January 2011RETIRED COLUMN……..JOHN NOSOVITCHJOHN GIORDONELLO ... GIO1736@aol.com ......107 Inverness Court, Myrtle Beach, SC.29588.... Youdon't know me, but I remember you! The first day I went on "Practical Patrol" in the 6th Pct (Roslyn) viaduct, (Iwent on the job on 10/10/1969) They made us wear sports jackets and pin our tin on the breast pocket, (howembarrassing) I walked into the 6th station house and the first thing I remember seeing was your smilingface, You were cordial and didn't treat us like "PROBIES". I was one of the older guy's (24 yrs old) and I hadbeen in the Army for three year's, and I was married. I learned later on that you were involved in the PBAwhich is one reason that I became a delegate,(10 yrs) under the late, great Danny Greenwald, WayneMcMorrow, and Dellaraba, That night, I lucked out and had Bob Steinman as a car man, next was Jimmy Quinn, then Joe Husty, They were great cops in my opinion, anyway, I've been retired for 20 years, Thank's to the PBA,and guy's like you and me too, we enjoy a great medical plan. I couldn't afford my med's! Anyway, I write toyou to say feel better, and get well. We all think of you all the time, and I wanted to tell you personally, you'vealways' been a "COP'S- COP", you make the world a better place!!! Great retiree's column, needless to say! Oh,I forgot to tell you, I spent 4 years in the Third Pct. and 18 years in HPB. I'll close for now, just wanted to say"HI" !!! ps; thanks for not laughing at my "TIN" being pinned on my Jacket.VINCE BAUMER...636 Bay Laurel Lane Fort Worth, Tx.... Dear Betty, This comes from old VinceBaumer up in North Texas and I am writing you because only two days ago I received my NCPD PBANewsletter in the mail, it came in late as usual. I was sorry to read of John's triple by-pass , but also want tothank you for writing such a good retired column. Please give John this get well card from me and my familyhere. {She did -Thanks} I am happy to read that John is doing well and recovering. He is a hero to all of usretired Old Policemen. I attempted to write to him when I'm feeling good and not battling with Arthritis, achesand pains. We are all growing older and there is no -known cure for Arthritis and Cancer. Fortunately manyspecial gains and procedures helped people with heart trouble and with triple by-pass surgery. My problemsare different, very bad legs and not able to walk with out the aid of a walker, is what keeps me away fromdriving, making long trips and also troubled by an over-active bladder. I hate to put down or criticize Doctors, but the Medicos in Paris, Tennessee botched the treatments on me. Please tell John I am praying for hisrecovery every night and always during the day, {Thank You Vince} when I have free time to relax and thinkof the good people like John. He has as you fully know devoted much of his retirement time to keeping theRetired Column going in the PBA Periodical. May God Bless both you and John with happiness and a long lifeof love together. I lost two wives to cancer and know what it feels like trying to live alone. Thank God for mydaughter, Sue and my grandson, Cody they take good care of me. With love and appreciation, Vince.WILLIAM (BILL) BALLIN.. 335 Brooks Bank Rd. Oxford, N.Y. 1380-3136.... John Boy, This is one ofyour old pals who decided to drop you a line. Hope everything went well with youroperation { it did Thanks} Ilive on a farm, 120 acres and 4 horses still believe it or not, I am a Town Constable. I will drop you a line nowand then letting you know what is going on in my life. I saw the article you had on Larry Neushotz, believe itor not he was one of my boys when I worked in the 1st. Pct. I like your articles in the Newsletter. Tell all theguys I miss them . Good Luck, Ex Sgt. Bill BallinJOE GRELLA.... jgrella@tampabay.rr.com ..Hello--I spoke to my new friend VYNL Coonan, we had a fewgood laughs along with Luke's cousin, Nancy HandwALKER. The Thanksgiving trip up to Long Island and myhunting trip to Masonville are well in the rear viewmirror. Arlene and I took Maureen McCabe up with us to seeher sisters and brother. We drove up to Va. and spent a day and night with Flo and Harry Hall at their beautifulhome in the country. Harry forced me to taste test some single malt scotch. Unable to give a fair report, I needed

more than one sample. The weather could not have been better. There was some minor rain, but hey, the huntwent well. I came home with a four pointer in the cooler. Not a trophy, but it tastes better than broiled back tag.My son, Joe filed his land owners permit and my nephew ,Mike bagged a three pointer. We had our NassauBlue Christmas Party at a local restaurant today, Saturday, December 4th. There were 42 members inattendance and a good time was had by all. It was good to see our snowbirds and people from our sick list whowere able to attend. We are looking forwards to the reunion in Kissimmee, things are moving along well.GOOD AND WELFARE:Get Well.... As most of you know the retired column is written one month in advance ofpublication. During the month of October, my wife, Betty wrote the column for me and for the first time everneither of us re read it. I physically was not up to it at that time due to my surgery and somehow the spell checkchanged the names of a few Retirees - so to Maureen McCabe, Vinny Cloonan and Nancy Handwerker ourApologies. Great talking to George Izzo, Jim Mackey, Al Livoti and Greg Vazquez. Thanks guys. Also thanksto Alex Behr for the 51st Anniversary card you sent to Betty and I.We are now in a new year, so lets hear fromyou ! We just got back from the reunion and have all thechores finished. With all the work and prep behind us, it went so fast and now seems so simple. With theexception of a minor truck repair and more reunion shopping, Arlene and I never got to leave the hotel. I did getsome relief behind the bar by Frank McCabe's daughter Charlene, she was Great!! a real trouper. Without thehelp of all our volunteers, we could have never pulled it off. Even if I must say so myself, I feel the hospitalityroom is second to none. If anybody left that room wanting for anything then there is nothing on this planet tomake them happy. We did our very very best with what we had control over. We wanted our guests and fellowretirees to have and enjoy choice food and drink in our hospitality room over the three days and evenings it isopen. For this to occur, there is a tremendous amount of unseen work by many of our people. The Saturdaynight dinner dance is to be the close of a wonderful time. We do try to provide a good menu. This is where werely on hope and faith that our hotel staff provides what we contracted for. They came thru in providing usassistance in our hospitality room. I will not try to tell anyone they got what we paid for at dinner, the hotel letus down and we are letting them know it in no uncertain terms. The only thing the hotel provides us with in thehospitality room is the room and ice. We are working on next years reunion already, we will dobetter. We truly enjoy the reunions and bringing our friends old and new together. We hope to see you nextyear. Both you and Betty were missed and asked for by many.

DON SMITH... d_smith005@verizon.net Just left the Nassau Blue Reunion. It was very well attended andevery one had a good time. We got in two rounds of golf with lessons from John Daly and Jim Iulo. There was a great tribute to the late Frank Mc Cabe who started the whole thing 18 yrs. ago. It is sad that wecan't encourage some of the new retirees to come down and join us We lost quite a few guys this past yearsolely due to age related problems and an infusion of newbie's is just what we need. Imet a retiree who I hadn't seen since we left the academy 43 yrs. ago. It was really great and it is a great excuseto get away from the snow. I became involved four and a half years after a phone call from Walter Swensonwho asked if I was still in touch with some of the guys that we worked with in the first and before you weknew it there was a table of ten guys from the first pct. I realize that I am being a bit redundant and I know youare getting the message but will you act on it when the next notification is printed in all the newsletters comethe Summer of this year. I hope so.RAY MATHISEN ... 111 Ruff Grouse Lane, Shohola, Pa 18458 570-685-1743. Ray called to inform us that hiswife, Joyce has passed away. He said that he has received numerous phone calls from some of the guys heworked with and they did not know of Joyce's passing and that leads to Ray having to go through the hardpart of her passing once again to each caller. He thought it may be easier if everyone knew of his situation, thus less questions (Our Deepest Sympathy)GEORGE MORRISH ... piperNCPD@aol.com Dear John, Please accept my sincerest apologies for notknowing about your recent illness. For whatever reason, I missed reading the issue of The Newsletter that hadBetty's Retired Column. It must have gotten discarded while I was away trying to kill Bambi and brain cells inNovember. I'm really glad to hear that you're OK and are hoping to catch up with both of you in Kissimmee onWednesday. I talked Tom Hoell and his wife Gwen into coming down to Nassau Blue, from their mountainretreat in Walton, New York. He's about twenty miles from my place in Deposit, and we try to kill brain cellstogether, when we get the chance. When I mentioned the reunion, he jumped at it and said that the main reasonhe wanted to go, besides the party, was to see you again. It was also great to hear that Bill Ballin is alive andwell. Way back in 1973 when I made Sergeant, Bill retired. I asked for and was granted, his Sergeant'stin, badge number 17. When we ran into each other at parties, he would borrow it back and pin it on his shirtfor awhile. It must have been a lucky tin, because when Imade Lieutenant, the badge went to Harry Biffar, who subsequently got promoted to Lieutenant also. I don'tknow what happened to it after that. I think it was lucky because Bill had it first and the nice guy rubbed off onit. Anyway, best regards to both of you and hope to see you in Florida. Message 2Real sorry that you won't be at the Nassau Blue Reunion. We'll have a drink to your recovery and pass alongyour good wishes. I was trying to figure out just how old Bill is. I know he was in his fifty's when heretired and that was back in 1973. I remember he was on the precinct softball team back then and I rememberhe chased down a guy who stole a car and locked him up,which really impressed a new cop like me. Most of thesupervisors back then were only interested in a free meal and it was great to see an older Sgt. still taking care ofbusiness and playing ball with the kids. I'm going to write him. I have a house up in Deposit, New York. If he'sclose enough, I'll try to swing by his place next summer. I'll let you know how I make out. ps: Lots of snowthis year. Don't you miss it ? ( NO we did have some here in TX this year)>BILL STEHLING.... Bill called when he found out that I did not attend the Nassau Blue Reunion. Bill did notattend due to leg problems, but sends his greetings to all. He also said he has the " Worlds Best Neighbor". BillZirk is his neighbor who happens to own a riding mower, so as Bill Z mows his lawn, he just goes ahead andmows Bill S lawn.. Now that is a good friend and neighbor. Bill is very thankful for the help.BOB LIVOTI - President ARPO.......... I've been asked to put this out about Pete Schiro. He's in hospice care athome and his wife has been taking care of him. yesterday afternoon. The knee replacement surgery was another success! Home Health Care started today witha visit from the nurse. Therapists will start on Monday and if it's like my other knee, will be twice a week, 2 hrs.each, for 3 weeks. Last stay at the hospital rehab was 19 days -- this time just 12 days! Everyone is surprisedon how fast I heal and recuperate. Use the walker a bit as well as the cane but that should be finished by nextweek. Also, thanks to those who visited, called and/or sent a card.LOU MARCUS.. . nassaublue@gmail.com .. Hope you guys are well. I’ve been meaning to let you know howNassau Blue turned out (I’m sure you’ve heard some of it by now). All in all, another great time. I> missedseeing you both this year. I got there a day early (Wed), checked into the hotel at 2:30, went to the bar by thepool for a martini and sat by the pool reading, with a nice Cuban cigar that I got while I was on the cruise theweek before. I had planned to go across the street to the steak house for dinner. On my way through the lobby Iran into the crowd from NB….didn’t realize they were coming in on Wed. So we all went across the street fordinner. By the time we got back and it was time to retire. Thursday was spent in the hospitality room and thenanother group of us went to the same steak house for dinner and drinks. We had ordered dinner and the waitresscomes back with the drinks…she puts my adult beverage down and says to me “Mr. Marcus – your wife calledand said for you to behave.” At first I wasn’t quite sure what to say because there is no way she could haveknown who I was…and then I saw Vince Cloonan at another table with a grin on his face. He got me good.Friday was much of the same… except we went to dinner at an Italian place. Saturday’s memorial presentationby Frank’s daughter was very moving. The dinner itself – the food – was pretty crappy and the overall servicewas pretty bad. Otherwise a wonderful time. On Sunday I drove to Brooksville to visit with friends. I wassupposed to stay untilTuesday but there were predictions of a major snow storm for Tuesday so I left a day early. Even what ourweather has been like I should have stayed in Florida – until March. Unfortunately, I had to be at the theaterWednesday and Thursday so I really had to get back before the storm hit. I’ll be looking forward to nextyear….and I hope you guys will make it. I’ll send you some pictures as soon as I> can decrease the file size foryou. BTW – Wayne Seay was there this year as was George Morrish.KIM O'CONNOR ( Daughter of Ray O'Connor , Deceased) It is Kim O'Connor, Ray and Cookie's daughter. Iam sure by now you have received quite a bit of feedback from the reunion both good and bad, after hearingabout some of the feedback I felt compelled to give you an outsider's objective opinion...I am not a member andmaybe people will feel like I am speaking out of turn, but I am a neutral set of eyes I have no loyalties toanyone...I have nothing to gain. I just have an honest, unbiased opinion. My Mom and I did not arrive untilvery late Friday night due to the fact that we had a concert on Friday night in Tampa so I am basing all mycomments on the time we spent at the reunion Saturday and Sunday...Saturday morning the breakfast was good, not great, but good it was obvious that they were a bit understaffed, and the breakfast bar quality could havebeen a bit better, but it was still acceptable... Saturday the hospitality room was tremendous the selection offoods and beverages was quite extensive and the presentation was great...I also know how much work went intosetting up all the food and beverages and the set up crew of Joe & Arlene Grella, Kathy & Rich Buchan,Maureen & Charlene McCabe, George & Alice Kenney, Anne Wiley, the Milroys, and the Hartmans, if I forgotanyone I am sorry - they did an amazing job. $20.00 for all that food and beverages is just an incrediblebargain considering that it was for the whole weekend and no limits. The dining room where we had the dinnerdance was decorated beautifully. The DJ was excellent as well, the only negative part of the night was thedinner itself...the food was terrible...it was mostly cold, the buffet line was so long that by the time you got tothe carving station what you had on your plate was ice cold There also was no chicken or fish choices availablefor dinner. they had no sterno under the serving dishes, so even if the food had been good it wouldn't have beenhot. I felt bad because it kind of put a damper on the meal, but the tribute to Frank McCabe was lovelyand very moving and the dancing was a great deal of fun...I just felt bad that so many people were so unhappyand they let that one misstep to put a damper on the rest of the weekend because the rest of it, other than the

eakfast on Sunday morning which was not very good either. Overall, I had a wonderful time and I think a lotof hard work went into it, and I just wanted that to be recognized. I also know that the hotel hadsome scheduling and staffing issues that were the cause for some of the problems that I know. Joe Grella andthe board are going to address with the hotel management. I just think that even though some things did notwork out perfectly, it still was a very nice and successful weekend. Thanks for letting me write to you and saymy peace.(This was Kim's first time at the reunion).ATTENDEES TO NASSAU BLUE REUNIONKip Alden & Marylyn Doane, Andy & Cindy Beauchamp, Mike Amico, Diane Berni & Bill Kinsley,PhilipBlessinger, Pat Bock, Richie & Kathy Buchan, John Bruns,Harry Callahan, Joe Carbone, John Clarke, Bruce &Madelyn Clime, Vince & Jean Cloonan, Marty & Maria Condon, Wallace Cottrell & Betty Miller, DonDiagneault, Jerry Cronin, John Daly, Michael & Edey DeBenedetto, Ken DeBoer, Charlie Donsis, Joan Drager,Roman & Zora Duchnowski, Mario & Jean Furno, Gary & Linda Govetoso, Clay Gundersen, Howie & DeniseFeuer, Jim & Pat Gardner, Ed & Helene Graham, Howie & Patty Hartman, Tom & Gwen Hoell, Jim & JoanneIulo, George & Alice Anne Kenny, Joe & Carola King, Andy Kull, Thomas Lamb, William & KathleenAufecht, Bill & Maryann Bialkoski, TomDiane Brennan, Bill & Betty Burns, Jack & Anne Carson. So I finally sat down to say hello to you and the great people I worked with. Many probably don't remember me but a short bio. I was sworn in on 01-17-69, worked in the Third precinct,Highway Patrol and the 8th. Sq. where I retired after 22 years on 01-24-91. After I retired, I didn't think I'd goback to work, but after 18 years with the Las Vegas Valley Water District ( Security and EnforcementDepartment), I retired again. Now after over 7 months of being retired again, the Water District asked me tocome back to work temporary, with the rash of copper and brash thefts occurring with the utilities. I'm a liaisonfor them with the Las Vegas Metro PD. It's only part time, guess I just can't stay idle. On a bowling leagueand golfing with my wife ( Barbara ). But working 3 days a week gives both of us some space. Hopeeveryone who is beating the system, stays well and continues to do so.
