Home of the BishopsThe Battling Bishop men's and women's basketball teamsplay their home games in Branch Rickey Arena, nestled in themiddle of the Ohio Wesleyan campus.Named after Branch Rickey '04, who integrated majorleague baseball while president and general manager of theBrooklyn Dodgers, the arena opened its doors in time for the1976-77 basketball season. It seats 2300 for basketball andhas been the site for NCAA Division III playoff games for bothgenders as well as several North Coast Athletic Conferenceand Ohio Athletic Conference tournaments. Rickey Arenaalso serves as home of the Bishop volleyball team. The arenais part of the Rickey Center, which also includes the adjacentGordon Field House. For 70 years prior to Rickey Arena, Ohio Wesleyan homegames were played in adjoining Edwards Gym. Opened duringthe 1905-06 academic year, the still-unfinished facility hostedOhio Wesleyan's first intercollegiate basketball team. As manyas 3000 fans crammed their way into the double-decked courton the building's second floor, which still hosts varsity practicesand intramurals. The gym was named after John Edwards, who served on the Board of Trustees in the late 1890s and early1900s. One of the biggest facilities in the state at the time of itsconstruction, Edwards was one of the first sites for the Ohio highschool basketball tournament championships, which it hostedinto the 1930s.Branch Rickey ArenaSelby FieldAthletic FacilitiesThe crown jewel of Ohio Wesleyan’s athletic facilities is SelbyField, which is the home of the Bishop football, field hockey, track & field and men’s and women’s lacrosse contingents. An OmniGrass artificial playing surface was installedfor the 2006-07 academic year, making Selby one of the mostimpressive venues among NCAA Division III institutions. Constructedin 1929, Selby received a new, fully-enclosed 2-levelpress box and new bleacher seats in the first part of a 3-phaserestoration program and refurbished locker rooms in the program’ssecond phase. The facility, which seats 9100 and is thefourth-largest college-owned field in NCAA Division III, was thesite of the 1988 Division III men’s lacrosse championship game.Selby also houses the George Gauthier Track, an AmeritanFP surface installed for the 2006-07 academic year. The site of 18of the first 25 North Coast Athletic Conference outdoor track &field championships, Selby is believed to be the oldest facility inthe nation constructed to Olympic specifications and remainingin its original configuration.Across campus, Roy Rike Field hosts soccer, primarily underthe lights. Widely regarded as one of the Midwest’s finest facilitiesfor the sport, Roy Rike Field was the site of the NCAA DivisionIII semifinals and championship game for men in 1990 and1998 and for women in 2001.The centerpiece of Ohio Wesleyan’s athletic facilities isthe Branch Rickey Physical Education Center, prized for bothits size and versatility. The Richard Gordon Field House floorwas resurfaced in November 2008, and the track was refinishedwith a state-of-the-art encapsulated surface in December 2008.Gordon Field House hosted the first 9 NCAC indoor track & fieldchampionships. Indoor practice for fall and spring sports canbe handled there as well: floor space is larger than a footballfield, accommodating 4 courts for tennis and 2 for basketballand volleyball.Branch Rickey Arena, seating 2300, hosts varsity basketballand volleyball contests. Also in the Center are 5 handball/racquetball courts, a squash court, offices, locker rooms andlounges.Offices and locker rooms also are part of Edwards Gymnasium, which is connected by tunnel to the Rickey Center.Remodeling in Edwards has recently included an expandedstrength facility.Edwards adjoins Pfeiffer Natatorium, home of the Bishopswimming teams. In May 2009, ground was broken for theMeek Aquatics & Recreation Center, a 10-lane, geothermallyheated facility scheduled to open in fall 2010.Softball is played at Margaret Sagan Field, which openedduring the 2008 season. Baseball is played at Littick Field, siteof the 2003 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional; and tennis atthe Tennis Centre, a complex of 12 outdoor courts where the1978 NCAA Division III championships were held. The cross country teams run at nearby Methodist TheologicalSchool and Delaware Golf Club, which hosted the NCAADivision III men’s and women’s championships in 1984 and2005 and annually plays host to the All-Ohio Intercollegiatechampionship meet. The golf team also hosted the 2003 NCAADivision III championships at the Delaware Golf Club.
