200 R. ENGELsive. Les températures moyennes sont de "ordre de 5° vers 1200 m et de 10° dansl'ensemble de la plaine. Au fort de l'été, les températures élevées jointes à une fortehumidité de l'air créent un effet de serre typique du climat local. Les brouillards d'automne,qui peuvent se manifester pendant de longues journées dans la plaine, sontégalement des phénomènes caractéristiques, surtout lorsqu'ils s'accompagnent d'uneinversion des températures quand ,le soleil brille en altitude.HydrographieL'III est la principale rivière de l'Alsace. Sa source se trouve dans le Sundgau etson cours est dans l'ensemble parallèle à celui du Rhin dans lequel elle se jette aunord de Strasbourg. Les nombreuses rivières descendant des Vosges suivent unedirection générale ouest - est pour se terminer dans l'III au sud de Strasbourg, oule Rhin au nord de cette ville. Les travaux du grand canal d'Alsace ont eu pour conséquenceune importante modification du régime des eaux de la plaine dont la nappephréatique a subi une baisse sensible.VégétationEn raison de la très grande diversité des sols et du relief, la végétation est trèsdiversifiée. Les surfaces cultivées sont très importantes et les produits très variés.La couverture forestière quasi continue dans les Vosges se traduit par un taux deboisement de 33 % pour les deux départements alsaciens. Dans le Haut-Rhin, certainssites des collines calcaires et de la plaine sont marqués par un caractère steppique.Les dépressions des rieds et les forêts rhénanes sont des milieux très originauxdont la richesse et l'importance du point de vue écologique ont été mises enévidence alors même qu'ils étaient déjà voués à la disparition.FloreElle est relativement riche si on la compare à celle de la Lorraine voisine. Elle comprendun grand nombre d'éléments continentaux, mais également des éléments nordiquesse situant à la limite de leur aire de répartition, dont Galla palustris. Des élémentstypiques du sud-est de l'Europe comme Astragalus danieus et Allium suaveolenss'y rencontrent ainsi que des subméditerranéennes dont Seilia autumnalisou des pseudatlantiques avec Asplenium billotii et Garum vertieillatum. Les HautesVosges se caractérisent en outre par la présence d'une série de plantes des Pyrénéesqui sont absentes de la Forêt-Noire. La présence de ces espèces qui se trouventà la limite est de leur aire de répartition est en liaison avec les grandes glaciations.Ce sont des plantes largement répandues en altitude comme Viola lutea ssp.lutea O. ssp. elegans Kirschl.), Selinum pyrenaeum, etc.. A noter également la présencede belles tourbières avec leur flore typique, ainsi que la zone des étangs desVosges saônoises, tout aussi remarquable, mais bien moins connue. Aucune desespèces appartenant à la flore régionale ne mérite le qualificatif d'endémique, à partpeut-être Gampanula baumgartenii dont le statut réel n'est pas clair.
