Chapter 4 –Modelling Soil Erodibility Dynamicsdevelopment of AUSLEM (Chapter 5) seeks to model these dynamics by upgrading themodel functionality (after Webb et al., 2006) such that it captures this continual and nonlinearresponse of land erodibility to changes in landscape condition.A significant contribution of the model developed in this chapter is that it provides aframework that can be used to test and develop our understanding of the effects of static anddynamic controls on soil and land erodibility. In addition to this, the model framework isversatile in that it can be applied with varying levels of input knowledge and complexity. Thedevelopment of models forces us to critically assess our understanding of environmentaldynamics. This process has been important in highlighting the paucity of quantitative datarelating soil properties, climate variability and land management conditions to changes in soilaggregation and surface crusting, which has restricted the development and parameterisationof models to predict temporal changes in soil erodibility, including that presented here.Future research extending beyond this thesis must use quantitative approaches in monitoringand experimentation to advance our understanding of soil erodibility dynamics. In particular,research must not lose sight of the requirement to integrate research outcomes into holisticmodels to simulate soil and land erodibility to wind.128
Chapter 5 – Land Erodibility Model DevelopmentChapter 5A Model to Predict Land Susceptibility to Wind Erosion inWestern Queensland, AustraliaThis chapter addresses Objectives 4 and 6 by developing a functional land erodibility modelthat can be applied to assess land susceptibility to wind erosion across western Queensland,Australia.
