Its only loss came to Ohio State by a 10-3score, and it tied Syracuse, 3-3, en route to winning OhioConference and Big Six championships.1

2007 Bishop Outlook2The Ohio Wesleyan University men’ssoccer team rode a suffocating defenseto the NCAA Division III semifinals lastyear before finishing with a 15-1-6 record.Along the way, the Bishops posted theirsecond consecutive unbeaten regularseason and won their eighth North CoastAthletic Conference championship in thelast 9 years.Head coach Jay Martin welcomes5 returning starters and 12 returninglettermen who will try to win their fourthstraight conference championship andmake another run deep into the NCAADivision III playoffs.“We’re very talented, but very young,”Martin said. “We could start 4 freshmento open the season — but they’re verygood players.”Defense was the Bishops’ strengthin 2006, with the team setting school andNCAC records by allowing only 7 goalsduring the entire season. Three startersreturn from that stellar unit.Back in goal is senior Jamison Dague.Dague led the NCAC in saves percentagelast year on the way to second-team allconferencelaurels. He also was an ESPNThe Magazine Academic All-America ®selection.“Jamison is one of the bestgoalkeepers in Division III,” Martin said.“We’re counting on him for leadership ondefense. Our season will go only as wellas Jamison and the defense go.”Senior Xander Jones, anotherreturning letterwinner in goal, could startfor many teams, while junior Ben Boyntonand sophomore Richard Ott will battle forplaying time.Jamison Dague makes a save.In the backfield, senior Ben Brewerand junior T.J. Trigg are returning All-NCAC selections. Brewer was a secondteampick in 2006 after receiving firstteamhonors in 2005, and Trigg wonhonorable mention status in 2006.Sophomores Matt Giannetti andKevin McGowan, both of whom sawsignificant action last year, could winstarting positions this season. SeniorPatrick Moore is another returningletterman, and sophomore Jon Hood alsoreturns.Newcomers who could contributeinclude freshmen Brian Greene, EricLaipple and Taylor Prescott. Greene andLaipple were an all-state selections inhigh school. The midfield is traditionally an OhioWesleyan strength, and 2007 will be nodifferent.Leading the returnees in the midfieldis senior Nick Skoczen, who was anhonorable mention All-NCAC choice lastyear. Skoczen will see action in insideand outside midfield spots this season.Sophomore Jordan Halloran, theteam’s top returning scorer with 5 goalsand an assist last year, is back at theattacking midfield position.Freshman Ryan Harmanis, an alldistrictselection in high school, “will playsomeplace,” according to Martin. Alsofighting for time at the various midfieldspots are sophomores Blake Pifer and PhilSerfaty and freshmen Chad Baker andKody Law. Law was an all-state pick inhigh school.Sophomore Will Murawski, whosaw action at several different positionslast season, takes over at the defensivemidfield spot this year, and sophomoreJake Meiser also returns.“We’re very deep with different typesof midfielders,” Martin said, “but it’s amatter of who’s willing to play together.”Scoring from the front line was thequestion mark for Ohio Wesleyan lastyear, with the Bishops scoring 38 goalsas a team. “We’re going to rectify that,”Martin said. “We’re going to play moreattacking formations, and I think ourattackers are better than last year, withbetter athleticism and better speed.”Junior Todd Ufferman andsophomore Eric Francis are returninglettermen up front and will joinsophomore Sam Striler and freshmenTyler Bryant and Tyler Wall. Bryant andWall were all-state picks in high school, while Striler, a transfer from Trinity, was a2-time all-state selection as a prep. The Bishops’ wild card is freshmanMarcus Bastianelli, who should see actionin the midfield or up front.Ohio Wesleyan faces another ruggedschedule. The season opens with theFred Myers Invitational, which featuresGuilford, Hope and Kean; and the adidas ®Invitational, with games against Almaand Medaille. Important regional testswith Wilmington, DePauw, Otterbeinand John Carroll follow immediatelythereafter. In the NCAC, 2006 tournamentwinner Denison, 2006 tournamentrunner-up Allegheny, up-and-comingOberlin and traditional rivals Woosterand Wittenberg will be at the forefront ofanother thrilling title chase.2007 OWU Men’s Soccer

These core values are easily stripped into threebasic principles: an almost-unanimous endorsement ofthe pursuit of excellence in all things, including athletics;universal identification of athletics as an integral part ofthe educational mission of the institution and citation ofthe intrinsic value to each of the participants, includingpersonal and social maturation, the education of the wholeperson, the development of a healthy lifestyle and learningthe value of the pursuit of goals in a collective context; andidentification of athletics as one of the best ways to developand foster a sense of community. The universal benefitsof athletics are conferred alike on the quarterback at OhioState playing in front of 100,000 spectators and the OhioWesleyan field hockey player playing in front of a smallweekday crowd.OTHER SQUAD MEMBERS9

The campaignis focused on both athletics and recreation, and itis estimated that at least 80 percent of the student bodyuses these facilities on a regular basis. The upgradesto the Selby field and track, especially the artificial turfinstallation, will extend the use of this facility seasonally, and it will allow teams to share the fields even duringthe individual team seasons. Incoming student-athleteshave reported their excitement over the prospect of playingin renovated and new facilities. For example, our verystrong softball program will soon benefit from its ownnew field, now being constructed south of the baseballdiamond. His cultivating was done so subtly,it was usually several years before that seed would blossom. Then the realization would come: It was Fred Myers whoadded the spark, the vitality, that means so much in all ourlives.”The tournament’s Most Valuable Player receives the DickGauthier Award, honoring one of Ohio Wesleyan’s greatestfans. The campaign was announced at OhioWesleyan’s Commencement in 2004, the 100th anniversaryof Rickey’s graduation from Ohio Wesleyan. At that event,Rickey’s grandson, Branch Rickey III ’67, and Jackie Robinson’sdaughter, Sharon, together addressed the graduatingseniors. As of July, 2007, campaign fundraising had approached$7 million and portions of the vision have become reality.Work has commenced on Margaret Sagan Field, thecompletion of which will bring Battling Bishop softball backon campus for the first time since it was reinstated as avarsity sport in 2000. Both Sagan Field and the press box atadjacent Littick Field are scheduled to be completed duringthe fall of 2007.At Selby Field, an OmniGrass artificial playing surfacehas been installed and the George Gauthier Track has beenrebuilt with an Ameritan FP surface.Among the new facilities to be constructed is an aquaticsfacility featuring a 25-yard, 8-lane pool with a diving area.An indoor turf facility also will be built, housing a field ofapproximately 45 yards by 70 yards, or about three-quartersthe size of a regulation football field.Enhancements to all existing facilities are a significantportion of the campaign as well. Home of the BishopsThe Battling Bishop men’s and women’s soccer teams playtheir home games at Roy Rike Field, located on Park Avenueacross from the Ohio Wesleyan residential campus.Widely regarded as among the Midwest’s finest facilities forthe sport, Roy Rike hosted NCAA Division III soccer championshipsfor men in 1990 and 1998 and for women in 2001. It hasbeen the site of an overwhelming home-field record by the Bishopmen’s team, including a 40-game winning streak. That homefieldadvantage helped the Bishops post the best record in theNCAA during the 1980s.A fully-enclosed press box and new bleacher seating anda new building housing locker rooms and offices completed a3-part reconstruction of Roy Rike Field. A state-of-the-art irriga-tion system and new lights and standards were installed as theproject’s first 2 phases.Built in 1934 as a project of the Works Progress Administration,Community Field hosted football games and track meets forWillis High School and included an adjacent baseball field andtennis courts. When Hayes High School was finished in 1962,it provided for those sports with playing facilities on the schoolgrounds and Ohio Wesleyan purchased the complex. E. Roy Rike’42 donated $25,000 to remove the track and upgrade the fields forintercollegiate soccer and lacrosse and intramurals.Prior to 1964, Ohio Wesleyan home games were played atSouth Field, which was located on Henry Street south of SelbyField.Roy Rike FieldSelby FieldAthletic FacilitiesThe crown jewel of Ohio Wesleyan’s athletic facilities is SelbyField, which is the home of the Bishop football, field hockey, track& field and men’s lacrosse contingents. An OmniGrass artificial playing surface was installed for the2006-07 academic year, making Selby one of the most impressivevenues among NCAA Division III institutions. Constructedin 1929, Selby received a new, fully-enclosed 2-level press boxand new bleacher seats in the first part of a 3-phase restorationprogram and refurbished locker rooms in the program’s secondphase. The facility, which seats 9100 and is the fourth-largestcollege-owned field in NCAA Division III, was the site of the 1988Division III men’s lacrosse championship game.Selby also houses the George Gauthier Track, an AmeritanFP surface installed for the 2006-07 academic year. The site of 16of the first 23 NCAC outdoor track & field championships, Selbyis believed to be the oldest facility in the nation constructed toOlympic specifications and remaining in its original configuration.Across campus, Roy Rike Field hosts soccer, primarily underthe lights. Widely regarded as one of the Midwest’s finest facilitiesfor the sport, Roy Rike Field was the site of the NCAA Division IIIsemifinals and championship game for men in 1990 and 1998 andfor women in 2001. Roy Rike also serves as the home field for thewomen’s lacrosse team. The centerpiece of Ohio Wesleyan’s athletic facilities is theBranch Rickey Physical Education Center, prized for both its sizeand versatility. Its Richard Gordon Field House, with a 5-lane,200-meter track, annually hosted the Ohio Athletic ConferenceChampionships and the women’s state title meet as well as thefirst 9 North Coast Athletic Conference championships. Indoorpractice for fall and spring sports can be handled there as well:floor space is larger than a football field, accommodating 6courts for basketball, volleyball and tennis.Branch Rickey Arena, seating 2300, hosts varsity basketballand volleyball contests. Also in the Center are 5 handball/racquetball courts, a squash court, offices, locker rooms andlounges.Offices and locker rooms also are part of Edwards Gymnasium, which is connected by tunnel to the Rickey Center and inturn adjoins Pfeiffer Natatorium, home of the Bishop swimmingteams. Remodeling in Edwards has recently included anexpanded strength facility.Softball will be played at Margaret Sagan Field, scheduledto open for the 2008 season. Baseball is played at Littick Field, site of the 2003 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional; and tennisat the Tennis Centre, a complex of 12 outdoor courts where the1978 NCAA Division III championships were held. The cross country teams run at nearby Methodist TheologicalSchool and Delaware Golf Club, which hosted the NCAADivision III men’s and women’s championships in 1984 and 2005and annually plays host to the All-Ohio Intercollegiate championshipmeet. The golf team also hosted the 2003 NCAA DivisionIII championships at the Delaware Golf Club.
