Implementation of Transitional Laws in Serbia 2006According to Zivota Milanovic, another assault took place on July 11, 2005in Jagodina 845 . Zivota Milanovic told the Initiative’s investigator that someten meters away he noticed three young men with hoods on their headscoming toward him. As they were approaching, he noticed that one ofthem was holding a knife in his hand. He covered his head with his hand.The young man who held the knife came to him and stabbed him in thechest. Then all three of them ran, as some people from the building whoheard the screams went down and took Zivota to hospital. The knife wentbetween two ribs and did not hurt Zivota Milanovic’s lungs 846 . This casewas also reported to the police. One of the police officers who was takingthe statement commented: “Don’t go out at night, you provoke people...” 847Zivota waited for the next conversation with the police until September19, 2005. As he was asked to come to the police station, he came regularly.He described the conversation at the police station like this: “Everyonewas looking at me in a strange way, and there were police officers comingout of their offices to see who goes to room 32, where I was supposed togo. I do not know what the reason to such behavior was. Two older policeofficers interrogated me in room 32. They asked me a lot about my religiouscommunity, and often this discussion was about religious rights and thelike. Then I gave the police officers one issue of “Serbian Front” magazinepublished by some “Serbian Nationalist Association” from Jagodina, andI assume it was their members who attacked me” 848 . After that, the policedid not contact him again. Zivota first contacted a NGO in Belgrade – theLawyers’ Committee for Human Rights (hereinafter: YUKOM), whichwrote a request on July 20, 2005 to the Inspectorate General of the SerbianInterior Ministry 849 . YUKOM received a response from the InspectorateGeneral on October 19, 2005 saying: “After checkups, it was establishedthat based on the information they received from the damaged person andinformation collected during the operational work in the field, employeesof the Jagodina Secretariat did not take all measures and actions fromtheir competence to identify persons who attacked Milanovic and inflictedassaults and batteries on him, which is why the request will be consideredgrounded. Implementation of Transitional Laws in Serbia 2006taken against them in accordance with the law, on which Mr. Milanovic willbe informed on time”. 850 The perpetrators of this criminal act have notbeen found yet.According to Zivota Milanovic, a new incident happened on June 18,2006 851 . It was the night between Saturday and Sunday, that is, betweenJune 18 and June 19. At around 2 pm, Zivota started to open the door ofhis apartment to air it out from the smell of the lacquer for boats that heused for painting. As soon as he opened the door, he heard a thump, as ifsomeone jumped on the floor, and a person in hooded sweatshirt of darkcolor appeared in front of him. That person stabbed him in the stomachimmediately. Then he fell on the ground and somehow managed to pushthe doors of the apartment. The John Doe person who attacked him wasstrongly built, according to Zivota. Everything that he could do was to windup on the ground and wait for the next attack. The attacker then came tohim and started to cut him in the head without a word. He carved a crosson his head 852 . While lying on the ground, Zivota saw another person whostood next to the entrance door and who seemed to have stand guard. Thenboth attackers left the apartment. Zivota had two stabs in the stomach. Hishead was covered with blood. He managed to get up and call a cab. Thecabdriver was shocked with what he saw. Zivota described the quantity ofblood that he lost: “I didn’t even realize there is so much blood in one’shead” 853 .The cabdriver took him to the emergency in Jagodina, where he got stitched.The doctors called police patrol as it was their duty to do so, the police patroltook a statement from Zivota and told him he could go home. The nextday, again two police officers came to take him and took him to the policestation in Jagodina, where he gave a new statement and signed minutes.Since then, the police did not contact him any more.
