THE MAYS FAMILY INSTITUTE ON DIVERSEPHILANTHROPY AT INDIANA UNIVERSITYThe lifelong dedication to philanthropy we’ll honor.William G. <strong>Mays</strong> (Bill) devoted his life to philanthropy,leadership, and civic involvement. Throughout his 50-yearcareer, he worked to develop communities through hisleadership in the business, civic, and philanthropic sectors ofcities that he loved. Bill’s philanthropy and service extendedbeyond Indiana communities, leaving a lasting impacton state and national communities and organizations.His dedicated support and personal gifts to educational,religious and community service organizations havestrengthened, inspired, and connected the communitieswhere we live and thrive.In tribute to his legacy, together we will create the <strong>Mays</strong>Family Institute on Diverse Philanthropy at the Lilly FamilySchool of Philanthropy at Indiana University. The Institutewill honor Bill and his wife Rose’s philanthropic values whileproviding the community with a space for public inquiry,hands-on training, strengthened leaders, and the studyof generosity focused on under-served populations andminority communities.We have the power to enable future generations to discoverand apply the insights Bill gained and lived by duringhis lifetime. We can and will give them the capacity andopportunity to do more, with the <strong>Mays</strong> family as theirinspiration.Through scholarships and internships the Institute providesthe opportunity to introduce non-traditional, currentand emerging community leaders to successful modelsof leadership in which the values of giving are central asdemonstrated by the <strong>Mays</strong> family.


THE NEWUNDERSTANDINGOF PHILANTHROPYWE’LL GAIN


There is a rich tradition of philanthropy and service withinminority communities. It’s an integral and regular part of theirdaily lives, although many donors don’t connect with the term“philanthropy.” Giving is just part of what they do.The <strong>Mays</strong> Family Institute will be a global and national leader inestablishing philanthropic studies and non-profit leadership asan important field of academic inquiry. We can help shape anddefine philanthropic studies among diverse communities throughintentional and direct engagement.OUR VISIONThe <strong>Mays</strong> Family Institute on Diverse Philanthropy fits naturally withthe Lilly Family School’s mission of increasing the understandingof philanthropy and improving its practice worldwide throughresearch, teaching, training and civic engagement.The <strong>Mays</strong> Family Institute will provide a lasting legacy to the valuespromoted by Bill and Rose, their spirit of caring and unfailingpersonal integrity. It will examine contemporary and historicalgiving patterns and motivations across diverse communities. Andwe will honor the philanthropic values of the <strong>Mays</strong> family throughstrategic priorities that continually examine why and how diversecommunities give.Our mission is to foster a greater understanding of philanthropyand improve leadership opportunities within minority communities.We will look to examine inspired and informed donors to provideknowledge, education, and training. We will seek to understand theperceptions, practices, experiences, and needs of philanthropicindividuals and institutions. We will develop programming andservices to engage philanthropic practitioners, scholars, and thepublic at large in conversations and activities to advance this field.By institutionalizing the study of philanthropy in minoritycommunities, we will attract talented scholars and researchersto the field and gain a greater understanding of this serious andfundamental field of study.


THE WORK THAT HONORS THE LEGACYOpportunities for support of the <strong>Mays</strong> Family Institute.THE WILLIAM G. MAYS CHAIRThe chair holder will be appointedfor a specific period of time oras a permanent member of thePhilanthropic Studies faculty. Thechair holder will provide intellectualleadership, teach, research, meet withpublic groups, and publish materials.$2 millionDIRECTORBased on guidance from the chair andin collaboration with the School andacross the campus, this staff memberwill provide direction and implementthe activities of the Institute.$1.5 millionGRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPSThe Graduate Assistantship Programprovides a paid, part-time work positionfor students who excel academically.Students work at a company or nonprofitorganization to gain real-worldexperience while building their resumefor entering the workforce.$500,000FELLOWSHIPSFellowships will provide the opportunityfor exemplary students to meet andinteract with their peers and to gainenhanced access to faculty experience.Fellowships benefit students byproviding practical experiences andeducation beneficial for future jobplacement for students preparing toenter and lead in the non-profit sector.$250,000


SCHOLARSHIP FUNDEach year outstanding graduate andundergraduate students from minorityand under-served populations inIndiana and nationally will be selectedas Scholars. These talented young menand women will be highly sought after asleaders in philanthropy. The students willreceive support equal to ¾ of the cost ofeducation at <strong>IU</strong>PUI.$100,000VISITING SCHOLARS ANDPUBLIC LECTURESThe Institute will host one or more fellowsannually to explore issues related tophilanthropy and nonprofit leadership inminority communities.$100,00MENTORSHIP PROGRAMSThe Institute will develop mentorshipopportunities with alumni and mastersstudents for those interested in serviceto explore values related to philanthropyin minority communities.$100,000SEMINARS AND SYMPOSIABuilding on programs supported by Billand Rose <strong>Mays</strong>, the Institute will helppreserve the capacity for communityleaders to make the time to think andreflect.$100,000PUBLICATIONSIn keeping with the School’s commitmentto the broad dissemination of its work,the Institute will sponsor a specialseries through the School’s essay andworking paper series as well as publishmore lengthy works through the IndianaUniversity Press series in PhilanthropicStudies.$100,000
