AdolfGrimme Prize, the most well-renownedtelevision prize in Germany. The length of the course of studies iseight semesters. After two years, thereis an intermediary examination. Thiscourse of studies may be started eachyear at the beginning of the wintersemester, in October. Some studentsmay be accepted and even beginstudying each year in the summersemester, in the case of sufficient anddemonstrable prior knowledge. Pleaseget in touch with us about this. The application for Filmmaking/Directing should include thefollowing:• At least two written shortstories, each of between three and ten pages• 2 photostories with a maximum of16 photos, telling a scenic Story.• Alternatively samples of filmingwork can also be submitted, if any (aself-made short film or video clip). Each application, and thereforeacceptance to this subject area, isassessed on the basis of the creativeapproach of the samples of worksubmitted, rather than on perfecttechnical implementation.Film set on the grounds of theRuhrakademie "The Inheritance",photographed by Evelyn Kwasny

Photo DesignFor the discipline of Photo Design, theRuhrakademie has developed a programmeof studies which prepares studentsfor the changed career of photography.Nowadays a photographer does not onlysupply images or representations ofreality, but also acts as an independentdesigner who is presenting a topicaccording to his own views and in aparticular way. The development of apersonal style of photography, whichenables the photographer to work as anauthor and director of photo journalism,is therefore significant for his professionalsuccess. On the other hand, there arealso concrete design skills, such as layoutand processing techniques, which aphotographer has to master as well.Regarding a technical and aestheticknowledge of photography, this newsubject tries to take both areas intoaccount, in as far as practical skills beingtaught in terms of conception, layoutand digital image processing."Clashed - Young German Photography"is a book of pictures for theexhibition which goes by the samename at the TZR Gallery Bochum, with work produced in class by KurtSchrage. Here we see the intentionalcombination of the apparently contradictorystyles of portrait, fashionand staging.Anna Figger was nominated in2003 for the State of North RhineWestphalia prize.Photography from therenowned series of motifs,"Valeska" by Elisa Dietrich, who accompanied her dyingsister until her death. Forthis series Elisa Dietrichreceived the 2006 GermanYouth Photo Prize.

Study PeriodsThe Ruhrakademie arranges itsteaching according to the semesterdates at state universities or school inNorth Rhine Westphalia. Thesummer semester runs from mid-April to October, which is comparablein terms of timing with thesummer semester at a state university. The winter semester runs frommid-October to April. During periodswhere there is no teaching, the academyis open (for up to 2 weeks), sothat studios and workshops (photolaboratories, computer rooms, studiosetc.) can continue to be used duringthis period. The teaching hours are, apart from a few exceptions: Mondaysto Fridays 9am to 5pm. The programmeof study normally lasts for 4 years.CostsLeft and right: extracts from a final yearproject by Stefanie Paulus: Marketingconcept "Creative Anarchy". StefaniePaulus has been working at Serviceplanin Munich for five years now- belongingto the list of Germany's top tenadvertising agencies.Monthly (12 times a year) tuition feeswhich amount to EUR 345 (or EUR395 for the discipline of Film/Directing).In addition there is a one-offregistration fee of EUR 500. Thereare no further costs for examinationsor certificates. The Ruhrakademieoffers sufficient help with finance, which is equivalent to the nationalnorm, via a bank, in addition to thestate BAföG (grant). Also receivingthe legal state BAföG, which isnonrefundable, is possible.

IllustrationIn the discipline of visual communication, pictures are still produced manuallydespite perfect photo and computertechnology. This programme of study isnot just about art, but also about targetedportrayal through the media of drawing, printing and painting. Thereforethis field of study is ideal for those whoare not only talented at drawing, butalso sensitive enough to be able to tailortheir work to a target audience.Nature studies, figurative drawing, graphictechnology, colour and design theoryare just a few examples of teachingcontent which future illustrators shouldlearn about, in order to take on projectsin the areas of Advertising Designs,Corporate Communication or LiteraryIllustration. In addition, according topersonal preference, there is a free choiceof experimental projects, cartoons orgraphic novels. The border between illustrationand art is fluid. For your application, you definitely do not needfinished illustrations, but rather examplesof your work, such as drawings, which demonstrate your skills andpotential in the field.Judith Loske created a fantastic diplomaproject with her children's book "Sadako´sCranes". (Excerpt) This studentfrom Waltrop chose a real event from theSecond World war for the picture storyshe wrote and illustrated herself. The girl,Sadako, survives the dropping of theatom bomb 'Little Boy' on Hiroshimaand falls ill some time later as a result ofthe radiation. However, Sadako findsout from Japanese legend, according towhich everyone is granted one wish, whohad folded 1000 origami cranes. Sadakostarts to fold the cranes in hospital.....Judith Loske found a publisher at theFrankfurt book fair. The book is nowinternationally published by thepublishers Minedition

Apart from thedevelopment of individual abilitiesand interests, the differences betweenthe variety of visual languages and thenew forms of sculptural work play animportant role. If a later professionaltask is to develop innovative work, your creativity no longer has anyboundaries.
