<strong>2011</strong>-<strong>12</strong> OWU Men’s BasketballFRANK SHANNON INVITATIONALHe took the <strong>Ohio</strong><strong>Wesleyan</strong> basketballreins in 1958 andpromptly ended a 5-yearspan of losing seasons.Within 4 years he hadbeen elected <strong>Ohio</strong> CollegeCoach of the Year,and before he retired in1979 after 21 seasons,he had won more gamesthan any other coach inBattling Bishop history.He is Frank Shannon:teacher, winner, gentleman,friend.The Parkersburg, W.Va., native spent 39 years coachingbasketball at virtually every level, posting more than 800career victories. He also stood out as a player, twice earningall-conference honors at Wittenberg <strong>University</strong>, from whichhe received his B.S. degree in 1940. He went on to earn hisM.A. degree from the <strong>University</strong> of Alabama in 1952.Shannon coached at 5 <strong>Ohio</strong> high schools en route to<strong>Ohio</strong> <strong>Wesleyan</strong>, compiling a 194-67 record and turning out7 district championship teams. Discharged as a major, heserved in Gen. Douglas McArthur’s headquarters in theSouthwest Pacific.He also was among the pioneers of professional basketball,serving as the Youngstown Bears’ player-coach in 1947,the first year of the National Basketball League, forerunnerof the National Basketball Association.At <strong>Ohio</strong> <strong>Wesleyan</strong>, Shannon collected 214 victories,ranking sixth in all-time wins among <strong>Ohio</strong> Athletic Conferencecoaches. His 1961-62 team, which prompted his Coachof the Year citation, finished 21-3, still the best mark in the<strong>Ohio</strong> <strong>Wesleyan</strong> record books for winning percentage. In a5-year span from 1960-65, the Bishops fashioned an 86-31record.Among the products of Shannon’s tenure were BarryClemens ’65, who went on to play 11 years in the NBAShannon helped found; and Tates Locke ’59, later to coachthe Buffalo Braves of that league. While at Tecumseh HighSchool, Shannon coached Wayne Embry, who went on toNBA stardom both as a player and an executive.Shannon also coached the <strong>Ohio</strong> <strong>Wesleyan</strong> men’s tennisteam for 6 years, winning 5 consecutive OAC titles, taughtphysical education and assisted with football scouting andlacrosse.
