Dear Friends of Bishop Ward High School, Thank you very much for attending the 2012 Bishop Ward Auction and for supporting our students! We continue to work hard to honor our mission statement to provide a quality, Catholic, college-prep education that promotes the development of the body, mind and soul of each student. A few highlights since last year’s Auction: • Approximately 93% of the Class of 2012 has started college. • We are implementing the Year of Faith at Bishop Ward, which will include even more prayer opportunities and vocation discernment than in past years. • Our Science Lecture Series is now in its fourth year, but we also have many local business leaders coming to give talks as well as local Counsel Generals of foreign nations, including the Kingdom of Morocco. • And we have three foreign exchange students this year from Italy, France and South Korea. Tonight’s Fund-A-Need is to assist in paying for the restoration of the famous sports stadium at Dorney Field. The stadium looks great and is now protected against the elements for many more years to come. Thank you again for coming to the 2012 Auction. On behalf of the students and our dedicated faculty and staff, thank you very much for your support of Bishop Ward High School. God bless you, Fr. Michael Hermes President

We would like to enthusiastically and personally thank each and every one
of you for being a part of this evening of celebration in the spirit of giving
back to the Bishop Ward community.
As high school sweethearts who met here 30 years ago and who went on
to have fi ve children who also graduated or currently attend Bishop Ward,
it goes without saying that we are in awe of the power this small school
has had on so many people’s lives during its 104 years of existence! We
are eternally grateful for having been a part of this tradition and are here
tonight to make certain that this tradition continues well into the future.
Think of the thousands of students who have walked or will one day walk
the halls of this school and who will continue to “Go Back” and revisit
those moments at Bishop Ward that were so pivotal in their lives. We are
here tonight to ensure that those moments are never lost, never ended, and
will continue to be developed for many generations of students to come.
With your kind generosity and support, please join us in cherishing and
preserving these past, present, and future memories as we ALL “Go Back…
FUND-A-NEED 2012
STADIUM & TRACK AT DORNEY FIELD
As the cornerstone of tradition at Bishop Ward High School, the Football
Stadium and Track at Dorney Field has cultivated pride within our school
for the last 87 years. From countless athletic events to all-school mass;
from the homecoming parade to the student fundraising walk; the Football
Stadium and Track is an irreplaceable landmark within our community that,
with your help, will last for many years to come.
Students cheering on their classmates
under the Friday night lights has been
a beloved tradition for many years.
Ward Football began in 1925, then known as the Catholic High
Fighting Irish. In 1931 the school changed its name to Ward High and
adopted new school colors along with a new mascot. The team would
sport black and white and be known as the Ward Cyclones.

FUND-A-NEED 2012
STADIUM & TRACK AT DORNEY FIELD
We recently completed work over the summer to preserve and beautify
our historic stadium and track for the entire Cyclone family to enjoy.
However, the work isn’t done yet, so we need your help with a gift!
Take a look at what’s been completed:
Project Detail:
Waterproof Coating: Professionally applied waterproof urethane coating
to the top surfaces (risers and runs) of the concrete seating stands for
protection against the elements.
Seating Area: Removed existing seating and replaced with aluminum
plank seating. This created a clean, consistent look and will provide low
maintenance for years to come.
Sealcoat and Stripe Track: Created smooth clean appearance and
increased functionality for all students, teams and the community who
utilize throughout the year.
Flags, Goalpost & Lights: New fl ags in Bishop Ward colors were
installed, goalposts painted shiny yellow and additional lighting was added
to enhance visibility on fi eld.

MEET THE STUDENTS
Who better to tell the story of Bishop Ward than its students? Meet a few of the many
faces of Bishop Ward High School and experience Bishop Ward as they would...through
their eyes and their stories.
Antonio
Karla
Jairo
My name is Antonio, but most people call me Tony. I am a junior at
Bishop Ward. I was born in Split, Croatia, but my family came to the
U.S. when I was only 10 months old. We’ve lived here 14 years now
and I have so many great plans for my future.
I plan on attending college to study either astronomy, cosmology or
physics. I know Bishop Ward will give me the tools to have a bright
future. I’ve had some challenges in my life that have been really tough
on me. If it wasn’t for my Catholic faith and all of the people at
Bishop Ward, these times would have been even harder. The students
and faculty have been amazing to me and I’m really thankful. I am
proud to be a Cyclone.
My name is Karla and I am a junior at Bishop Ward. I remember when
Fr. Michael interviewed me when I was an 8th grader. I told him I
planned on attending college and graduating with a sociology or law degree.
Fr. Michael was fascinated by this and I remember him repeating,
“Karla, here at Ward we will make sure to prepare you for college and
get you to heaven.”After that I made sure I enrolled at Ward. Now I am
taking Honors classes and am part of the Pro-Life Club, Academy of
Finance, Student Ambassadors and much, much more.
It has truly been worth making the sacrifi ces necessary so I can attend
Bishop Ward. I am listening to God’s call and will be ready to take any
path. I know that the great Catholic education I am receiving will have
prepared me to reach my goals in life.
My name is Jairo and I am a sophomore. I went to a public school
before attending Bishop Ward and I have learned a lot about who
I am and where I’m going in life just by the little time I have spent
here. I am now confi dent that when I graduate, I won’t do it alone-
I’ll have God by my side.
I want to go very far in life. My biggest dream is to attend Stanford
University and become an aeronautical engineer. I believe that you
can become whoever you want, but that will not happen if you do
not work for it. Bishop Ward has a great staff with teachers who
actually care about you and your success. At Bishop Ward, I have the
resources I need to get me where I dream to go.

We are thankful to all Bishop Ward students and families for raising $38,000
to help close the gap between tuition and the full cost of education. Thank
you for doing your part in creating your high school experience!
part of your monthly budget to make a BIG impact in our
Gifts of Stock and Appreciated Assets
HOW IT WORKS
• You transfer appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual fund shares you
have owned for one year or more to Bishop Ward.
• Bishop Ward sells your securities and uses the proceeds for
scholarships and special programs.
BENEFITS
• You receive an immediate income-tax deduction for the fair
market value of the securities on the date of transfer, no matter
what you originally paid for them.
• You pay no capital gains tax on the transfer.
• Giving appreciated stock could be more benefi cial than giving
cash

Legacy Society
An important way in which you can support the legacy and tradition of
Bishop Ward High School is through charitable giving. There are a
number of ways to support the mission of the school and secure the
future for tomorrow’s students.
For example, your gifts can go toward scholarships. A minimum of
$10,000 would result in a scholarship fund in the name of your choice.
Charitable gifts can also result in savings on your income, estate, and
gift taxes as well as avoidance of capital gains taxes. There are a
number of ways to give, and charitable planning techniques allow you to
give now or at the time of your death.
The Legacy Society at Bishop Ward High School includes alumni and
friends who have either made a gift of at least $10,000 to the permanent
endowment fund and/or have included Bishop Ward High School in
their estate plans.
Thank you to our Legacy Society members for their belief in the Bishop
Ward mission and their vote of confi dence and faith in our future. It
is alumni and friends like them who will ensure the bright future for
Catholic education in Wyandotte County.
