JOSEPH CARROLLTHE PEDDIE SCHOOLA two year starter for <strong>the</strong> Falcons at right guard, Joe Carroll was one <strong>of</strong> head coachFrank deLaurentis’ most dependable players.Still, it’s not slighting Carroll’s football talent to say he accomplished bigger things<strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> field during his years at Peddie.Carroll was one <strong>of</strong> 20 high school students in <strong>the</strong> nation selected to perform graduatelevel research at <strong>the</strong> Princeton Plasma Physics Lab during <strong>the</strong> summer <strong>of</strong> 2010. Hehas worked during <strong>the</strong> school year for class credit and has been asked to return thissummer to a lab dedicated to designing and constructing a small scale nuclear reactorto power <strong>the</strong> greater Princeton area.“Joe is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> finest young men and finest young scientists <strong>of</strong> this year – orany year – at Peddie,” teacher Nicholas Guilbert said. “Joe is <strong>the</strong> real deal, a greatacademic and personal asset to any college in <strong>the</strong> country.”An outstanding lacrosse player at Peddie as well, Joe is an outstanding saxophonist who takes time to participate in a variety<strong>of</strong> community service activities. Carroll has been part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pennswood Village retirement Community and helped at <strong>the</strong>Woods Services School, Mercer Street Friends, <strong>the</strong> Morrisville Food bank, and <strong>the</strong> Fallsington Library.A technical assistant at Newtown Friends School, Carroll has received high honors all four years at Peddie. He is a recipient<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Steven. C. Lundy / Dubois Scholarship for Academic Excellence and earned <strong>the</strong> Pennsylvania Higher EducationAssistance Agency Merit award as well as <strong>the</strong> Peddie Excellence in Scientific Research award..KEITH DEARDENTHE PENNINGTON SCHOOLKeith Dearden’s throwing ability brought a new dimension to head coach JerryEure’s <strong>of</strong>fense and kept <strong>the</strong> Red Raiders as a small school force <strong>the</strong> last two seasons.Dearden, who transferred to Pennington before his junior year, threw for over2,600 yards and 30 touchdowns in two seasons, breaking all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> school’s majorcareer passing marks. He was all Independence League for two years and was votedOffensive Player <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year by <strong>the</strong> league coaches in 2010.He’s also one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> top baseball players in Mercer County and played for Pennington’sstate and Mercer County Tournament championship team as a junior.Dearden has also been a top notch student at Pennington as well as a great ambassadorfor <strong>the</strong> prep campus. He’s part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> peer leadership program and is a studentrepresentative for <strong>the</strong> school’s Open House program.Away from school, he has helped a number <strong>of</strong> youth baseball clinics, volunteered at <strong>the</strong> Autistic Run at Ewing High, andcoached youth travel basketball teams. He has participated in <strong>the</strong> Sunshine Foundation’s Operation Dream Lift programand helped raise money for <strong>the</strong> Sunshine Foundation.“Keith is a great young man and one <strong>of</strong> those kids who just gets it,” assistant football and head baseball coach Bob McHalesaid. “He has a host <strong>of</strong> friends and confidants and can light up a room with his personality. He is very personable andrespectful <strong>of</strong> his teachers.
