Its only loss came to Ohio State by a 10-3score, and it tied Syracuse, 3-3, en route to winning OhioConference and Big Six championships.1

2010 Bishop Outlook2The Ohio Wesleyan University volleyball team weatheredsome growing pains last season, but head coachCynthia Holliday is counting on her team to benefit fromthat experience and make a run for a spot in the NorthCoast Athletic Conference championship tournament.“I hope we will surprise people this year,” Hollidaysaid. “With the leadership of our 4 seniors and the playingexperience of the sophomores, I really think we will improveupon the position we finished in last year and thatwe can contend for a spot in the NCAC tournament.”Senior setter Sarah Marshall again will be the hub ofthe Bishop offense. Marshall ranked fifth in the NCAC inassists last season with an average of 7.12 per set.Sophomore Brittany Vickers will be the secondarysetter, and freshman Gen Watts, a 2-time, first-team allconferenceselection in high school, will contribute.Senior outside hitter Alexa Bean will once again powerthe Ohio Wesleyan attack. With Ohio Wesleyan’s improved depth this season, however, Bean is free to return to the front line.Sophomore Megan Weissenberger ranked fifth in theconference in kills last year with an average of 3.01 perset on the way to honorable mention All-NCAC status andNCAC Newcomer of the Year honors.Sophomore Heather Kuch, a transfer from Heidelbergwho was a 2-time honorable mention all-conference pickin high school; freshman Katie Fain, a special mentionall-conference selection in high school; and freshmanCassie Fowler give the Bishops a deep and talented pool ofoutside hitters.Sophomore Ashley Haynes, who led the Bishops with59 blocks last year; and freshman Tamra Londot, an alldistrictselection in high school, give the Bishops excellentdepth at the middle hitter spot.At the weakside hitter position, senior Lainey Kekicand sophomore Hannah Benzing return. We want to finish inthe top four in the conference, and compete hard againstthe nationally ranked teams on our schedule.”Ohio Wesleyan opens the season at Wilmington onSept. 1. Home of the BishopsThe Battling Bishop volleyball team plays its homematches in Branch Rickey Arena, nestled in the middle of theOhio Wesleyan campus.Named after Branch Rickey '04, who integrated majorleague baseball while president and general manager of theBrooklyn Dodgers, the arena opened its doors in time for the1976 volleyball season. It seats 2300 and has been the site for2 North Coast Athletic Conference tournaments. Rickey Arenaalso serves as home of the Bishop men's and women's basketballteams and has hosted NCAA Division III playoff games forboth genders as well as several NCAC and Ohio Athletic Conferencetournaments. The arena is part of the Rickey Center, which also includes the adjacent Gordon Field House.Prior to the opening of Rickey Arena, Ohio Wesleyan homematches were played in adjoining Edwards Gym. Opened duringthe 1905-06 academic year, the still-unfinished facility hostedOhio Wesleyan's first intercollegiate basketball team. As manyas 3000 fans crammed their way into the double-decked courton the building's second floor, which still hosts varsity practicesand intramurals. The gym was named after John Edwards, who served on the Board of Trustees in the late 1890s and early1900s. One of the biggest facilities in the state at the time of itsconstruction, Edwards was one of the first sites for the Ohio highschool basketball tournament championships, which it hostedinto the 1930s.Branch Rickey ArenaSelby FieldAthletic FacilitiesThe crown jewel of Ohio Wesleyan’s athletic facilities isSelby Field, which is the home of the football, field hockey, track& field, and men’s and women’s lacrosse contingents. An OmniGrass artificial playing surface was installed forthe 2006-07 academic year and lights were installed for the2010-11 academic year, making Selby one of the most impressivevenues among NCAA Division III institutions. Constructedin 1929, Selby received a new, fully-enclosed 2-level press boxand new bleacher seats in the first part of a 3-phase restorationprogram and refurbished locker rooms in the program’s secondphase. The facility, which seats 9100 and is the fourth-largestcollege-owned field in NCAA Division III, was the site of the1988 Division III men’s lacrosse championship game.Selby also houses the George Gauthier Track, an AmeritanFP surface installed for the 2006-07 academic year. The site of19 of the first 26 North Coast Athletic Conference outdoor track& field championships, Selby is believed to be the oldest facilityin the nation constructed to Olympic specifications and remainingin its original configuration. Selby Field and the GauthierTrack will play host to the NCAA Division III outdoor track &field championships in 2011.Across campus, Roy Rike Field hosts soccer, primarilyunder the lights. Widely regarded as one of the Midwest’s finestfacilities for the sport, Roy Rike Field was the site of the NCAADivision III semifinals and championship game for men in 1990and 1998 and for women in 2001.The centerpiece of Ohio Wesleyan’s athletic facilities isthe Branch Rickey Physical Education Center, prized for bothits size and versatility. The Richard Gordon Field House floorwas resurfaced in November 2008, and the track was refinishedwith a state-of-the-art encapsulated surface in December 2008.Gordon Field House hosted the first 9 NCAC indoor track & fieldchampionships. Indoor practice for fall and spring sports canbe handled there as well: floor space is larger than a footballfield, accommodating 4 courts for tennis and 2 for basketballand volleyball.Branch Rickey Arena, seating 2300, hosts varsity basketballand volleyball contests.
