Summary and Statistical Report of the 2007 Population and Housing Census Results 7IntroductionSince 1984, three approximately decennial Population and Housing Censuses have beenconducted to generate relevant statistical data that reflect the socio-economic conditions ofthe inhabitants of Ethiopia. Such statistical data are useful both for the design and preparationof various development plans and for monitoring and evaluating their impact.The statistical data that have been collected by the censuses include the following: populationsize, age, sex, ethnic group, religion, fertility, mortality, migration, literacy and education, maritalstatus, economic activity, migration, and housing.The third Population and Housing Census was conducted in two phases. The first, begun inMay 2007, comprised census enumeration in mainly non-pastoral areas; the second phase,carried out in November, 2007, expanded the enumeration to pastoral areas of Afar and SomaliRegions. Accordingly, the results presented in this volume are aggregate data enumerated attwo different times.This report presents the summary results of the first release of the 2007 Population and HousingCensus. The statistical data are compiled and annexed to this report. For detailed information,users are advised to refer to the tables in the Annex. .Table 1 presents regional population by sex and place of residence (urban/rural). Table 2aand Table 2b contain regional population by single age and by age group. Table 3 showsthe population of regions, zones and Weredas by urban and rural areas. The total number ofhouseholds in the conventional households and average household size by region are given inTable 4. Distribution of ethnic groups (nations and nationalities) and religious composition byregion are provided in Table 5 and Table 6 respectively.It is important to note that the census results for Afar and Somali Regions in all the tables referto the counted population as of November 2007. For the rest of the regions, the results refer tocounted population as of May 2007.
