HydroGateFabricatedSlide GatesDescriptionHydro Gate fabricated slide gates are designed and fabricatedfrom special shaped extrusions or structural angles, flats, andplates are assembled by welds and bolts. Through years offabricating experience, Hydro Gate has developed techniquesfor fabricating parts to a close tolerance and straightness. Sincethere are no machined parts or wedging devices in the gateitself, the gate depends upon water pressure and seal design toseat the fabricated slide. Fabricated slide gates are usuallyfurnished with rubber seals to improve water-tightness. Theyare designed for either open channel use or aperture typeapplications. Open channel gates have no frame member orseal at the top of the slide. These gates will overflow. Aperturegates (over an opening) have top frame member and seals toshut off flow at depths greater than the slide height.A more economical fabricated gate is available without rubberseals for flow diversion. It is not as water tight and relies onhead pressure and presence of silt and fine particles to reduceleakage by plugging.Head capacity is dependent on opening size and availability ofstructural members. The most common head rating is 10 ftseating and unseating, with 20 ft seating being a practical limitfor most sizes. Higher heads require special designs. Consultthe Hydro Gate’s Engineering Department for additionalinformation.Fabricated Slide GatesApplications■ Flood Control■ Irrigation Projects■ Low-Head Reservoirs■ Drainage Systems■ Soil Conservation Projects■ Water Treatment Plants■ Sewer Treatment PlantMaterialsHydro Gate fabricated slide gates are available in four differentmaterial combinations.Material Combination 1: Carbon SteelThese steel gates can be grit blast cleaned and painted to yourspecifications.Material Combination 2: Galvanized Carbon SteelAvailable for those installations where a very economical gate isneeded but painting does not provide adequate protection. Both of these material combinations use hot-rolled angles andflats for gate construction.Material Combination 3: Stainless SteelThis material is recommended when corrosive conditions makeit necessary to add protection. These Hydro Gate fabricatedslide gates are made from Type 304, 304L or 316 stainlesssteel. Gates manufactured from these materials are morecorrosion resistant under most conditions than slide gatesmanufactured from other materials.2 F A B R I C A T E D S L I D E G A T E S

HydroGateMaterial Combination 4: AluminumVarious extrusions are utilized with this design. Frame sides aremanufactured from an extrusion that forms the guide slot andprovides flange back mounting. This special extrusion also canbe used for gates fully embedded in concrete channels. Analternate extrusion is used for hand-pull gate frames.CAUTION: Since these fabricated slide gates do not havemachined faces or wedging devices, they cannot be expectedto be as watertight as cast iron slide gates. If low leakagecharacteristics are desired, wedge-type gates (Hydro Gateheavy duty cast iron slide gates or heavy-duty fabricated gates)are recommended.MountingAluminum Fabricated Slide GateUHMW Liner and J Seal AssemblyFigure 3-3Flange Back – Material Combinations 1, 2 and 3(Surface Mounting)F A B R I C A T E D S L I D E G A T E S3

HydroGateAluminum Hand-Pull GatesHydro Gate manufactures several standard sizes of hand-pullor stop gates. An extruded metal section embeds in the sidewalls or is mounted on the face of the rectangular flume orconduit and acts as a guide for the gate slide. The gate consistsof an aluminum plate reinforced if necessary with handholesfor manual opening of the gate. A hand-pull gate is aneconomical way to divert water in rectangular channels.Material Specification – The side guides, slide plate and anynecessary reinforcing for Hydro Gate hand-pull gates aremanufactured from aluminum meeting the requirements ofATMS Specification B209 Alloy or B308 Alloy 6061.Figure 3-7Embedded and Surface Mounted Frames10 F A B R I C A T E D S L I D E G A T E S

HydroGateWeir GatesMany treatment plants require downward-opening fabricatedgates to permit a rough measurement of flow or to maintain aconstant upstream water elevation. For these installations thegate slide is moved down to allow the flow of water over thetop of the slide or weir plate. Sufficient room must be left onthe gate side of the wall to permit the slide to travel downwardfor its maximum specified opening. Every effort should bemade to mount the gate so it will be subjected to seating head. When a watertight shutoff is required, rubber seals should bespecified. If the gate must be mounted in an unseating position, seals arerequired along the sides and across the bottom of the gate.Weir gates mounted with unseating pressure, particularly widegates, are subject to greater leakage because water pressuretends to deflect the slide away from the seals. Most weir gates are required to be considerably wider thanthey are high. Gates up to 20 ft in width are not uncommon.Such a gate may be only 24 to 30 in. high. Tandem lifts andstems must be utilized to ensure alignment of the slide as it israised or lowered. As a general rule, when the width is greaterthan twice the height and the width is greater than 60 in., atandem stem arrangement should be used. Either manual orelectrically actuated lifting devices may be utilized. Weir gatesmay be self-contained or not self-contained.Weir gates are available in Material Combinations 1, 2, 3 and4. If additional information on gate size, lift selection, etc., isneeded, contact your local Hydro Gate sales representative.Dimensional DataFigure 3-8Weir Gate – Material Combinations 1, 2 and 3Figure 3-9Weir Gate – Material Combinations 4F A B R I C A T E D S L I D E G A T E S11

HydroGateHeavy DutyFabricated Slide GateDescriptionThe Heavy Duty Fabricated Stainless Steel Slide Gate is anexceptional design for low leakage requirements in corrosiveenvironments. The frame, slide, stem and fasteners are allstainless steel type 304 and 316 dependent on your application. The side guide seal assembly utilizes an ultra high molecularweight polymer molded and milled to positively retain the slideand form a watertight seal. The polymer provides a selflubricatingsurface with a very low co-efficient of friction, ensuring smooth operation. The guide seal assembly isdesigned for positive retention allowing the compression forceapplied to the slide to be completely adjustable. All HydroGate seals are factory adjusted and after years of service thedesign provides the ability to readjust the compression forceapplied to the slide ensuring years of reliable service.A top wedge system is utilized on gates 24 inches and wider. The Hydro Gate wedge system incorporates a similar designused on cast iron slide gates. Each wedge is securely fastenedto the top of the slide, which when in the closed positionprovides a contact with the top seal of the frame. Both flushbottom and standard bottom closures are available with thismodel. The flush bottom design features a neoprene sealattached to the frames eliminating the need for a recessedfloor. The standard bottom incorporates the same design as thetop wedge system.Fabricated Slide GatesApplications■ Water Treatment Plants■ Wastewater Treatment Plants■ Low-head Reservoirs■ Power PlantsTop wedge systemF A B R I C A T E D S L I D E G A T E S15
