BBQ Queenie Scallop Kebab with Garlicand Rosemary OilYou’ve seen the weather forecast of dazzlingsunshine, so out comes the BBQ only to find anhour later it’s pissing down with rain – this recipeworks either way, over the hot BBQ coals orunder a hot grill inside. So ditch the burger andcremated sausage and try this designer kebab –instead, just make sure you don’t overcook asthe scallops go rubbery.Makes 10 Kebabs10 bamboo kebab skewers20 baby onions peeled and blanched in hot waterfor 5 minutes1 bunch fresh basil20 small chestnut mushrooms20 small vine tomatoes cut in half30 queenie scallops – fresh rather than those frozenones pumped with brine4 tbsp olive oil1 sprig rosemary1 clove garlicJuice of ½ lemonMethod1) First soak the skewers in water for about 10 minutes – thisprevents them from burning on the BBQ.2) Take each item and place alternate pieces on each stick –for the basil just bend each leaf into quarters and spike withthe skewer.3) In a mini liquidiser blend together the rosemary, garlic andlemon and drizzle over each kebab – season heavily thenplace over the hot charcoals.4) Leave for 2 minutes then turn and cook for a further 2minutes. Do not over cook them otherwise the scallops willtoughen and go chewy.5) Serve straight away with some nice mixed leaves and a lightmayonnaise.Nutters Restaurant Edenfield Road, Norden, Rochdale, OL12 7TTT/F 01706 650167 Email: enquiries@nuttersrestaurant.comwww.nuttersrestaurant.co.ukTo keep up to datewithcurrentfoodtrendsandfoodrelated topicsfollow @nuttersofficialonTwitter and Nutters RestaurantOfficialonFacebookVisit our website www.streetwisemag.co.uk for all the info about the Streetwise magazines31

Whitworth enjoys another successfulFamily Fun Day ‘by the sea’Whitworth enjoyed its annual Family Fun Day on Sunday 5 July.Entitled ‘Whitworth by The Sea’ and with a distinctly coastal feel, the Whitworth communitydonned a knotted hanky and enjoyed a variety of rides, entertainments, competitions andrefreshments. Now in its sixth year, the annual Family Fun Day at the Riverside is organisedby the Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee. Theevent also benefitted from very good weather despite theforecasted showers which thankfully only materialised rightat the end of the afternoon.Attractions on the Riverside car park included funfair ridesand games, ice cream and candy floss and five seasidethemedcompetitions with prizes for the bonniest baby, knobbliest knees, glamorous granny, gorgeous granddadand best gurner, judged by the Mayor of Whitworth,Councillor Lynda Barnes. The winner of thebonniest baby competition was treated to a freeportrait photography sitting from local photographerHoward Wilkinson, and the Riverside kindly donatedPhotos: Mike Burgessthe prizes for the other competitions. Whitworth’sfamous Vale and Healey Band left nobody in any doubt as to why they are multi-awardwinning,and there was added fun from a Punch and Judy show and facepainting. EvenScooby Doo turned up to have his photo taken with the competition winners.Councillor David Chorlton, chair of the Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee, says: “Wehad a great day and thanks are offered to everyone who came along and joined in the fun,and to everyone involved in the event’s organisation. WhitworthScarecrowFestivalThe fifth Whitworth Scarecrow Festival took place from Saturday 27 June to Sunday 5 July, and the talentand imagination on display was as impressive as ever. The festival saw 30 separate displays scattered across the length of the town, withentries ranging from characters from popular children’s films to original ideasinspired by topical events or pure imagination. Some displays were produced bymembers of the public and some were made by schools, churches and localbusinesses and voluntary organisations. The weather was reasonably kind withlittle rain landing over the course of the nine days, and there was a great take-up ofthe official trail maps. The festival spirit was dampened, however, by the vandalism of a couple ofscarecrows, with the display made by Healey Care Ltd, situated on the main road inFacit, receiving a lot of damage. This year the public voted on which display they would like to see win.146 votes were cast, and the winner was announced at the town’s FamilyFun Day on Sunday 5 July:Winner: ‘Curiouser and Curiouser’ (Orama Avenue)2nd Place: ‘A Cut Above’ (School Terrace)3rd place (joint winner): ‘Rasta Crow’ (Princess Street)3rd place (joint winner): ‘Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf’ (StBartholomew’s Primary)All votes cast were automatically entered into a prize draw to win avegetable box from Facit Garden Centre; the lucky winner was NickieBaron.Winner: ‘Curiouser and Curiouser’(Orama Avenue)The festival is organised by the Whitworth Tourism and Leisure Committee.Councillor David Chorlton, chair of the Committee says: “The main aims of thefestival are to encourage a sense of pride in our town, and to give the communitysomething a little different; judging from the very positive feedback we feel theFestival continues to achieve these aims. On behalf of the Committee, I’d like to2nd Place: ‘A Cut Above’(School Terrace)thank everyone who took part in the Festival and who took the time to visit the displays. The entrants worked so hard on theirdisplays – some were funny, some more poignant, but all were wonderful and we look forward to doing it all again in 2016. Asalways, we would encourage as many members of the Whitworth community to take part next year, and dates and details of howto enter will be issued in due course.”For more information, please contact Whitworth Town Council on 01706 852018 / info@whitworth.gov.uk.Visit our website www.streetwisemag.co.uk for all the info about the Streetwise magazinesPhotos: Mike Burgess33
