• introductionThis scenario puts the use of <strong>DNA</strong> in investigations at an international level intocontext. In this scenario details will be given about a rape and murder that occurred atVienna international airport (VIA) and the evidence that was present at the suspectedscene of the crime. In many ways this scenario is applicable to a variety of crimescenes that use <strong>DNA</strong> profiling to help bring the perpetrator to justice. The followingchapters will address the issues involved in an investigation of this nature. They aim tooffer advice on best standard practice and guidelines on procedures by demonstratingthe best approach for the crime committed at VIA. Accompanying this best approachthere are also some general points for reference, however the most important thing toremember is that each crime scene is different and each approach will be unique. Thebest way to approach such investigations is with careful consideration for all possibilitiesand by looking to apply the most accurate and up-to-date information possible.Picture 1 – Vienna International Airport•discovery of the bodyAt 06.00 on Monday 17 April, the transit cleaning supervisor arrives at work and walksalong the corridor to the store room. Everything appears normal as he walks past thetoilets.He pauses to reach for his keys from his coat pocket and looks to the store room door.Unusually, the door is closed but it is not secure. Looking more closely he can see signsof force to the side of the lock and notices fragments of wood and paint on the floor.PAGE 12FICTITIOUS SCENARIO
He cautiously pushes the door open and looks into the darkened room. The light fromthe corridor illuminates the first metre inside the door but he does not enter. Reachingaround the door frame to his left he feels along the wall at chest height attemptingto locate the light switch. The lights flicker and then illuminate the room, he looksaround.Picture 2 - Entrance to the female toilet areaand access to the male toilet area and the storage roomThe room is quite small, approximately three square metres, and contains a sink andtaps on the left-hand wall and has four lockers against the back wall. To the right arethree armchairs all facing towards the door. Finally in front of the chairs a rubberbackedgrey mat covers the cold tiled floor.Although he immediately recognizes his surroundings his eyes are drawn to the matand the body of a female lying lifeless before him. The figure is positioned before him onher back, with her head against the chair leg and her right arm above her head beneaththe chair. Her head is turned away from the door and her long blonde hair covers herface.Her clothing is disturbed. She is lying on her three-quarter length cream coat whichshe is still wearing. A knee-length black skirt is pushed up towards her waist and whiteunderwear is secured around her left knee. Her white top is torn and reveals her midriff.Her right shoe remains on her foot and the left foot lies behind the door which is nowopen and close to her handbag.Using his pocket radio the supervisor calls his control room to inform them and requestpolice attendance at the scene.
