tile laying tipstile laying tipsintroducciónCeramic tiles are not a finished product, the customer can only appreciate the design, qualityand overall, the best performance of ceramic coverings, if they have been well laid, both froma technical point of view and aesthetic.The final satisfaction of the customer depends on the proper placement of the ceramicmaterials.Most of the claims are due to incorrect handling of ceramic products and a bad placement.For all this, it is necessary to make a number of preliminary considerations for the correct workof the ceramic material.To achieve this objective, it is essential that the placement of ceramic tiles is carried out bya professional of proven experience and with technical knowledge of materials that he hasto use.On the other hand, the use of proper placement techniques that allow to improve the qualityand aesthetics of finishes is necessary. The technique of placement recommended by butechand described in this document is the placement in thin layer. This system involves theapplication on the support of a uniform amount of a few millimetres of adhesive, on whichthe ceramic tile will be placed.Placement supportThe set of elements which form the basis on which the final finish is placed can be understoodas support, in general sense. The stability and correct preparation of the support is essential todo a good job by the professional, as well as the durability in time.The main factors that characterize the placement support are:Flatness.Cohesion.Water absorption.Surface texture.Chemical compatibility.Reaction to water.Cleaning.Humidity.Besides taking into account these parameters on the surface of placement, it is necessary toconsider the structural movements of the base support, mainly due to the retraction of theconcrete. To control this factor, it is necessary to respect the waiting times to complete thesetting of all the structural elements.However, for other factors, a good diagnostic of this and a right choice of material to preparesupport will facilitate the work of the labourer, finally getting a ceramic coating of goodquality.FlatnessPlacement in thin layer needs a good planimetry of the surface. For this, it must be taken intoaccount deviations from flatness less than 2 mm measured with a 2 m rule.Cement adhesives usually employed have to be applied generally in thin layer. We must avoidcorrecting defects in flatness of the support with the same adhesive.To correct this problem, it is needed regularization with cement mortar layers both inpavements and coatings. Autoleveling mortars can also be used in the case of pavements.With these mortars we get ideal placement surfaces for laying ceramic tiles. In this way weachieve optimizing the work of the labourer while the adhesive consumption is reduced.CohesionThe adhesive to be used must have a good grip both to the support and the tile to place.However, it is important to have a support that is consistent, because the entire weight of thecoating will be placed to this through the adhesive.Check, scraping with a nail or other similar item the degree of consistency of the support tocover. In case of having supports that collapse easily, or can be bent, with cracks, peeling orsimilar alterations, it will be needed to chip again until reaching a resistant area and replacewith a layer of adequate regularization. For supports with a weak surface consistency applyprimers that confer a good resistance for the tile placement.Water absorptionCement adhesives require a certain amount of water for its setting and hardening. Ifthe support on which the are applied have a high absorption, they will not have theamount of water needed to complete a good setting leading to weak adhesives andwithout consistency. To solve this problem we recommend the use of primers to fillwhich reduce the absorption of the support.It must also indicate that a little absorbent support implies low porosity and,therefore, it is difficult the mechanical anchoring of cement adhesives. It is thennecessary to chip again the support, apply primers-bridges of adhesion or cementadhesive of high characteristics to provide chemical adhesion, thus supplying thelack of mechanical adhesion.Surface textureThe texture of the support is also important to get a good adhesion of the adhesive.In case of application of cement adhesives, the supports with rough texture allowgrip material to enhance mechanical adhesion of the cement.The increase in this roughness is achieved with techniques such as chipping, sandblasting film for high pressure or special primers.Chemical compatibilityAdhesive and support must be compatible chemically to achieve a good adhesion. Forexample, on supports of plaster cement adhesives cannot be directly placed because thecomposition of these is incompatible with plaster.To solve this problem it is necessary to apply primer to prevent direct contact betweenadhesive and plaster. Adhesives that do not contain in its composition cement can also beapplied on this type of supports, such as adhesives in dissolution.Reaction to waterIt is important to know that in case of being subjected to the action of water (liquid orsteam), the support must remain stable and do not make convex, produce landslides or otherproblems that can damage the final coating.As a solution, there are a lot of different materials that waterproof the support avoiding thecontact with water.CleaningBefore using any adhesive it is essential to have a clean support without any type of elementthat can undermine the effectiveness of the bonding material that is used. All the remains ofdirt, or dust will be cleaned before beginning the tile or welding process.HumidityThe humidity of the support is also a parameter to take into account due to different aspects.The presence of high humidity in the support may reduce the ability of the bonding materialto enter into the network of pores, thus reducing the adhesion. On the other hand, there arematerials, such as wood, that are susceptible of being dimensionally altered if there is not anadequate level of humidity in the support.Adhesive choiceThe existence of good quality materials on the market and the availability of a wide rangeof laying techniques does not ensure, by itself, perfection and optimum performance ofceramic coverings and pavements. It is necessary, in addition, that both factors are combinedentirely by technicians and operators that are responsible for the projects and the executionof works.On the one hand, the existence of the new fields of employment and higher technicalrequirements require an improvement in the manufacture of the ceramic materials and, onthe other hand, greater diversification of high-performance adhesives, allowing to choosethe most appropriate for each use.Both developments will not be enough if, at the same time, placement criteria are notdeveloped based on firm technological foundation. As a whole , these new developmentshave made that bonding materials manufacturers improved technological solutions throughthe development of specific adhesive products to each type of laying.To define and classify adhesives, their benefits of adherence to the various types of ceramicis taken as a criterion. Adherence, considered as the joint between the ceramic tile and thesupport, plays a very important role in the tiling and welding durability .A good adhesion should ensure, on the one hand, a firm bond of the tile to the support, andon the other hand, a long duration of that firmness.Durability is the maintenance of an appropriate quality over time. For this reason, if adhesionbetween the ceramic piece and support is an essential factor in the quality of the coating,the permanence of that adhesion is its durability.The choice of the adhesive is essential for a good laying. For this, butech only recommendsthe use of adhesives that meet current European Standards EN12004Classification of bonding materials for ceramic tiles according to EN12004.preparation of the adhesiveThe preparation of adhesive depends on the chosen type for the placement of the ceramiccoating, so it is always recommended to follow all instructions specified by the manufacturer.In the case of cement adhesives, contents of the bag must be mixed with the indicatedamount of water and with the help of an electric mixer at low speed (500 r.p.m), until you geta smooth, homogeneous mass and without lumps.Let stand the mortar for a few minutes, mix briefly and the material will be ready to use.Cement adhesives:Mix of hydraulic conglomerates, mineralsloads and organic additives that only have tobe mixed with water or any liquid addition justbefore using it.Dispersion adhesives:Mix of organic conglomerates with polymershape in aqueous dispersion, organic additivesand mineral loads that are presented readyto use.Reactive resin adhesives:Mixture of synthetic resins, organic additivesand mineral loads that harden as a result of achemical reaction. They are presented as oneor more components.Types of adhesivesnormalCharacteristicsimprovedC 1 C 2D 1 D 2R 1 R 2Placement of ceramic tilesThe placement process begins with the application of the adhesive on the placement support,for which a notched trowel should be used.Simple layer adhesive technique involves the application of the adhesive on the placementsurface and its subsequent extension with the trowel to get a uniform thickness of theadhesive. Do not apply adhesive thickness exceeding the manufacturer’s instructions.Double layer technique involves the application of the adhesive on the back of the ceramic tileand on the surface. Therefore, the adhesive is laid on the support with the notched trowel andthen it is also applied a uniform thickness of 1-2 mm on the tile.In that way, all the back of the tile is covered, a very important aspect for tiles bigger than1000 cm2, placements in exteriors or high traffic areas. Do not apply adhesive thicknessexceeding the manufacturer’s instructions, taking a maximum of 10 mm thick.Once the adhesive is applied, the ceramic tile is placed on the material pressing to get thenecessary contact between adhesive and ceramic tile. We must periodically check theadhesive efficiency and verify that the contact surface is superior to 75%.Sealing of jointsThe sealing joints have both technical and aesthetic functions. Thus, joints absorb thedeformations of the support at the level of the ceramic coating, avoiding with their presencethat the various stresses of the multilayer system could be transmitted to ceramic tiles.Also, these joints increase the contact surface between adhesive and adherent, and contributeto the decorative effect of textures and modularity of the coated surface. The minimum widthof these boards will be 1.5 mm indoor.While in exteriors the advised width has to be 5 mm minimum, although the weatherdemands or destinations of use can change these recommendations. This type of joints mustbe filled with suitable materials which can ensure absorption of deformations, waterproof,permeability to water vapour, resistance to mold growth, possible requirements of resistanceto chemical attack and the surrounding aesthetic.The choice of sealing material is very important for the finishing of a ceramic coating. butechrecommends the use of materials that meet current European Standards on sealing materials.Preparation and use of the grouting materialOnce the time of adjustment is completed, joints must be cleaned in their entire length, widthand depth, and wait for until the grouting material is completely dry. The preparation of thematerial depends on the type that it has been chosen, so it is always recommended to followthe manufacturer instructions.In the case of cement mortars, contents of the bag must be mixed with the indicated amountof water and with the help of an electric mixer at low speed (500 r.p.m), until you get aconsistent, homogeneous mass and without lumps. Tools and containers to use must be clean.Later on, apply with a hard rubber trowel, pressing the mortar on the placement joint, to fillit all. When the mortar begins to harden, it should be cleaned with a fine slightly dampenedsponge. After this, clean again joints with a dry sponge, to avoid the change of colour throughthe joint due to the damp.Finally, on the place where joints meet, it is essential to respect existing structural or plannedjoints in paving and frameworks. Perform perimeter joints, that will be present in corners,changes of pavement level and at on the area of material changes.Also in large interior areas, it is advised to make intermediate movement joints each 40-50m2, quantity that is reduced by half in large external areas.
