4. CALCIUM CARBONATE
Tomas Bata University in Zlín, Faculty of Technology
Calcium carbonate is the next type of filler which is used for preparation of composite
materials. Low price and high number of deposit of calcium carbonate are the main reason
why calcium carbonate is used as filler.
The chemical formula of calcium carbonate is CaCO3. Colour of calcium carbonate is very
variable: from white to black. The hardness of calcium carbonate is 3 and the density is 2380
kg.m -3 .
Calcium carbonate is commonly used as filler in polymeric industry. The main reason is very
easy – the price of filler is lower in comparison with nanofiller. The next argument is
possibility to polypropylene or polyethylene matrixes.
In polymer industry, two types of calcium carbonate can be used. Micronized calcium
carbonate is the first type, micro coagulate calcium carbonate is the second type. [36-40]
