SAMPLE, DESIGN, & INTERVENTIONACHIEVEMENTMEASUREmotor 3. Rating of thechild’s hand dominanceOUTCOMEThere were high correlations between multiple parameters in the PEER.The McCarthy Scales of Children’s Abilities showed that children withsickle cell disease were functioning within normal cognitive levels.Cohen (1994)Sample: N = 10 children aged 6.6 years to 16.1 yearswith homozygous sickle cell disease (HbSS) receivingtransfusion therapy following a stroke who wererecruited from the pediatric sickle cell clinic at theMedical College of Georgia in Augusta; Divided into 1.)Children with only a single left hemisphere stroke (LCI)(N = 4) and 2.) those with only a single right hemispherestroke (RCI) (N = 6)Stroke Measures: Noncontrasted computed tomography(CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), transcranialDoppler, and angiographyStudy Design: Cross-sectionalNeuropsychologicalEvaluation:(1) tests of intelligence--Wechsler IntelligenceScale for Childrenrevised(WISC-R); (2)tests of linguisticfunctions—PeabodyPicture VocabularyTest-Revised (PPVT-R), Wepman AuditoryDiscrimination Test(Wepman), BostonNaming Test (BNT);(3) tests of visualspatial/constructionalabilities—Developmental Test ofVisual MotorIntegration (DTVMI),Test of VisualPerceptual Skills,Kaufman AssessmentBattery for Children(Gestalt Closure); (4)tests of sensory-motorfunctions: FingerTapping, Finger TipNumber Writing; (5)test of memory--Kaufman Assessmentbattery for Children,Detroit Test ofLearning Aptitude-2,test of visual perceptualskills; (6) test ofachievement—WRAT-R and Gray oralThe LCI subgroup exhibited a global impairment (verbal as well asnonverbal/spatial abilities) on intelligence testing. The RCI groupexhibited impairment of nonverbal/ spatial abilities only. The verbal IQ of the LCI subgroup was significantly lower (p = 0.05) thanthat of the RCI subgroup which was in the low-average range. The LCI subgroup exhibited impairment across all language measures. The RCI group performed significantly lower (p = 0.05) on assessment ofexpressive vocabulary only.On measures of visual-spatial/constructional ability, both subgroupsexhibited a similar pattern of performance with no significant differences. The performance of the LCI subgroup on the auditory/verbal memoryassessment was significantly below (p = 0.01) than of the RCI subgroup, which was in normal limits. Both subgroups experienced mild difficulty on immediate visual/spatialmemory testing, with no significant differences between groups’ notes onthese measures. The LCI subgroup experienced difficult across all academic areas. TheRCI subgroup tended to demonstrate poor performance in the area ofarithmetic only. The only significant difference was on the readingcomprehension section of the Grey Oral Reading Test-Revised. The LCIsubgroup was found to be significantly below that of the RCI subgroup (p= 0.01), which was within the normal range.E-84
