Paint Selection! In order to get the best finish for your machine, which isafter all the first thing which people judge yourrefurbishment on, you need to select the correct paint foryour application. Using the Vapormatic colour selectionchart you can be assured of the closest match to theoriginal machine colour. Quality is key in paint selection, donot be duped by low priced paints, as with all things in life,‘you get what you pay for’ (see about paint). By choosingVapormatic paint you can be assured that the componentsare fully matched and that the finish will withstand therigours of our agricultural environment for many years.Lower quality paints have a number of disadvantagesincluding: poor adhesion, low solid content (one way ofreducing cost by putting less paint in the tin and morethinners) high opacity (more coats needed to get goodcoverage), poor resistance to UV rays, sunlight and rapidloss of shine. Another prime benefit of choosingVapormatic paint is that they are less harmful to you andthe environment than most other agricultural and industrialpaints. Just take a look at a can of Vapormatic paint andyou will notice that there are no orange boxes, no skull andcross bones and no dead fish and trees on the can!Colour match is extremely important, particularly if you arejust painting a single panel or doing touch up work, because we only use high quality ingredients, we canguarantee that if you run out of paint, you will get the exactsame colour in the next tin that you buy! All our paints aremanufactured to stringent colour matching and batchtesting procedures which ensure that you don’t have tocheck batch codes or necessarily buy all your paint in onego to ensure consistency. What we do recommend however, is that you matchVapormatic paints with Vapormatic thinners and Vapormaticprimers, This way you will ensure that you achievethe best match and finish.

About PaintSynthetic enamel paint generally made of fiveingredients, namely binder, pigments, fillers, solventsand additives. The binder is the main liquid ingredient(the laquer) and helps to determine what the paint willdo (its mechanical and chemical resistance) and howit will cure. In general, there are two differentprocesses by which alkyd resin intended for use asbinders in paint are made. The better quality resins(such as the ones used in Vapormatic paint) have auniform molecular structure, provided by the processby which they are made, whereas a lower qualitybinder has a more randomly orientated moleculestructure. When the good quality binders are used in apaint formulation, the paint will have a high resistanceagainst wear by weather and UV light. This allows thepaint to retain its glossy surface for a longer period oftime. The pigment is the colour providing ingredient inpaint. Pigments are powders that selectively absorb orreflect the light, thus appearing as colour. The qualityof the pigment can significantly effect the opacity andcolour fastness of a paint, especially for red andyellow shades. Vapormatic only use high qualitypigments for our paint so after applying one or twocoats, it will produce a sufficient opacity and retain itscolour for a longer period of time in comparison tolower quality paints.Fillers may be variants of talcum, silica, lime or clayand are used to thicken the paint film, providingvolume and support the film structure. The solvents which may be organic solvents or insome cases water, are used to thin the paint, so thatit may be sprayed, dipped or brushed. The solventsevaporate after the paints has been applied, leavingthe paint to cure. Vapormatic paint contains nonaromaticsolvents which reduce toxicity and reducethe health hazard to the user. Finally, additives serve many purposes in paint. Fromanti-foaming agents and wetting agents to anti-settlingagents, each additive serves a specific purpose andhelps to create a well performing, stable paint.

Health Hazard IssuesIf a particular paint contains substances that areconsidered to be a health hazard to the user, the paintcan label is required to show the symbols indicating atype (signified by the pictures) and level of hazard(signified by the number) such as the ones shownbelow.R50 Very toxic to aquatic organisms.R51 Toxic to aquatic organisms.R52 Harmful to aquatic organisms.R53 May cause long term adverse effects in theaquatic environment.R23 Toxic by inhalation.R24 Toxic in contact with skin.R25 Toxic if swallowed.R20 Harmful by inhalation.R21 Harmful in contact with the skin.R22 Harmful if swallowed. As you will notice, Vapormatic paint does not have anyof these hazard labels as it is formulated with care andconsideration for the environment and the end user.

VapormaticTHE GENUINE ALTERNATIVEHow to Build your own Spray BoothStep 1: To provide a dust freeenvironment when painting your machine, construct a suitable sized spraybooth.Step 2: Cover the frame withplastic sheeting and ensure that itis free from any small tears. Youwill need some form of ventilationin the booth to remove paint dustand solvent vapors as well asclean air coming in. However, youmust ensure that the ventilatorsare safe to use with flammablevapors. Finally, hose down thefloor to keep dust down further.Step 3: Make sure that thebooth is well lit. This can beachieved using fluorescentfreestanding spot lamps orbright overhead lighting - DONOT use 500W halogen lampsthey get hot and may cause thethinner vapors to ignite orexplode.Step 4: Once you are sure that yourbooth is sealed from dust and airborneparticles, you are ready to spray yourtractor.Spray Painting—Hints & tipsVARIED METHODS OF METALPREPARATION• When blast cleaning, it is advisableto clean the surface of oil, greaseand dirt first. If you fail to cleanyour machine, the dirt will getimbedded into the metal and willcause trouble later.• Blast clean your machine withsand, glass, or plastic to ensurethat all dirt and old paint isremoved.• It is essential that you apply thefirst coat of primer to your surfaceon the same day that you blastcleaned. This is due to the virginsubstrate surface reacting with theenvironment and may start to forma coat of red ‘flash rust’• Alternatively if you do not have ablast cleaner, you can chemicallystrip the old paint.• Wash off the stripper with hot wateron high pressure.• If none of the above methods isavailable, sand the area down toremove any remnants.PREPARING TO SPRAY• Most paints work best at 20°c, sowhy do most rebuilders insist onpainting in the Winter or Springwhen it is cold and windy? Mainlybecause we are all so keen tocomplete our rebuilds. To ensurea high quality finish, wait until theSummer to paint and don’t paint inthe evenings!• Check the air supply for waterand oil contamination and checkthat the air line works as it is supposedto.• Adjust the spray gun to the correctair pressure.• Adjust the paint to the correctviscosity which will depend on thetemperature and environment.• Keep a constant check on thehumidity in your spray booth -evaporation removes heat fromthe substrate, so the temperaturemay fall below the dew point. Alsoavoid cold drafts.• Do not paint if the differencebetween the dew point and thetemperature is less that 3ºc• If you are in doubt what the dewpoint is, contact you local airportor aerodrome who will be happyto help you out.• Do not paint in the evening as thedrop in temperature will causedew to form.• To ensure that your metal work isat a correct temperature beforeyour start painting, it is best toleave the machinery in thespraying area overnight so that itadjusts to room temperature.SPRAY PAINTING• Preparation, preparation, preparation!Do not expect primers or topcoats tocover up blemishes, lumps and bumps.Sort these out BEFORE you startpainting!• Spraying paint on too thickly can result inruns and unsightly streaks. Remember -two thin coats of paint are better than onethick coat!• Hold the spray gun straight at thumbswidth (6 to 10 inches) from the surface• It is also important not to thin the paint toomuch as this will sag the paint or make ittoo transparent.• Before the topcoat goes on, apply aprimer to ensure best adhesion.• Once the primer has been applied anddried thoroughly, clean with air and a tackcloth (a cloth impregnated with a slightcoat of resin)• Ensure that moisture has not settled onthe metal before you apply the paint.• If you want an exceptionally smoothsurface, lightly sand down the paintwork -however, this is not always essential.• If you prefer a very deep and glossyfinish on your project, and require it to beextra UV resistant, Vapormatic clearYacht varnish tinted with around 5%of the colour you are using willproduce the desired effect.PAINTING ON A FLATSURFACE• Using a latex glove and a4" (100mm) medium pile glosspaint roller, you can make anexcellent finish without havingall the time consumingpreparation time.• Dip the roller in to your painttin then squeeze all the air outof the roller (disposable latexgloves are ideal for this job!)• Dip the roller in the paint andsqueeze the excess paint off.You can then start to roll acoat of paint over the flatsurface. Remember that youare applying a very largevolume of paint to the panel sothere is a tendency for thepaint to run, however, withpractice, a single coat is allthat is required for a perfectfinish.GOOD LUCK WITH YOURPROJECT!
